RockyCharmer-yo! found zip in old house. meet u @ clubhouse?
I texted Tori, and slung my green backpack over my shoulder. A couple of seconds later, my phone buzzed.
ToriCharmer-Def. C u in 5. BTW, will have meeting about new stealing hideouts.
I double-checked that I had everything then slipped out the window into the night air. It was about 32 degrees, and I pulled my simple gray jacket around myself tighter. I took a running leap off the roof and unfolded my tawny chestnut wings.
Being a 12 year old Charmer was difficult. I was very lucky to be in contact with nine others. We worked together to stay alive, twisting other people's thoughts to keep our secret safe. It was simple. If people thought we were mindless, bumbling, idiotic humans, we stayed alive.
My friends and I lived in a clubhouse built near a creek. There, we could be ourselves and plan our next moves.
I landed on the roof and shook out my wings, which were warm from the flight. Opening a small hatch in the top, I slid in.
Tori had beat me here and was popping open a can of coke. Namir flipped back her mousy brown hair impatiently as she bickered with Jason for the millionth time. Much to Namir's dismay, Jason had grown a couple inches taller over the past few mounths, and now towered over her. His honey brown hair hung in front of his face, desperately in need of a cut. I would go after him with the kitchen scissors later. Sapphire, Carrie, Liza, and Nick lounged on the sofas watching TV, and Rikki and Jesse had their noses in books. Everyone was back. Hmmmph.
My friends and I had a pretty good home. From the outside, it looked like a tattered old treehouse, but on the inside there was a kitchen (a microwave and cabinets), a lounging room with a mini fridge, snacks, soda, beanbag chairs, and a flat screen TV. There were many bedrooms, that we shared with each other. How did we get all of this stuff? Simple. Stealing of course. How did we get the room? Magic. But none of us were fully trained.
"Meeting!" shouted Tori and Jason simutaneosly. They acted like the leaders. Maybe because they were the oldest. Most leaderly? I have no clue. But it sure gets old listening to them boss us around all of the time.
Tori and Jason shared a glance that meant this was important.
"Guys. This is really important." Tori spoke gravely. Didn't I tell you?
"We've," said Jason tentatively. "Enrolled you guys in school." He finished in a rush. WHAAAT??!!! We were freaks! This couldn't happen! It would never work! We were always hidden and always would be! People either want us or want us dead. No. Jason and Tori didn't control our lives. We deserved to have a say in this. I had a say in this. This. Could. Not. Happen. But if I didn't convince them... if they didn't listen...... I would....... do the unthinkable. I would leave.
