Ghostly Objections
By: Kayleigh Jennings
As the world becomes but a dream and heaven becomes reality. As her life flashes before her eyes and the gates open to the skies. She listens to the tears rolling down her families’ faces like thunder rolling through the sky. Her greatest fears become her life as she realizes she is watching strangers take away the body she once knew as the host of her precious soul.
Chapter one
She shuts her eyes and says to herself that she is not going into the intense light until she and her family see the face that did this to her. When her eyes finally open and the bright light that she once knew was gone… but only for the moment. No one in the room even hears the words that are falling out of her mouth like vomit. Her hand brushes across the face of her only sister, and the young child presses her hand to her face as if she had felt what had slid across her picture perfect façade. As the child’s hand diminished down her face, she knew her baby sister was her only hope to find who did this to her. Alicia followed her mother and father to the morgue to finalize the funeral papers, her eyes skim across the paper and she sees “Alicia Page Nichols born November 3rd, 1990, died November 3rd, 2009.” The misconception she thought she knew was all the more proven. When the feeling started to swell in her throat, she began to feel like crying, but the tears never fell, and the snot that usually fell down her face no longer existed.
Her mind could no longer stay with the thought of her funeral being planned; instead all she could think about was how her baby sister was without her. Without even taking a step, she was standing over her sister who was in a room by herself, with all the toys Kaitlyn could ever dream of, and she wasn’t playing with a single one. Instead she was holding an old ragged doll that had a familiar look to it. The similarities were to Alicia, and all Alicia could see in her eyes was the look of anger poring through that innocent child’s body. That night Alicia sat on the couch while her family tried to go back to their normal lives: mom cooking supper, dad working on the computer, and her baby sister sitting beside Alicia on the couch watching a blank TV. Alicia noticed something strange when she looked at the television. The reflection of the child was staring right into the eyes of Alicia’s mirror image.
Alicia had only gotten through to her sister that one night when she died. Alicia tried so many times that her soul became restless and enraged. Watching the police ransack through the new found evidence, led her no where. Alicia tried for months that turned into years to find the empty soul that had taken her very life from her, and after a while the police had given up on her murder investigation.
While Alicia watched her family grow older, she had noticed that her little sister, Kaitlyn, had never given up on her. Kaitlyn was now a fifteen year old child who would do anything to find who would do such a horrid thing to such an innocent person. The one innocent person that Alicia knew was being corrupted by the autopsy reports that she had found in the desk of her father. Little Kaitlyn had read every word on that autopsy over and over again.
Alicia Page Nichols born on November 3rd, 1990 died on November 3rd, 2009
The cause of death was strangulation, with a broken trachea, collar bone, and bruises left from the rope found at the crime scene. Traces of spermicidal fluids found in the victim’s body. Bruising and redness on the vaginal area. Rape kit found positive. Bruises on the wrists that are caused from being bound with rope. Slight cuts on the lower abdomen. Weapon found on the floor of the crime scene. No prints on the weapon. Unknown DNA found on the victim’s Cheeks. The DNA found on the cheek and the spermicidal found were a match. The DNA was not a match to anyone in the computers.
Kaitlyn cried when she had found that her sister had been raped. She tried anything and everything to find out what had happened to her sister. She tried anything from collecting statements herself to going to a psychic. Kaitlyn had followed every piece of evidence from her murder until about a month ago. Kaitlyn had found a new life, finally turning the pictures of Alicia toward the ground. She had grown older and had changed so much. The little child that Alicia had once known had diminished in the lost years after Alicia’s death. Now that Kaitlyn had found her new life she had a new boyfriend, a new car, and she had a new job. With this new life came a new personality, and with this new personality came a new person to Alicia. Her little sister was not such a baby anymore, her eyes showed Alicia that she had changed and been traumatized for life.
Kaitlyn was now sixteen years old and more corrupted than Alicia had ever seen her, Alicia wondered if Kaitlyn would ever get over the traumatizing event she had gone through. She was seeing someone she had never known, to take her sister’s body. Watching her go through life with this blah look made Alicia wonder what she had really seen that night. After all she was only a room away. Alicia is curious about what Kaitlyn had actually seen. So she tries to remember what she can about the night that her life was taken from her. She remembers that she heard a small scream right before she felt like she was no longer present in her own body. The thought of her baby sister seeing what was happening in that room made Alicia cringe. She never pondered that that scream might have been from Kaitlyn, but still thinking about it for a while she realized that there was a slight possibility that Kaitlyn could have had a night terror. She often had those when she was a child. And even after she turned into the young woman she is today, she still woke up night after night screaming with a pile of sweat that had taken over her pillow. Alicia wondered if those terrors were because of what she could have witnessed that night.
After watching Kaitlyn for awhile, remembering what she could from that night, and reliving that nightmare over and over until she remembered the end. She saw that small girl watch the soul be taken from her porcelain body. After she remembered, she now knew that when her soul was taken that part of Kaitlyn’s spirit had been drawn out following Alicia around like a ball and chain.
Alicia could do nothing but feel guilty for not making sure that her house was safe for the small child who she was responsible for. The guilt had torn her apart for about a week until she noticed that Kaitlyn had uncovered the evidence for just one more try.
Alicia was sitting in the chair beside Kaitlyn’s bed, while Kaitlyn was getting ready for bed. She was scrambling through a drawer and had found what she was looking for. It was all of the papers that Kaitlyn had gathered through the years of searching for Alicia’s killer. While Alicia was watching Kaitlyn go through the forgotten information, Kaitlyn had remembered something that she hadn’t realized before then. The DNA may now be in the system since it was over ten years since the murder. She may have just uncovered the one thing that could put life on the right track for this unsettled family.
Kaitlyn pondered about the evidence for about a long month, then Alicia followed Kaitlyn around and finally Kaitlyn went to the police station. She had her eye on one cop, which was the only cop left that had not retired since Alicia’s death. His name was Officer Neal. At first the police did not want to do what Kaitlyn asked of them, but after a few days of hanging around the station and not giving up Officer Neal came up to her and said that this case had been his first unsolved case, so it had been eating at him for years so he finally agreed to run the DNA again. After they ran it again, Officer Neal came out of the room with a sad face.
Said Officer Neal, “I have some bad news.”
Said Kaitlyn, “Let me guess, there was no match?”
Officer Neal said, “No there is a match.”
Kaitlyn said, “Well then tell me, who is it?”
Officer Neal said, “It is someone close to you guys.”
Kaitlyn replied, “Well then just tell me.”
Officer Neal proclaimed, “I am not allowed to discuss this information with you it has to be the parents of the victim, I am very sorry sweet heart.”
Kaitlyn said, “So if I can get my mother or father to come in they can find out who this cold hearted person is.”
Officer Neal replied, “Yes”
Kaitlyn said, “Okay then, so if I can get them to come in tomorrow? Or can you call and make an appointment, and say that you have some new found evidence about the case?”
Officer Neal said, “Okay I will call them first thing in the morning.”
Kaitlyn said, “No, I need you to contact them tonight.”
Officer Neal said, “I will try.”
Kaitlyn said, “Pease I need to know.”
Officer Neal said, “Yes ma’am.”
That night Kaitlyn sat by the phone for hours. She even sat there while she ate supper. Finally at 9:30 P.M the phone rang.
Kaitlyn said, “Hello?”
Officer Neal said, “Who am I speaking with?”
Kaitlyn replied, “This is Kaitlyn, may I ask who is calling?”
Officer Neal said, “This is Officer Neal, may I speak with one of your parents?”
Kaitlyn said, “Yes, please hold one moment.”
Officer Neal replied, “Okay.”
Kaitlyn shouted, “Mom, phone.”
Grace said, “Hello, this is Grace Nichols. May I ask who is calling?”
Officer Neal said, “This is Officer Neal.”
Grace said, “How may I help you officer?”
Officer Neal replied, “This is one of the officer’s whom which worked on your daughter’s case all of those years ago.”
Grace said, “Okay what is it that you need officer?”
Officer Neal said, “Well I have some new found evidence on that case, and I need you to come in, so I may discuss it with you.”
Grace said, “Okay so when do you want me to come in?”
Officer Neal said, “As soon as possible.”
Grace said, “How does tomorrow morning sound?”
Officer Neal said, “Perfect for me.”
Grace said, “Okay so I will see you around 7:00 in the morning.”
Officer Neal said, “Yes Ma’am, see you in the morning.”
Grace said, “Bye”
Officer Neal replied, “Bye”
After the phone call, Grace went over to Kaitlyn and gave her a funny look. The Kaitlyn just stopped her right there.
Kaitlyn said, “Mom don’t say anything, I already know what you are going to say.”
Grace replied, “What am I going to say?”
Kaitlyn said, “Okay, I just got the papers out a while ago, and I noticed that there were some suspects. Then I thought about it for a few days, and I figured that maybe the murderer would have committed another crime and the DNA would be in the system now.
