First off, let me tell you that if you are reading this then you too have been chosen to become a Tashinti, or a cat person. You will realize that this will help you survive as one of us. Tashinti have been around for longer that I can remember and that’s a pretty long time, so just relax as you read, and even if you don’t think you are one of us, keep it that way and pray you aren’t. You’ll live a lot longer.
My name is Artemis Powell for starters and I live in New York with my mom and three cats, Taka, Lima, and Apollo. I actually have a pretty interesting story about my dad. When I was three years old my dad left us to go back to Australia with is other family. My mom always says he’ll come back but it’s been 11 years since he left and if you ask me, we’re better off without him. Right now we’re living pretty well. We live in a very expensive apartment penthouse. We’re able to afford to live here because off the money my mum makes as an actress and we also get a lot of money from my Grandpa and Gram in England. I stay with them when I’m in England so get used to me talking like a British person. But anyway, I love my cats as if they are my sisters. I have always loved cats and my entire room is decorated for cats. My walls are leopard spotted like my cat Taka and my rug is solid black just like my cat Lima. Apollo is a different story. I found her wandering around the park one day and she followed me home and never left so my mum and I adopted her and now she’s part of the family. Just to let you get a general sense of what my cats look like Taka has a leopard pelt and deep chocolate brown eyes, Lima is a solid black cat with green eyes, and Apollo is a white cat with sparkly grayish blue eyes. But the craziness in this story started when I decided that I was going to stay in New York with my mum and go to school here. But I also promised I would go back to England to see my grandparents during spring break with my mum. But it all started when I walked into my room and found a letter on my bed .I was tired from my long day at school so I walked into my bathroom to have a much deserved bubble bath. I love taking baths because it’s relaxing and I like lighting my candles I have in my bathroom just for bubble baths. But soon enough my bathroom was smelling like cinnamon and vanilla. Now most people think cats hate water. This is mostly true but my cats like to sit in my bathroom with me while I’m in there. Sometimes they’ll jump up on the ledge of the tub and sit there, even though it’s wet. My cat’s are very strange. But anyway I eventually got out of my bathroom and put on a pair of jeans and my favorite shirt and walked over to my bed, where I left the note. The envelope was purple and scented like vanilla. I was definitely going to keep the envelope for two reasons: 1 my favorite color is purple and 2 vanilla is my favorite scent. So after carefully opening the envelope I put it in my drawer, then I read the letter, it reads: “My dearest daughter Artemis Jasmine Powell, I am ever so sorry that was never there for you when you were growing up. I am writing this to let you know that I have always loved your mother and I still love you. But I am not writing this to tell you how much I love you, I am writing this because I know your 15th birthday is approaching soon. On the eve of your birthday you will be encountered by a boy about your age has the strange resemblance of a cat. You must do what he wants you to do or else he will become violent and try to take you by force. I do not want you to be afraid but if you have any questions ask your mother. She has been through this before and will know how to prepare you. You will also start to understand the native language of the Tashinti cat people. Good luck and I love you- Your Father”. I couldn’t believe what I had just read. But I didn’t have time to think about it because I heard my mum walk in the room. “Artemis, why are you crying?” I didn’t even realize I was crying, but not because I was scared I was crying because I had finally had contact with my long lost father. “Mum, this is why I’m crying”, I handed her the letter and she took it carefully as if she were handling a very ancient a fragile document. “Where did you get this”, she asked after she was done reading, I could see the tears in her eyes. “I don’t know where it came from, it was laying on my bed when I got home from school.” I answered. My mom walked over to my bed and sat down, still holding the letter like her life depended on it. “It’s time I told you about your father, Artemis.” I was nervous to find out what she had to say but I walked over and sat down next to her. “ I was young when I met your father, we were both working on movie set together in Australia. He was my co star and while we were on set we ended up falling in love. We were together for four years until we finally got married, then I got an acting job here and we decided to stay here permanently and start a family. But three years after you were born your father left to go back to Australia and I never heard from him again. But now I realize that all of the pictures and letters I have from him all have a reference to cats. But a couple of weeks ago I had a dream from when I was 15 years old, I had met a boy much like your father who wanted me to come with him back to his world.” I couldn’t sit there any longer without a question, “Do you mean the world of Tsarina?” I asked, “Yes sweetie, that’s what I’m talking about, anyway, your father is right. I do know exactly what is going on and when this boy comes for you I want you to go with him, no matter how scared you may be I want you to go with him.” She said, “But what about my cats? I can’t leave them!” I said frantically. She just nodded and said, “Take them with you as well as your phone and necklace. You won’t need anything else, I promise.” She gave me a forced and watery smile, “But what about you mom, what’ll happen to you?” I asked, as more tears rolled down my face, “Don’t worry about me I’ll be fine.” She smiled one more time and then she left. The last thing I remember is curling up on my bed with all my cats and my necklace, ready for whatever was going to happen.
