Prologue

Dark clouds raced across the sky, taking over every speck of light and devouring it into nothingness. While a foreboding flash of lighting illuminated the sky, giving away the horrific scene. The trees were dancing with the winds, as a lone wolf howled its last breath in the distance. I was crawled up against a building, frozen, unable to move. I saw a shadow of a hooded figure slowly coming towards us. I heard its claws scrapping against the walls of the buildings that surround us. There was nowhere to escape; hope seems to be deteriorating. I felt the urgency of the man and woman next to me increase as the thing came closer. The man and women suddenly started to glow, and little by little they became strangers. The man whispered something to the woman and she ran towards me. The woman clutched my arm and pulled me with her into the corner of the alley.
Her eyes were filled with dark clouds of pain as she placed her hand over my arm. Her hands glowed brighter than the rest of her body as pain erupted through my hand fogging my vision. The tears were overwhelming me and I wanted to scream but nothing came out of my mouth. The pain slowly subsided as she took her hand off of my arm and whispered “…sorry…” into my ear. The man suddenly shouted for help and the woman left me and ran towards her husband. I saw the shadow overwhelm the two strangers. Blood was gushing out escaping from the wrath of the shadow and slowly both of them dropped to the floor. The shadow slowly disappeared into the night, leaving behind two empty shells.
It’s been 10 years since that ‘incident’ happened. I’m 16 years old and my name is Alexandre Conner Brosseau, It means protector of men, but that’s a joke. I can’t even protect myself. Ever since that day I’ve been moving around from foster home to foster home living under the shadows of adults. I felt like I was frozen in time, I was chained to the past; just hoping this was all just a nightmare. But considering my luck I won’t wake up anytime soon. I spent so much time to fit in, just to be a normal kid but maybe I might never be one.
At nights sometimes I see things, maybe they are hallucinations as my physiatrist said it was, but the problem is they felt real. I sometimes see things nobody sees, and realize I don’t fit in this world. Whenever I asked my physiatrist about that night, she always says that
the house we used to live in caught fire and they weren’t lucky enough to make it out. I knew she was lying. Whenever I bring it up she hesitates for a quick second, her eyes look away, and she twitches her nose. As I said I see things others can’t or just don’t notice.
Do you believe in the supernatural? Did you ever experience something that could never be explained, it felt like your eyes betrayed you. I never did; I always thought that my parents were viciously murdered; that’s why everyone hid it from me. But what happened that night was anything but normal. It was something that couldn’t be explained; something supernatural. I knew I was different, and sometimes I wonder if I’m human at all.

Windmore manor

I was nervous, even though this was the 5th time I moved to a different foster home, I didn’t know what to expect. Will my new foster parents like me? Will the other kids be my friends? This is supposed to be my permanent home; this is where I’m going to spend the rest of my life, well at least till I’m 18. I was in a car watching as my social worker talked to Mr. and Mrs. Wendell, I watched them talk about what my record, my past, and deciding my future. And I watched as their eyes widened, and I knew Janette Brosmer was telling them about my past. It’s always the same, every single routine, and every single lie. Janette always described me as a “unique” person or the “troubled kid” but I guess everyone in this world hates people who are different and aren’t as good as the rest of them.
Janette waved her hand signaling me to get out of the car and meet my new ‘family.’ I took a deep breath and pulled the handle and set out to my new adventure. As I walked towards the house it overwhelmed me, it felt different than the other foster homes I went to; it felt like home. The old building had gargoyles; they were stationed at the front of the house like a guard dog willing to bite anyone that threatens the peace the strange house has. I walked through the gate and I swear I could felt its eyes following me till I entered. As I got closer it looked like a house they would use for a horror movie. It was weird how I thought of this more of a home then the other normal houses around the street. Janette turned to me and said “Alex this is Mr. and Mrs. Wendell” “Hi Alex nice to finally meet you” Mrs. Wendell said cheerfully “Hi…” I replied
“Welcome to the Windmore manor Alex, I heard you have a hard time settling in, and I hope we can fix that” Said Mr. Wendell. I just nodded my head; it felt awkward, and the conversation felt forced. “Alex Lets go inside I’ll show you your room; I’m pretty sure you’re hungry after that long trip, I made pasta your favorite and there’s also cake” Mrs. Wendell said too cheerfully. I looked over at Janette to see if it was okay and saw her nod her head. I followed Mrs. Wendell inside while Mr. Wendell was talked to Janette. They seemed too cheerful; I had to keep my guard up, no telling what they will do. I followed her to the hallway; the hallway was all scratched up with claw marks. For the first time I felt terrified, I was following a stranger to who knows what. As I said the house seemed to be something from a horror movie especially with the dark aura that surrounded the place. It wouldn’t be a bad place for Freddy cougar to live, it was felt evil and there was burn marks on the ceiling.
“Mrs. Wendell….” I looked and realized she’s nowhere to be seen. I checked the rooms one by one, it’s like she disappeared. After checking the last one in the hall I turned around and was startled by her sudden appearance. I saw her holding a knife dripping in blood; my heart started to race. “Alex, at last I found you” she said. I started to back away but she followed me; every step I made back she came forward. “Alex are you okay? You don’t seem well; Maybe you gotten sick over the long trip, come here and let me check” She started to walk closer as she raised the knife slowly; she was only 3 steps away when I heard a bloodcurdling scream. My mind was terrified; who screamed, did Mr. Wendell kill Janette, am I next? I saw Mrs. Wendell’s face surprised and confused. Suddenly my head and stomach exploded with pain; my vision became foggy and slowly I became unconscious.
