chapter 1 - discovery

sitting across from my aunt's executor of estates, bored as a hamster with one leg, listening to him read through my aunt's last will and testament, i can't help but wish i was outside at the beach soaking up some sun that peeked through the windows of Mr Shire's office windows...

"and now we come to the last part of Miss Ronnie Graie's estate... as i appreciate you all coming here today, and waiting around listening to me speak..." this with a pointed look at me, "the last part has been kept in my trust on the specific note that it not be divulged until after a month's mass of mourning... the specific nature of Miss Graie's will was that all relevant notaries be present for what i'm about to say... i have been the families lawyer and estate trustee for the last 30 odd years and my family before that, so i did find this request rather unusual least to say" Mr Shire spoke, obviously uncomfortable with the heat and whatever he was about to say...

"whats the old goat got to say for herself then... mmmm?" my obnoxious brother Deagan piped in, more bored than me, since i knew he was annoyed at missing the game with his friends for this...

"well Deagan as you quite perceptively put it, `The Old Goat` wanted to tell you all this before she died, but as it was vetoed by family to tell the next generation before the second eldest's 30th birthday, that the family had an inheritance that could be construed as `crazy` as i have heard it be refered to as before..."

"Now as you are all aware, the family's history can be traced back to the earliest 11th century in Andora and Wales, along with this came the roots and mysticism that purports to such regions, and yes folks, it is with great honour and esteem to tell you that your family is 61st generation Graielyn" Mr Shire smiles as if its some great discovery and we're all supposed to know what that means...

"ummm what exactly is a Graielyn, Mr Shire?" Lyssa asks as confused as the rest of us...

"well i am sure you guys and girls have heard of `Brownies` and `Faeries`, so its kind of like both, but without all the hyped up nonsence that's on television"

"oh great, so i can like fly through the air and wave a magic wand and walk through walls aye" Erynne laughs, totally amused by this new bit of information as if its some kind of joke...

"no Erynne you cannot walk through walls, wave magic wands or fly through the air, although am sure you would like to do that at some point..."

"well what is Graielyn's about then? why all the secrecy and dragons about something so passe?" i ask, ready to walk through a wall soon or at least try lol...

"it was decided by your great-grandmothers great-grandmother and aunts several centuries ago, during the times of the old witch hunts, as a way of protecting the younger generations from persecussion and trauma growing up with the gifts your ancestors passed on to each generation, back in the earlier days when it was normal to have gifts like empathy and prescience or telepathy, society didn't hate on your ancestors as they did during the witch hunt era, and as yet society still peers down at it as if its some kind of fake blarney or insanity or hysteria"

"okay so now that we know, what are we supposed to do about it? are we supposed to go out and fight dragons or cure cancer or god knows what else?"

"thats upto you Charlotte, or your siblings and cousins to find out... as i am aware from what your family has told me, some of you are more aware of what you can or cannot do already, its just a measure of focusing on your gifts, on what you can or cannot do and making it better than what it is now"....
