Chapter 1: Taken

My name is Sasha Eddington, I am just a normal teenage girl. Well, almost normal, my story begins on August fifteenth 2000, I and my friend from college were visiting my mother in Switzerland. My mother and father divorced when I was six, I live with my dad and go visit my mom whom I have not went to visit in six years. My friend, Macy Sutton and I came to Switzerland from Arkansas to spend my sixteenth birthday with my mother. Finally I arrived at my mother’s house, “Wow “I said as I stepped out of my 1969 El’camino and shut the door. Mom’s house is huge; it has two stories and its red and white. I went up to the door, took a deep breath, knocked and waited, after a few minutes the door slowly opened.

My mother is a very lean woman with jet black hair, “Sasha . . . is that really you?” “Yeah mom” I said, “It’s really me.” My mother stepped outside and before I knew what was happening my mother had pulled me into her arms. I felt very warm in my mother’s embrace yet also very uncomfortable, I slowly wiggled out of my mother’s arms and looked up at her. “It’s good to see you mom” I said “Its been quite a while.” My mother looked at me, “Yes sweetie, it has been quite a while, about six years if I am not mistaken.” My mother’s voice got a little quieter as she was said those words, “I know mom . . . I’m sorry I waited so long to come see you, I guess the time just got away from me.” As my words came to an end I hung my head, not wanting to see the hurt in my mother’s eyes. After a while I felt my mother’s fingers gently coax my chin up, however I kept my eyes averted so as not to see hers. “Sasha, sweetie, will you please look at me?” I thought about it few minutes and then slowly lifted my head till my eyes met my mothers’. What I saw in my mother’s eyes was not at all what I had expected to see, I expected shame, hurt, and sadness but instead I saw love, care and understanding. “Sasha I am not mad at you sweetie, I know all too well how time can get away from you.” I lunged at my mother and wrapped my arms around her waist hugging her, after a second I felt my mother’s arms wrap around my shoulders. “Shh. . . its ok, the only thing that matters now is that you are here and we are together,” my mother said. I lifted my head from her chest and smiled at her, “I know its ok mom, and I love you.” “I love you to sweetie.” My mother said.

As the day progressed I got settled into my bedroom and got ready to go out with Macy to tour the town. I started hearing something, it sounded like music but the sound was a very low tone and I didn’t know where it was coming from. I ran around in circles trying to figure out where the hell the sound was coming from and finally found it. It was my cell phone which had fallen down the side of my bed. I crawled under my bed and snatched my phone trying to answer it before the call went to voicemail. “Hello?” I said. It was Macy, “Hey girl what’s up?” she said. “Oh, nothing much, I was just putting my shoes on and was almost ready to call you when you called me.” I said with a small chuckle, me and Macy always seemed to know when the other wanted something. Macy started laughing and then said, “Okay, so when do you want to go out and tour the town?” I looked at my watch to see what time it was, it said it was about five o’clock. “Umm. . . how about you come here and pick me up around five thirty? It is about five now.” “Okay, I’ll be there, talk to you soon, bye.” Macy said. “Bye.” I said, and closed my cell. Instead of driving my car I’ll let Macy show me around first so I know where to go later on.

After a while I grabbed my jacket from the chair in my room and went downstairs, “Hey mom, I am going to go out with Macy for a bit and look at the town, is that okay?” Mom was standing at the sink washing her hands and turned around to look at me, “Sure Sasha that will be fine, just don’t stay out to late ok? I want you home no later than eleven.” She said. “Okay mom” I said, “I will be back soon, bye.” Before she could say anything I was out the door and in the drive way with Macy. “Hey” I said, “are you ready?” Macy looked at me and grinned, “ Ohh yeah” she said while laughing, “We are going to have so much fun, come get in so we can head to town.” I ran to her car, threw open the passenger side door and hopped in. As soon as I had my seatbelt on she took of down the road. We road in silence all the way to town, I looked out the window and thought I saw something run through the woods, it looked like a shadow figure of a human but it was moving extremely fast. As I kept looking I decided my eyes had played a trick on me. Macy parked by an antique shop and we go out, “Hey” she said looking at me, “Do you want to shop around in stores or just wonder around town?” I looked around the small town and thought about it for a moment. Then I said, “Well how about I will wonder around and window shop, then we can meet up when we are ready to leave, how does that sound?” She agreed and we said bye and went our own way until time to leave town. The first place I went to was a book store that was small and old looking but the name had caught my eye. The store’s name was, Home of Myths and Legends. Myths and legends is right up my lane, I love anything different and mysterious, possibly true or untrue, it is quite fascinating. I walked into the store and said hello to the clerk then went in search for a book. After a few minutes I found a vampire romance and a werewolf romance. I stayed at the book store almost the entire time we were in town. My watch beeped and I looked down at my wrist, it was ten o’clock, I grabbed my books and quickly took them to the counter to pay for them.

“Hello.” I said the man at the counter. “Hello Miss, did you find everything okay?” he asked me. “Yes, I did, you have a very nice store.” He looked at me and chuckled, “Well thank you kindly miss, it’s not much but most folks around here like pretty well.” I stood quietly by the counter while the clerk checked my books and I paid for them. I grabbed the knob of the door and was about to walk out when I thought I saw something in the shadows. I looked for a few minutes and didn’t see anything so I went ahead and walked out onto the street. While walking I started thinking, this was the second time today I had thought I have seen something or someone and there had been nothing there, I stopped walking and looked up. I stood in the middle of the street gazing at the alleyway where I thought I had seen something, “This is completely insane.” I muttered to myself, I took a deep breath and started walking towards the alley; I am going to figure out what I keep seeing. I got closer to the opening of the alley and I felt a draft of cold air, it made the hair stand up on the back of neck, sending a chill down my spine.

I looked in a little before I walked into the alley, it was pretty dark except for one street light close to the end of the alley. I am just going to walk through and see if anyone is in here, I thought to myself. Slowly I started walking and I was about half way through when something made a noise behind me, I stopped in my tracks and squeezed my eyes shut hoping it was just a cat. I took a deep breath and turned around, there was nothing there, just some old newspaper lying on the ground. I turned around to start walking again when I bumped into something, I looked up, it was a man I screamed and tried to turn and run but slipped in the slime of the alleyway. I landed hard on my shoulder and my head bounced off the ground. I groaned and rolled onto my back with my eyes shut, a small sound escaped my lips, pain radiated through my shoulder when I moved. I opened my eyes to see if the man was still there, I looked up and he was standing above me looking down at me; through the haze I noticed that his eyes where black as coal yet somehow soft and assuring. “Who are you?” I whispered, “I am your protector,” He told me. I was about to say something when my world suddenly went black.

The first thing I notice is that I am warm, but at the same time I feel like I am being watched. Ok, I thought to myself, I am either on a bed or on a couch but I do not know where I am or if I am alone. I slowly open my eyes so I can see my surroundings, I am on a bed and it looks like the bed is in a cabin. I turn my head to look at the other side of the room, he was there looking at me with those black eyes. I held his gaze not wanting to let him know how scared I was, after a few minutes of silence he spoke. “How are your shoulder and your head?” For a minute I didn’t know what he was talking about and then I remembered the alleyway, “Um I’m not sure, I haven’t really moved around that much yet,” I told him. I kept eye contact with him while I was talking to him. He looked at me for a second and then said, “Well, let me help you up and I will check on your head and shoulder.” I almost didn’t take his hand but something inside me said that he was not trying to hurt me, just help me. I took his hand and let him help me up, his hand engulfs mine and it’s so warm. I stood up and started to fall, he caught me before I hit the floor. I let him hold me for a few minutes because the room was spinning and I feared if I let go of him I would fall. He gently laid me down on the bed again and leaned over me, my head and shoulder felt like it was literally moving up and down as it throbbed. I tried to hide the pain but I don’t think he was
