The Awakening
Prolouge
It was six-o'clock in the morning; when I woke up to the sound of rain pounding on the roof and to lightning lighting up the dark gray sky. Thunder rolled and the wind made the tree bang against my window. I laid there for a moment and when I couldn't get back to sleep I went downstairs. When I got to the kitchen I tried the switch, but soon realized that the power was out. I leaned up against the wall and sighed. I stood there for a moment and then realized that we had some candles in the cabinet. I went across the kitchen and down the hall. I opened the cabinet and luckily for me as soon as I opened the cabinet lightning lit up the sky and I was able to see. I grabbed a candle and a holder and then went out to the kitchen to light it. After the candle was lit I had enough light to look through the refrigerator and find a snack. I took out an orange and then grabbed the candle and went back upstairs.
After eating my orange; I threw out the peelings, blew out the candle and then laid down letting sleep take over.

When I woke up that same day it was ten- thirty and it wasn't to the sound of thunder rolling it was to Emma (my best friend) on my computer playing god knows what music on my laptop.
“Okay" I pleaded “You can turn that off"
“Oh good you’re up" she said, pressing on the pause button. She stood up and walked over to my bed.
“Who let you in" I said.
“Your mom" she said. “Anyway, I was watching a show on TV--" I cut her off before she could go on any further.
“No" I said " The last time you watched a show and got an idea we almost got in trouble" the last time Emma got an idea it was to do an investigation on some guy who she thought was a criminal.
“We did not" she said.
“Emma the guy had a gun" I said” You're lucky he was friends with my dad" she stared at me pleading for me to hear her out.
"Fine what is it?" I finally said.
“There’s this place in the woods" she said "I want to go there and try this" she handed me a piece of paper that said. Awakening Spell.
“Emma you know it’s not going to work" I said.
“I know, but I'm bored and we need the candles and stones anyways"
I looked at what we needed to perform the spells and there it was candles, stones and a person who desires to have magick. “Well, it says only one person needs to go" I paused “So, you go and tell me how it goes"
“Alyssa" she said “I don't want to go by myself, so please come with me"
“It would just be a waste of our time" I said.
“Come on" she said pleadingly.
"Fine" I said.
“Thanks you’re the best, " she said, hopping up. “Okay I'll let you get ready while I go and get everything that we need"
“Okay, " I said, getting up and walking out of my bedroom. I went downstairs and into the kitchen. Emma followed quickly behind me. “What time do we have to do it?"
“Dusk" she said.
“Seriously" I said.
“Hey, you already said you would do it " she said. I glared at Emma showing that I was not happy with this, but I wasn't willing to back out of something I said I would already do and Emma knew that. The phone rang and dad picked it up and then said “It’s for you"
I took the phone and looked at the phone number, saw that it was Kyle (my boyfriend) and said “Hello"
“Hey babe" Kyle said “are you busy?"
"Not really, " I said “Why, what's up"
“Can we talk” he said" Like in an hour"
"Sure" I said. He said goodbye and hung up the phone Emma was staring at me waiting for me to spill." He wants to talk"
“Good or bad" She said. I looked at her and she instantly knew that he wanted to break up "Oh girl I’m sorry"
"We weren't going anywhere" I said. I had my doubts about Kyle for a while now.
“I know, but I know how much you liked him " she said.
“Yeah " I said” Well, I should go get ready" I went upstairs, leaving my dad and Emma behind in the kitchen. Once in my room, I closed my bedroom door and then went into the bathroom to check if my towels were hanging up in their regular spot. When I saw that they were I closed the bathroom door and started the shower. I took out the hair tie that held my long dark brown hair and then hopped into the shower, the warm water felt nice against my bare skin. After washing my hair, body and I shut the water off and got out. I wrapped my towel around me and the opened the door and walked into my room. I walked over to my dresser and picked out a red tank top and dark blue jeans. I quickly dried off and then slipped on a purple and black striped bra with matching underwear. I put on the red tank top and then found a gray button up, half sleeve cardigan in the closet. I took it off the coat hanger and then put it on. I picked up my towels as I went to grab my jeans and then placed them back in their regular spot; on the bathroom door. I then put on my jeans, they were dark blue, and they flared at the bottom. They had yellow and pink gems around the waist and on the back pockets. After I was fully dressed I grabbed my brush and went back into the bathroom. I plugged in the blow dryer but before turning it on I brushed through my hair. After I knew I couldn’t get any further with brushing my wet hair I turned on the blow drier.
Within ten minutes my hair was somewhat dry but I was able to brush through it successfully. I pulled my hair back with a clip and then went on to doing my make-up. When I was done the black eyeliner and mascara made my dark sapphire eyes pop out. I walked out of my bathroom and over to my closet and took out a pair of sandals. I sat on my bed and put them on and then went downstairs. Emma was gone and I really wished that she wasn’t. Dad was still in the kitchen and I said;
“Hey, I’m going to see Kyle in the park” My dad never really liked Kyle because he thought that I could do ten times better and he thought that Kyle would be going nowhere in life.
“Okay” he said “Don’t be gone too long” he paused “We have a dinner party over at your uncles” I didn’t want to go to that and my dad knew that.
“Do I really have to go?” I asked.
“Your mom would like it if you did” he said.
“Emma and I made plans weeks before you told me about this dinner party” I said. That was partially a lie, but I was willing to do anything to get out of having to go to this party.
“Can’t you cancel them?” he said.
“That would be like me asking you to cancel your plans Dad” I said. He knew I was right; and he still wanted me to go just to make my mother happy. But despite what he wanted he said;
“Fine” he paused “you don’t have to go”
“Thanks” I said. I looked over at the clock and saw that it was twelve minutes past noon and then said ”I should probably go” Dad just nodded and then went back to reading his newspaper and sipping his coffee.
The park was peaceful and calm. Every once in a while you would hear a dog barking or kids playing around and it was nice to see and hear people having a good time here. I walked over to a park bench that was just about ten feet away from a lake and sat down. Moments later Emma came up to me and said;
“You’re early aren’t you?” I jumped up.
“God, you got to stop doing that” I said.
“Sorry” she said “Has he come yet?”
“No, I wanted to come a little bit early to think about what I should say” I said.
“And?” she said.
“I don’t know” I said.
“Okay” she said. Emma never like Kyle, she actually despised him, but what I heard come from her mouth shocked me. “You have doubts about him right” I nodded and she went on “Then do yourself a favor and end it”
“But what if we can make this work?” I said.
“Alyssa if you’re unhappy and have doubts then there’s really no point” she said. I knew she was right and I was kind of angry at her for being so right.
“Did you get the stuff?” I asked, purposely changing the subject.
“Yeah” she said “You know how hard it was to find herbal candles?”
“I’m guessing hard” I said.
“Yeah, very” she said “I mean almost all the stores sold them, but they weren’t real herbal candles” she paused “Only one store sold the real ones and luckily for me I got a discount”
“How did you manage that?” I asked.
“Oh, I knew the guy who worked there and I promised him I would let him take me out on a date” she said.
“Seriously?” I said “where did you go anyways”
“That store on bad river road” she said.
“Emma” I said “You know we’re not supposed to be in that part of town”
“Hey” she paused “Just because it has a bad reputation does not mean anything”
“Yeah to you, it doesn’t, ” I said “But my dad has busted a lot of people there”
“Well, I’m fine, okay” she said. I never really like that part of town, even before my dad became the chief of police and started arresting people there.
“No not okay” I said “I don’t want to have to find my best friend dead in a body bag” all I could think about was that girl who went missing a few weeks after school had ended. Her name was Alex and she was in that part of town the day she was last seen.
“You worry too much” she said. I looked past Emma and saw Kyle walking over. Emma turned around and saw Kyle and then turned back around and said “Are you coming over later?” she asked and she already knew that question. But, I nodded anyway and then she got up and left. Again, I wished that Emma had stayed with me, honestly, I was a little bit scared to find out what Kyle wanted to talk to me about but then I wasn’t.
“Hey” he said. He kissed me on the cheek and then hugged me. Kyle was maybe a few inches taller than I was (I’m 5’6 so
