lake, a sliver of light to the east announcing the coming of dawn. Ahead, through drifting ice crystals, a yellow light illuminated a single window in the Hudsonβs Bay post as smoke began its lazy accent in the frozen morning air.
Half a mile. Frank pressed on. The distance shrank to half that, then a hundred yards, and finally, releasing the harness, he ran up the stairs and began pounding on the door.
βHold your horses. Iβm coming. Iβm coming,β a voice inside said.
When the door opened, Helen, brushing Frank aside, rushed inside. Laying her precious baby on the store counter, she unwrapped him and felt his forehead, then bowed her head. Frank stood beside her, holding Josephβs little fingers. Turning to her man, Helen buried her face in his chest and wept uncontrollably.
They had reached their goal, but baby Josephβs journey had ended. Frank held her close, wondering why the Creator had given them such a beautiful baby, only to take him away. Imprint
