One day, Maria heard her mother crying. She rushed over to her. "Whats wrong? What happened? Is everything ok?" "No, no nothing is right!" her mother cries. "Mom calm down! Relax.",she walks over to the couch and says,"Sit down and tell me what happened." Her mother wailed,"Oh, everything has gone wrong! My brother has died!" "Mom... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." At that moment Maria's dad came strolling in. "Maria, why haven't you set the table yet?" he questioned. "Dad, I was just helping Mom. I'll set the table now." Maria rushed off into the kitchen. When she came back, her family was at the table. Mark, her brother, and Jessie, her little sister were also there. Dad was unusually silent so Mark asked,"Dad, whats wrong? You are quiet today." Dad put his hand on his head. "My job... my job! My boss just told me that another company bought our company, so I'm fired!" Everyone was silent for a while. Then quietly, ever so quietly, Dad started sobbing. Dad had never cried, so there was silence once more. Then Dad said softly,"We have only a tiny bit of money left in the bank. We have to cut down on food and there might be no entertainment. You all will have to work. That means lemonade stands, bakeries, and much more. We also might have to sell things." At this Maria seemed horrified! "What type of things will we sell?" she asked. "Everything that costs a lot of money, like jewelry for example. But we also will have a toy sale when the time is appropriate." Now Maria's mother was shocked,"Look, my brother has died so I have to go to Pakistan wearing my jewelry to the funeral. I'm going no matter what!" "Sorry, but thats not happening!" Dad said sharply. "Yes, it is!" Mom thundered. Maria was upset at how her parents were fighting. "How could they?" she thought. Jessie started crying. "Oh dear, I'll give her the bottle," Mom said. Mark spoke up,"Dad, I know we have little money but this is important to Mom." Later Dad called Mom's parents and said,"Amy couldn't attend to the funeral. Have it without her." Maria was eavesdropping so she tried to warn Mom. Mom just said,"Stop! I'm trying to sleep." In the morning, when she called, she heard that the funeral was over. She was torn. She died a couple of days later. "Oh no,my life is ruined," Maria thought
