Forget Me Not

By: Chelsea Thompson

Why my brother always makes me go and get the ball when he drops it, is beyond me. I mean making a seven year old girl go into the deep dark woods. God he is lazy.
Honestly, I don't really mind. I love the woods, I always have. But my dad says we're not supposed to be in the woods alone, or at all, but I never listen. I mean why should I, the woods aren't dangerous, or full of death, as my brother tries to say. Their peaceful and full of life. Like the birds and how they sing their songs attract mates, or how the deer roam to try to feed themselves full before winter. No matter how much anyone try to convince me that the woods are bad, I will never believe them.
Back to the ball, I can't find it anywhere. Sill I look because if I gave up John,my brother, would call me a chicken and laugh at me. Well that will never happen, because I am no chicken. So I look until I come to this field with a well in the middle. I walk over to the wall, and stop. I can't even see over the well's walls I'm so short. And I'm not just talking an inch or two, I'm talking a whole foot. A whole foot shorter than the well's walls and a whole foot shorter than anyone in my class. I sigh and pull myself up onto the wall in a siting position. When I look into the well I see my ball. I scrunch my eyebrows. How had it gotten all the way down there? I throw the thought away because I want the ball so much that I would do anything to get it.
I look around trying to find something to pull it out with, when I spot the bucket. Perfect! I can use the bucket to somehow get the ball and pull it up. I think the idea is so good that I pump my fist in the air in triumph. John could never have thought of this.
I lower the bucket until it's bottom touches the top of the water. I move the bucket so it's side just dips below the surface of the water , and slide it over so the ball just slips in. I give a squeal of happiness and start to hoist it up. I get about a foot when the rope gets snagged on something. I try to pull on it but it won't budge, and every time I tried to pull on it the ball would bounce in the bucket. I couldn't get the rope free sitting so I grabbed the rocks and stood, and instead of using one hand to hold on with, I used both to pull with. I set my feet apart and yanked as hard as I could. That is where I made my mistake.
No, actually my real mistake was ever thinking I could get the ball out in the first place.
As I pulled the rope was coming free, but so was the rock beneath my feet. The rope slipped from my fingers as I fell towards the gaping hole of the well. I grabbed for the wall and got a hold, but the rocks couldn't take the force of my falling body, and tore free of the wall. It happened fast after that. I was falling feet first when my right leg caught on the bucket that I had been trying to raise. I cried out in pain. The force of the hit sent me sprawling into the walls without my leg. Pain seared though my leg as I slowly slide from the wall, and my led from the tangle of the bucket. My face hit the water as I was trying to breath through the pain in my leg, which made me choke on water that had filled my lungs. As my whole body enters the water I start to sink, at first I can't figure out why. I find out as my right leg slightly touches the well wall and massive pain shoots through my leg. I cry out under the water and fight my way back to the surface using only my hands and left leg. It takes another second for me to reach the surface where I suck in air to my aching lungs and as I am about to take an other breath
