you swear an oath to him,β and he jerked a thumb back at the pirate captain, βI do, too.β
A slow smile spread across the pirateβs face, his teeth gleaming yellow in the light of the lantern. βI think I like this plan! Fenton, make it so!β
The other pirate chuckled and headed back up the stairs to do his captainβs bidding.

The pirate captain has long since died, along with his first mate and many others, but by hard work and the firm decision to make the best of my circumstances, I eventually became the captain of this vile fleet β perhaps not as vile as it would have been under the command of another. In exchange for larger shares of the booty, my crew agreed to refrain from cruel practiced against captives.
And while Iβm still a pirate, I have a name I can live with β Captain Jake, Gentleman Pirate of the Caribbean.
