Running
she was on her feet in an instant, following her mother in the jungle, smelling the soft loam that turned under her feet, the jungle air that rushed past her, the smell of fear and anger that came from her mother.
β€œTigra! Hurry!” her mother called. Upon hearing her new name, she put on a burst of extra speed. Suddenly, she bumped into her mother, her soft, sweet mother who was staring at a cliff-face in horror. A dead end. Her mother turned so sharply that Tigra fell face-first to the ground. Her mother picked her up, setting her down behind her warm body. She was pressed against the cliff-face in terror. β€œTigra.” Her mother said, β€œwhen they come, I want you to climb, and climb high. Once you reach the top, go down the soft path to the boat.” Her face was calm and ageless, accepting. Tigra didn’t know what to do. She was scared.
β€œyou are coming, aren’t you?” she asked timidly.
β€œyes.” Her mother said with impatience, when they appeared on the horizion. β€œmove!” her mother commanded, shoving her up. Not knowing what to do, she climbed. When she reached the top, she looked down at her mother. They were there, shouting at her. β€œkill her! Just kill her and you’ll live!” Uncle pleaded with her. Mother looked up and shouted one word. β€œGO!” just before a hunter sliced her throat. Tigra reeled back in shock. She ran down to the boat, packed with provisions, in tears. She saw a head appear over the ridge. She pushed off and a strong wind sprang, leading her safely away. She lasted a week having eaten a quarter of the provisions, and fainted from exaustion and grief.

When she woke up, she was on a beach. She saw the crack of a hidden cave, lying in wait. But first she would find people. She had to find people. She tried to stand up, and collapsed. Just then, a woman appeared in strange clothes, wearing a cross and singing, which she stopped doing as soon as she saw tigra lying on the sand. β€œa child! Oh my!” she ran over to her, propping her up, when tigra opened her eyes. The woman screamed. She slapped her, over and over again, saying, β€œthe devil leave this child, the devil leave this child!” Tigra was so scared tht she was able to get up, and run to the hidden cave. Cave-On-The-Beach. To the woman, it looked as though she had dissapeared into the rocks. Tigra sat down in the cave and started to cry. All alone. No-one to help. No Mother
