A Teenage Crisis

Have you ever woken up one day and decided ‘I won’t do anything today’? I have, lots of times. Today was one of those days. “Alexandra,” my mom cried from the top of the stairs. I jumped from my bed, expecting a slap to the face or a punch in the stomach. “You’re going to your dad’s today,” she snarled. I watched the spit fly from her mouth. I didn’t concentrate on her words. I stood there numbly, waiting for my punishment. She just slammed the door and I knew I was safe. For now anyways.
Today’s a Monday so I have school!!! Just great I have a terrible morning then I have to go to school! Just my luck!!! With my better days I’ll get a detention too! Well you’ve seen my typical morning so how about my afternoon??? I get home from my detention and my dad is waiting for me by the front door. “I got a call from your school today Alex (Alexandra). “We need to talk now!!!”
“Alex, I’m sick of you slacking. You have so much potential and you waste it in detention. I thought I had raised you better than that,” he scolded. I wanted to scream, ‘ You never raised me. You left me for your prostitute of a girlfriend and your freedom!’ But I didn’t. I bit my tongue to keep from yelling and blanked out as he went on and on about my potential. “Alex, I just want you to be happy. I’ve thought a lot about this, and I think it would be best if… why don’t we talk about this over dinner. Courtney’s almost here.” Courtney, his prostitute of a girlfriend. *** We all sat down at the table, quiet as we began to eat. “So, you wanted to talk about something,” Courtney chirped. It didn’t matter how happy she made my dad- she wouldn’t be anything more than a distraction in my life. She was tall, blonde, and perfect. Too freaking perfect, if you ask me. “Oh, yes. Your mom and I talked about this and we’ve decided you should go to a private school.” The food fell out of my mouth and I stared at him stupidly. “Private school?! As in boarding school,” I asked with an attitude. “If you put it that way…”
“Then yes if you want it to sound worse than it actually is.” “I guess if that’s what you want…Ok I can’t try to be cool with this. Are you crazy?!?!?! I’m not going to a private school, I can’t leave my friends!”
“Well according to your diary you don’t have any friends!!” (Courtney laughs) You read my diary how could you dad I thought we were close!?!? “Obviously not if your keeping huge secretes that hurt you…I don’t even know who you are anymore Alex!!!” “You don’t know who I am,” I laughed bitterly. “What about you and Barbie over there! I don’t even think that’s her real body! And you’re saying you don’t know me?! Wanna know who I am? Fine! I am a girl who hates her parents, who has no life, and would rather eat her arm off than spend another night even remotely close to you! So go ahead, send me to boarding school, Daddy dearest!” I ran off before I could get another word out and slammed the door, locking it behind me. I had planned to run away , but I had been scared. The little girl inside of me told me not to go.
I stuffed the last of my bus tokens in my pocket. I picked up my guitar case and slid open the window, not even bothering to look back as I slid onto the roof. My feet hit the pavement and I began to run. I didn’t really know where I was going. New York wasn’t a great place to run around, but did I seem like I cared? I passed Marco, the homeless man on the corner, and slipped him a few bus tokens, trying to seem as casual as I could. I ran into a few important looking business men, who were carrying briefcases and Blackberries. I mumbled an apology and ran even faster. I rammed into a few old people and stepped on a few toes, but I was desperate of an escape. I was steps away from the train station when I ran into my uncle Ted. “Whoa, Lexi. Where are you going,” he said, grabbing onto my elbows. “Um, I was on the way to… I was going to the coffee shop,” I lied. And he could see right through me.
“No seriously, Lexi, don’t lie to me tell me where your going !” Ok fine. I’m going to a new place to explore for a while. “Ok be careful , and hurry home for dinner I’m coming over and I’m making your favorite… Taco-ring.” I have to admit I feel really bad for lying, but I couldn’t let him know where I was going that would give it all away! What as I supposed to say to him…? I’m running away because my dad’s shipping me off to boarding school and I don’t want to go. That would be a retarded give-away!!!
I fell asleep on the park bench, pigeon poop drying on my shoulder. What a lovely day, I thought, waking up to a stiff back and pigeon crap in my hair. I opened up my guitar case and filed through my pockets. Thirty-two bucks and a paperclip. I had been sleeping in the park for two days and hadn’t been found. Being a hobo is hard, I thought lazily, shoving the money back in my pocket. I was surprised I was still hidden. I had been walking through downtown New York when I saw the missing persons sign. I walked up cautiously, aware of every little movement made my way. I tore the poster down and stared at my yearbook photo. I looked normal, in the picture, with pretty blue eyes and a smile to match. No one would even guess I’m abused, that I was shoved into the Dumpster at school. I look like a normal teenage girl, I thought. Maybe life at a boarding school wouldn’t be as bad as I thought.
I decide to go home and tell my mom that I was just kidnapped so I don’t get into trouble. I get back and see my stuff packed on my bed with a note that says “Thought you might be able to get your own ticket once you got home so it would be on the right date to go to school.” “your mother and I already did the paperwork to transfer your school information so you should be ready to go.
I walked into the school, aware of all the stares. Lindsey, Courtney’s daughter, had her arm looped through mine. “Why is everyone staring,” I murmured, trying not to look into anyone’s eyes. “They heard you ran away. And also, your skirt is four inches too short, your heels are too high, and your make-up makes you look like a raccoon’s ass,” she laughed. “Look who’s talking. Have you figured out which customer is your father yet,” I sneered. I heard her offended gasp but I didn’t turn around. I just laughed and walked away. Maybe boarding school wasn’t as horrible as I thought.
Yet, still could be my teenage crisis! As I’m walking down the hallway everyone continues to stare. A chick with long-beautiful hair and brown eyes named Allyvia comes up to me and says, “Oh look at the fresh meat walking around the hallways, what happened to you? “Did a elephant sit on your face, or did your mom pass it down?” What, haven’t you ever seen a girl before?!…I could tell she was one of the populars, with her preppy attitude and flock of girls depending on her to live.
I had excused myself from class for a ‘potty break’. I slipped into the nearest bathroom…. Only to run into Mr. Male-Model himself. He had baby blue eyes and a crooked smile that made my heart beat a thousand times faster and sink to my stomach. “Um, hi,” he laughed awkwardly. “What are you doing in the girls’ bathroom,” I snapped, suddenly feeling very self-conscious. “Do you know how to read? It says boys’ right there,” he laughed. Oh my freaking god! “So I’m guessing you came in here for a reason, right?” “Huh? Oh, yeah,” I muttered, feeling heat rush to my cheeks. “I’m Dustin, by the way,” he smiled. And then he left.
After he left my heart melted into my hands. “Who was that? I asked myself.” I plan to tell my “friend” that I have a crush on him, but I want to know more about him first. I plan to confront him to meet him better but I couldn’t find him…days passed…there go more…no show…
Okay, so more like two class periods but still, who’s counting. I walked into the cafeteria, my stomach grumbling. And then I see him. His blonde hair is flopping into his eyes and his cheeks were full of color…. He was flawless. And, Lindsey was wrapped into him as if he were a blanket. I flinched, caught off guard, and almost spilled my lunch tray. “You know, it might help if you walked,” I heard an unfamiliar voice say. A girl stood behind me. She had multi-colored hair and blue eyes. “Riley,” she beamed, shaking my hand before I could react. “Alexandra,” I smiled meekly. “If you’re another one of the girls whose going to drool over my brother, I think you should get in line. Half the female population at River Heights is in a trance when he walks into the room. The other half is gay so I think you have some competition,” she smiled. A genuine smile. “You’re Dustin’s sister?” “The one and the only. And that skank on his shoulder is the queen bee herself, Lindsey.” “I know… she’s kinda my sister,” I groaned. I may have just killed any chances of making a friend. “You poor child. I thought it was bad being related to Dustin” she giggled.
