The Secret Diary
By: Alyssa
Chapter 1: The Diary
It was another dreary day in Delevan, Wisconsin. Thunder struck the lake like it was a power tower. The wind shook up the trees, as if a tornado was coming. “Ugh”, I groaned. Nothing to do, nothing to talk about, an absolute nothing day. Phones disconnected, TV shut off, no light whatsoever. But as they always say, expect the unexpected. For some reason, I didn’t listen.
The attic was an unexplored place, and had been for over 30 years! No one had wanted to go up there, for fear of spiders, cobwebs, and rats. But that was my only alternative. Nothing else seemed to catch my eye, or be so captivating, than a mysterious dusty place. I was looking for adventure, something to wash all of the dreariness away. I plopped off the couch, heading upstairs. The attic door stood open, and I began to wonder. Nobody ever went up there. A slight whistling sound along with a chilly breeze whooshed out of the attic. What was up there?! Now I was a little freaked out. A chill crept up my spine as I climbed the attic ladder. Suddenly, I heard a gut wrenching scream that echoed off of the walls. It had come from the darkest corner of the room. Another whoosh of chilly air. I thought that something flew past me, but I couldn’t be sure. In the mysterious see-through object’s place, there was a notebook or something. It read “diary” on the front cover. I felt some guilt about opening up someone’s diary. I mean, it’s not like it was mine or anything. But I did anyway. These are the exact words: Monday, the 5th, 1865
Dear diary,
What a week it has been! Three murderers in one week! I hope not to be next. Well, that’s all.
Elizabeth
I had to stop reading. But what would happen next? It was like a hot fudge sundae, sitting on the table, with my name written all over it. I couldn’t resist.
Tuesday, the 6th, 1865
Dear diary,
I fear there is an armed man in the house. But, let my fate be my fate. This is probably my last letter to you.
Elizabeth
Tuesday, the 6th, 1865, a half hour later
Diary,
He’s coming to get me! Help me! He’s coming up the stairs! He’s in my-
I couldn’t read anymore. But, really, what was the harm? I read on through the 1900’s and finally to:
March, the 19th, 2010
Dear diary,
I worry that there are people in the house, and they will probably figure out my secret sooner or later. I have to do something.
Elizabeth
Chapter 2: Granddad
What was she going to do? Was she even alive? She couldn’t have been, because there was a ‘man’ in the house, plus, she didn’t finish her sentence. Well, anyway, I found this picture while reading.
There was no more to read. I would have to be super careful now. Mom and dad called me down for lunch. Granddad was sitting at the table. The best way to find out about Elizabeth would be to ask him. “Granddad, do you know anybody named Elizabeth that might have lived here before us?” I silently waited for an answer. “Don’ remember nothin’ these days. Everythin’s a blur with this ole brain.” What could I do now? I would have to unravel the mystery by myself. What were the odds of that? Probably 1 in 1,000,000. But would that stop me? Of course not. There was no more writing in the diary, so to find some more info, to the library I was destined.
Chapter 3: Bloodshot
It had stopped raining, so I strolled on the rocky pavement, on my way to find some information at the local library. The desk clerk helped me and found some old newspaper clippings that were made during the time of Elizabeth’s murder. I gasped. There was a whole headline and, oh the columns and columns about her! Supposedly, she had been murdered by a man named John Wilkesbooth, and there was a picture of a ghost. Elizabeth! With clippings in hand, I strolled slowly back home. Home. Somehow, I’d never really thought about that. This was actually my home. I’d lived in it for as long as I remembered. And now it was being inhabited by a ghost! Even more, she was murdered by John Wilkesbooth and is planning something. I don’t know what to do now.
Chapter 4: Questions and Planning
I’d set a trap. This was going to be hard, for there aren’t many ways to trap a ghost. My brain was on fire when an idea popped into my head. Her diary. She would do almost anything for it. I could make her answer questions, or else she wouldn’t get her diary back. After all, what could a ghost do to a human?
Chapter 5: Trap
I would have a stakeout. In the attic. She’d have to come out of the shadows sometime. She would ask for her diary (well, more like growl), I’d say no, you have to answer some questions first. That’s how I’d planned it. And that’s how I wanted it to be. But, as they always say, expect the unexpected.
Chapter 6: Fight
I was snuggled away in my sleeping bag, thinking I was ready for anything. It was kind of creepy up there, all alone. The shutters rustled and that made me jump. Finally, I saw a glistening figure slide out of the shadows. I clutched the diary closer. “ Give-me-my-diary.” She barely managed to choke out the words through gritted teeth. “I-I can’t give it to you. Yet. First, you have to answer some questions. Otherwise, go back.” She hesitated for a moment. At first, I thought that she would actually go away. “Fine. What do you want to know,” she almost whispered in a crystalline voice. “I-I want to know-I want to know-why.” “Why what?” “Why-why-why did you get murdered?” That must have stung her, because she almost fell to the ground. “I-I did something,” she cried. “But I can’t tell you,” she quickly added. “Well, you can share your secret with me, and I swear on my life that I won’t tell.” “N-okay, well I-I murdered a young boy. But I didn’t mean to, I was testing out my gun, you know, for strangers. He got in the way, my finger slipped, and-and-you know.” I think you can agree with me, I didn’t believe her. But, I pretended to. “Oh, well, here you go.” I handed over the diary. “Th-thank you.” I guess she was a little shook up now. “I hope we can become friends,” I yelled, but she was already gone. My story was entertaining, horrifying, and maybe just a little bit scary, but think that you should have liked it. Maybe I can write another. Someday….. Hey, hey, what’s going on?! Help-
