(Kuro Kaneko)
I jolt up from my sleep, all thoughts clouded as I look around my bedroom.
‘Mirror, door, vanity, closet and bed phew, I thought for sure I was somewhere else.’
I thought to myself as relief was beginning to recede back into my body. I look over at the clock
“6:00 A.M. Looks like I’m not gonna get anymore sleep now, am I?” In that moment I hear a loud banging on my iron door.
“Please come in!” I shouted over the insistent banging. The person who enters my room is none other than my fiancé Shiro Kaneko.
“I heard you scream after you woke up, are you ok?” Concern was completely threaded in his tone. He reaches his hand out to comfort me.
“I’m perfectly fine.” I look over and see that he’s going to comfort me I don’t even like the guy, “don’t touch me!” I slap his hand away and it makes a loud echo in the room. I look around, hoping that no one heard that and rushed in concerned with the noise. I get up from my bed and I glare and the man still sitting there staring at me, shock staining his features, “What are you still doing here? Get out!” I shout at him as loudly as possible without waking up the rest of the castle. After he left the room, I sighed with relief as I pulled out a nice dress of Burgandy and gold. I sigh while putting on the dress. I walk out of my room nonchalantly as if nothing had ever happened. As I begin to stroll down the corridor and into the foyer I hear an all too familiar voice:
“Princess!” I turn towards our best nobleman, Daisuke.
“Nobleman Daisuke, to what do I owe this encounter?” he looks at me with sorrow etching onto his features. My face turns to immediate worry as tears begin to stream down his angel-like face, “Daisuke, please tell me what is troubling you?” he looks me straight in the eyes.
“I-it’s your parents.” Shock etched onto my features.
‘Could my dream have become a premonition?’
I thought as panic and worry began to run rampant in my mind as I jumped to the worst case scenario.
“Daisuke! Take me to my parent’s chamber now!” He grabbed my hand and ran me straight down to my parents’ chamber to reveal that it looked like my father had passed in his sleep, as did my mother for they were not breathing when I placed my ear to their mouths. I began to walk out of the room so I could go back to my chamber and sob out my sorrow, but I had stopped myself when I heard what sounded like the faint wail of a very young child. I turned myself around to the sight of a child in my mother’s arms then it hit me like a ton of bricks.
‘Oh no, mother had to have passed due to giving child birth.’
I picked up the child and held it close to me as I sobbed uncontrollably.
‘The poor thing.’
I turn towards the midwife.
“Has this child been given a name of some sort?” I look a gleam of hope in my eyes. She looks at me with that of disappointment.
“Before she was born, your father had already passed, your mother passed after she was born.” A tear streamed down her face, “Since you are left, you may name her.” I looked down at her and a name hit me in an instant.
“I know what I can name you…Kiseki because you’re a little miracle.” She opened her beautiful muddy-topaz eyes, and I could only gawk at her with awe knowing that I would have to help take care of such a beautiful child.
‘My life has just been turned upside down! I wake up knowing that my fiancé is even more madly in love with me than I am with him, my parents are both dead, and I have a child to take care of. Either this is karma, or this is just not my day.’
As I leave my parents’ chamber, Kiseki in tow I bump in to none other than Shiro. This really is not my day.
“I heard the commotion, what’s going on?” I really don’t want to tell him anything, but it’s better than just having all this internal turmoil.
“If you must know, both my parents have-” I cut myself off as I felt my brave face that I put on for so many others was beginning to fail me. I ran off knowing that he was just right behind me. He caught up to me and placed his arms around my waist the way a lover would.
“Just tell me what’s-” I head-butted him and he immediately let go.
“DON’T TOUCH ME!” I screamed in his face as loudly as possible. After that I just broke down and said calmly to him, “how long are you willing to play this game of cat and mouse? I honestly know you like me, and I respect you entirely.” I let out a long and heavy sigh, “what I’m trying to tell you is that I don’t have the same feelings for you. Can we just call off this silly engagement? I have way too many things to worry about now, than I did before.” His initial look of shock faded to a look of understanding and he looked me in the eyes.
“Princess, I understand wholeheartedly.” He said, he just waved to me and walked on his own merry way, whistling and all.
‘That was a bit weird, but I know that I don’t have to worry about him anymore. I just felt like I was constantly burdening him.’
Kiseki began to whimper from a possible nightmare. I shushed her gently and hummed as we made it back to my chamber. To my relief the midwife placed the crib in my room already. I placed Kiseki into the crib gently and she continued to lay in subconscious bliss. I smiled at her adorable face; I walked out to the balcony to reveal that the first soft rays of dawn were appearing from under the treetops.
‘I’ve come to realize, that it’s the simple joys and miracles of life that seem to always catch us off guard. When they don’t catch us off guard well, then it’s just an average day.’
I calmly watched the sunrise inch its way up over the trees.
