walked off. I heard a motorcycle start up and I watched as he pulled off. I sighed as I wondered what it would have been like riding on the back of a motorcycle with Skip, mostly I thought about how it would be to have him that close but when I realized what I was thinking I cleared my head and thought about anything but Skip and his glossy black motorcycle.
Camber showed up awhile after that. I made sure the windows were rolled up, the door was locked and I had my phone and keys before I made a run for it to Cambers punch bug. I hopped in and immediately asked for her phone. I called my mom and told her what happened and that my car was still on the side of the road. She said she would call someone to go get it before something happened to it but most of all she was just glad I was ok. Afterwards I got the nine degree by Camber. “Whose phone did you use?” she demanded. I looked out the window and prepared myself.
“Skip’s” I said as quietly as I could. “Shut up! Oh my gosh, this is good…please tell me you weren’t rude this time” she frowned. “No I wasn’t rude…” I mumbled, knowing that my two worded answers always made her angry. She wanted details, what clothes he was wearing, what his hair looked like, did he stare into my eyes or just my boobs. And sure enough she asked every question I guessed she would and I had to answer them. I decided not to tell her that he drove a motorcycle, I didn’t feel like hearing her get all worked up over it. She loved guys with motorcycles and she was dying to date one.
As we walked into the bowling alley she got excited all over again. “I just realized something!” she said in a sing song voice. “What?” I asked. “I now have Skip’s number!” she nearly screamed. My eyes widened and I felt like I just got slapped in the face. Camber was unreliable when it came to her and boys. My mind went through all the different things she could do. She could try to hook me up with him behind my back, she could try to get herself hooked up with him or she could use his number as a threat and black mail me to get me to do what ever she wants. I frowned then decided that I would ask to use her phone later and delete his number from her phone.
As we approached the group I started to feel a little nervous. Wes was here and I was pretty sure that Camber had told him something along the lines of me being obsessed with him, which I wasn’t. “Forgot to tell you Lamey, you look so cute!” she smiled as she eyed my outfit. I looked down at myself. I looked dainty with my vintage floral shirt, dark skinny jeans and nude flats, but just because I looked dainty didn’t mean I was. I could be quite the tomboy at times and I only dressed like this when I felt like it. My usual outfit would consist of graphic tees, skinny jeans, and converse. “Umm, thanks” I said looking anywhere but near where Wes was. “Wesley, doesn’t Laney look cute today?” Camber asked nonchalantly. My eyes widened and I elbowed her as I glared at the floor in embarrassment. “She sure does” he answered. I chanced a glance at him and blushed. His hazel eyes were focused on my face, I fidgeted, happy when Camber started talking. “So, who’s playing?” she asked, flipping her blonde hair here and there.
I sat in one of the plastic seats and watched as each person went. First Kyle, who was thin and pale and I had expected to get a gutter ball but he got a strike which surprised me. Second, Camber who got a gutter ball. Then, a girl who I think is named Faith went and she knocked down four pins then she got a spare. Wes went next getting himself a strike. After that, I lost track of who got what. I watched as they cheered and bantered with each other and wished that I didn’t feel like such an outsider. Later, most of them got hungry and went to the snack bar. I followed. After I got my drink I hopped on the bar stool and watched Camber from afar as she flirted with some random dude in the lane next to them.
“She’s pretty shameless” someone said, taking a seat next to me. I knew it was Wes and I suddenly felt all giddy and nervous. “She’s horrible” I smiled. “Can I ask you a question?” he asked turning towards me. I nodded, playing with my hands. “How are you two even friends, I mean, she’s…and you’re…” he paused, trying to think of a nicer way to put it. “What you mean is, how is a geek like me friends with Camber?” I said in a joking way. He shook his head. “No, I meant, how is a nice girl like you friends with a…umm…what’s a nice name for a girl who sleeps around a lot?” he asked. I laughed.
“I don’t think there are any, but I get what you mean and I don’t really know we just have always been different but it’s never really mattered, well not to me anyways” I explained, fiddling with my hands nervously. “Wes, you’re up!” Kyle called from the lane. Wes hopped down and stood there for a second. “Guess we’ll talk more later” he said but it sounded like a question. I nodded and smiled shyly, as he walked towards the group. I stayed where I was. I couldn’t believe I had just talked to him; I was surprised I didn’t stutter or say anything stupid.
Camber and I left early, and as we were going to leave Wes came up and hugged me. It was one of those lazy one arm hugs. My heart nearly exploded. He smiled down at me, showing off his dimples. I blushed and smiled back shyly. “We should hang out, soon” he said as he let me go. I nodded in agreement. Camber came up and linked arms with me pulling me towards the parking lot. “Well, I see you two hit it off and I didn’t even have to threaten anyone…it’s a good sign” she assured me. As soon as she said threaten I remembered that she had Skip’s number. “Can I use your phone again?” I asked.
She tossed it to me as she started the car and backed out. I went through her recent calls and deleted the only one that was unknown and then I dialed up my mom and told her I was on my way home. She was still at work so I would be alone, which was fine.
When Camber dropped me off I noticed my car in the drive way. I walked in the house and immediately noticed that I was really tired. I fumbled to my room in the dark and kicked off my shoes as I flopped on my bed. As I fell asleep, I thought of Skip then of Wes, they were the only two guys who had ever seriously paid any attention to me. The question was, who should I pay attention to?

Chapter three
I woke up to the smell of bacon. After stretching and yawning multiple times, I headed to the kitchen looking like yesterday. My mom was scrambling eggs when I walked in. She’s tall, dark haired, and is fair skinned. I got my tanned complexion from my dad, who is Italian. She eyed me as I stole some bacon.
That was the thing about us; we occasionally ate breakfast food in the afternoon. We were not morning people. “What are you doing today?” she asked as she handed me a plate. I shrugged as I put pancakes and bacon on my plate, avoiding the eggs. I hated them. “I was thinking about chilling for a little while at the park” I said stuffing my mouth with food. She stared at my face for a minute, her warm brown eyes reminding me of my own. “What?” I asked. She shook her head and showed a small smile. “Nothing, I just miss you is all” she said, smiling again. I wiped my mouth and grinned at her. “Love you” I said cheerfully. “I love you too” she said.
After I ate, I showered and dressed. I slid on a pair of skinny jeans with a dark blue tight fitted shirt, and my black flats. I headed out with my iPod and a book in tow. As I pulled into the parks parking lot I noticed that there was barely anyone here. Probably because it had rained yesterday and now the park was filled with puddles, but it was sunny out and I wasn’t worried about mud puddles. I followed the running trial into the thin wooded area to find a bench to read my book. I found one a little far back from the trail. I sat cross legged and put in my ear phones in as I opened my book. I wasn’t going to listen to music, it was just something I did so no one would come up and talk to me.
I figured if they thought I couldn’t hear them they wouldn’t bother me. While I read I would occasionally look up when a jogger would come pass me. It eventually got too hot for me to concentrate on reading. I had my hair up in a messy bun and my bang was sticking to my forehead from sweat. As I was debating whether I should leave or stay, a jogger caught my eye. He had on black basketball shorts and one of those white athletic shirts that people who actually exercise wears. I was pretty sure it was Skip. I wondered if he saw me. I glanced down at my book and pretended to be reading. He had seen me. I heard him approach slowly.
I looked up from my book to catch a sly smile and his intensely sharp blue eyes. I gave him a small smile. He was sweaty and his face was flushed. His hair was plastered to his forehead and his shirt was sticking to him from sweating, showing off his muscles. He sat next to me. I pulled out my ear phones and closed my book. “Don’t you think its weird how we keep running into each other?” he asked. I shrugged. “Never really thought about it” I answered. “I think it’s a sign” he said.
I uncrossed my legs and stretched them. “Really?” I said for lack of anything else to say. “Yeah, so that’s why I think you should hang out with me tonight” he said, his icy eyes probing me. I got the goose bump feeling again and still couldn’t tell if it was a good thing or not. I thought it over while I bit my lip. “Where would we go?” I asked. He thought for a second. “There’s not really much around here and I doubt you would let me take you out of town so I guess the movies” he answered. Around here, if a boy takes you to the movies it usually means that he wants to make out but when I go to
