A golden she-cat stood at the edge of a gorge. She tilted her head and gazed at the stars.
"There you are, Goldenfur." A silver tom padded up to her. "I've been looking all over."
"Where did you think I was, Silverclaw? In a bush?" Goldenfur asked, purring.
Silverclaw settled down. "I didn't think you would come back to the gorge."
"I missed it." Goldenfur entwined her tail in his. "This is where we first met."
"Why do we meet in secret?" Silverclaw blurted. "We're both WindClan, and neither of us is a medicine cat."
"I wanted to meet in secret this time..." Goldenfur took a breath. Then she whispered, "I wanted you to be know I'm having kits."
There was silence for a few moments, then a cat jumped out of the bushes.
Goldenfur took a step back, and fell into the gorge.
"Mothflight!" Silverclaw bellowed at the cat who had made his made fall into the gorge.
But Mothflight hadn't heard. She had jumped into the gorge after Goldenfur.
"Mouse-brain," Silverclaw muttered. He watched helplessly as Mothflight grabbed Goldenfur's scruff. The she-cats made their way to the river in the gorge's bank.l
"Is she all right?" Silverclaw asked nervously.
"Yes," Mothflight called up. "But we're not alone!"
Silverclaw realized what she meant.
"How many?" he asked. "Are they all there?"
"I think so," Mothflight replied. "There are three. Two toms and a she-kit."
"Wait there." Silverclaw disappeared into the trees. "I'll go get help."
In the gorge, Goldenfur lapped her kits.
Oh, Silverclaw,

she thought, gazing at a kit who looked exactly like her mate. Be quick.

Chapter One

Tigerkit yawned and stretched. The sky was clear, so he could look at the blazing sun above him.
"Tigerkit!" his brother, Gorgekit, called. "Watch out!"
Tigerkit looked up to see his sister, Meadowkit, pounce on him.
"Get out of my way, ShadowClan warrior!" Tigerkit meowed. The kits tumbled around.
"Mur-ow!" Meadowkit wailed in fright as they fell into the river. There was a flash of white, and Tigerkit felt teeth on his scruff. Mothflight, the cat that had taken care of them besides their mother, heaved him onto the riverbank. Then she scanned the water for Meadowkit.
There was a flash of gold, and Mothflight dived in. She caught hold of a golden tail- Meadowkit's tail!
Mothflight dragged Tigerkit's sister onto the other riverbank. She lay, panting, while Mothflight licked her.
"StarClan help her!" their mother, Goldenfur, yowled.
"She'll be fine, Goldenfur," Mothflight meowed. "Stop acting like you've seen a fox."
Mothflight bent down to Meadowkit. "You ready?"
Meadowkit nodded, taking a breath.
Mothflight swam back to Tigerkit, Gorgekit and Goldenfur withe Meadowkit in her jaws.
"So she is

all right?" Tigerkit asked nervously.
"She is fine

," Mothflight answered, exasperated.
