Dear Reader,
I have been in contact with Genesis for over two years, hearing her story and writing it. I shall defer not to bore you with the details of our meeting and suffice it to say that I am ultimately fascinated with her world. I have grown to love her, as I hope you shall. Please, do not think I am insane, I am merely the messenger of her story. Written in her words exactly, here is the first in what I hope will be a fantastic series, Bloodletting, Chapter one of the Saga of Genesis Kross, named by herself, KrossRoads.
Wolves attacked the borders around the airship ports the night before it happened. You could hear them howling in pain and anguish as our warriors let fly round after round into the pack.I fell asleep listening to the rain and the raging battle going on not too far from where I lay in my bed.
That morning I awoke before dawn, our two beautiful moons were still in the sky. It continued to rain, though the downpour had slackened from it's former ferocity on the night of the 30th. I could hear my mother rummaging and preparing herself in the next room for the call of the court that morning. I smiled, getting out of my bed and dressing silently, the cold floor beneath my currently bare feet somewhat comforting to me. I pulled on my black pants and the hooded vest which Kylee had given to me for my birthday last year, before shoving my feet into my father's soft hunting boots. I walked to my wardrobe and looked into it proudly, knowing that not many girls had an entire closet full of weapons. I grabbed the sword my father had made for me before he died.
A lump welled up in my throat and I had to blink back tears, as always, when I thought of his face from my child hood. In my emotion I guess my grip must have loosened from the sword and before I realized it, the sword clattered to the floor, making what I thought was the loudest noise possible. It's funny that way isn't it? Whether you're opening your window to sneak back in or dropping something on the floor when you least want to be heard, it has to be as loud as cannon fire.
"Shit!", I whispered, knowing that Delia had heard me then. I grabbed the sword from the floor and ran to the balcony, climbing onto the railing just as my mother burst through the door. "Genesis Alexa Kross, get down from there this instant!", She screamed, looking quite shocked though she knew that this happened every morning. I giggled, and smiled warmly at her, something which rarely happened anymore and must have added exponentially to her shock. "Sorry Delia, I have plans. This might be my last day of freedom and beside that we won't know until sundown. It's my birthday!" I replied before jumping from the ledge. I heard Delia yelling after me and smiled, my black hair streaming behind me as I waited for the right time to flip. Jumping from 100 feet above the ground was nothing to me, but it sure scared her. I flipped, landing as gracefully as a cat and waving up at Delia who was still looking down at me.
I fastened the scabbard and sword around my waist, pulling my music player from my pocket and turning it on. The familiar sounds of the steam pipes were beautiful in my ears as I ran towards the border fences to meet with Kylee and Daniel, my two best friends. I got to the fence apparently before them, and looked around. It wasn't like them to be late so I was automatically on my guard, pulling out my sword and turning it on, watching the blade heat itself to white hot before stepping into my usual defensive stance. "Kylee! Daniel! If you're hiding then now would be a good time to come out before you get sliced."
I yelled out to them, though the uneasy feeling in my stomach only grew when I heard a rustle in the bushes.
