grand hall, during the day will be stationed outside Charlie’s room at different points in the corridor” explained Jeff “And Charlie will remain in her room throughout the day”
Oh great, what possibly could be my last day and I have to spend it locked in my room guarded by about twenty guards.
“Do I get to have other people in my room?” I asked to him.
“I have permitted Geska, Gabby, Alison and Brad to be allowed into your room throughout the day. But at ten o’clock they will have to be escorted to the canteen like the rest of the students” replied Jeff.
I said nothing and just nodded. This is the first time I had heard Jeff talk all profession, I was so used to him speaking normally.
“Good, Charlie I suggest you get going to your room” commented Sir Mallot.
I turned to Geska, “Geska?”
She rushed to me and took my hand. We headed out of the room.
When we entered my room Brad was stood inside. He was sat on the bed inspecting the plasma TV. He did this every time he thought I wasn’t looking.
“Who said you could come in?” I joked.
He turned to me, cheeks bright right with embarrassment of being caught inspecting the TV again. Geska let go of my hand and rushed to him. He lifted her up in his arms.
“You alright Geska?” he asked her.
“I’m fine” she replied as I walked to their side.
He walked to her bed and placed her down. He then rushed to me lifting me up and spinning around.
“Brad!” I screamed laughing.
He placed me down and didn’t waste a second to plant my lips with a kiss. I could feel myself go red as the kiss got more passionate, until Geska made a vomiting noise. We just looked to her and she just burst out laughing. Geska was one of those people who make you laugh when she laughs, so neither of us couldn’t help but let out a little laugh.
“Are you ok?” asked Brad.
“I’m fine” I replied.
“Good, because I have something very special planned for me and you to do tomorrow, to celebrate somebody’s sixteenth birthday” he smiled giving me another kiss.
“If I make it to then” I replied glum, staring down at the floor. I couldn’t help but bring that up. That was all that was on my mind right now. I couldn’t seem to be able to forget it.
“Hey, you’ll be fine. I believe in you. You are an incredible Wiccan” he said kissing my forehead.
The whole day went by so fast it was hard to believe it had happened at all. Typical, when you don’t want time to go quickly it does. Within, what seemed like minutes, it was ten o’clock. Brad and Geska were still in my room but Alison and Gabby had joined us. It seemed strange for us all to be together. There had not been one second since I returned with Geska that all of us had sat in one room altogether apart from Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
There was a knock on the door.
“Oh god” I said as my nerves started to rise.
Brad noticed. He grabbed my shoulders and turned me to face him.
“Listen to me, you will be fine, you are a brilliant Wiccan. You are the best, the funniest, the smartest, the strongest and the prettiest Wiccan I have ever met. You are going to be ok. Ok?” he asked me.
I didn’t reply I just flung my arms around him and dug my face into his shoulder.
There was another knock, a louder knock accompanied by Jeff shouting “Charlie?”
“I’ll get it” Geska shouted rushing to the door.
Brad placed his arms around my waist. I refused to move my face from his shoulder. “Charlie, you’ll be fine” He kissed the side of my head the best he could.
Jeff and Elspeth were stood in the door frame when I finally pulled away from Brad. He smiled to try and get me to smile. A very small smile came on my face for the smallest mille-second. It wasn’t much but it’ll do for him.
“You’ll be great” said Brad as he kissed me one last time. I never wanted this kiss to break. This after all, could be the final one. I need to stop thinking like that. Never the less I never ever wanted him to stop but a clearing of the throat made him pull back.
“Charlie, we need to go” said Jeff.
I lay both my hands on Brad’s Cheeks. I nodded in response to Jeff as I said “Ok” I had said it in less than a whisper but he managed to hear me.
“I love you Brad” I whispered to him kissing him on the cheek.
“I love you Charlie” he whispered back.
I turned to Alison, and hugged her. She knew hardly anything about what could happen. Nobody had bothered in explaining the actual details just the basic facts. I turned to Gabby and hugged her too.
“Thank you Gabby, for everything” I whispered to her.
“I’m not finished yet, we still have another five years as classmates.” She replied, she tried to hide the worry in her voice, just like Mistress Halsente had.
I turned to Geska. I didn’t just hug her I picked her up to hug her.
“You’ll be alright Charlie, won’t you?” she asked me in that three year old voice.
I couldn’t bear to tell her I didn’t know, so I put on my best smile and said “For you I will be”
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
“You’re the best sister ever Charlie” she whispered into my ear.
“Well, you’re the best little sister I could ever ask for” I replied tickling her to make her laugh.
“Charlie” said Jeff suddenly stern.
I nodded in his direction. I placed Geska down on the ground and headed to Jeff.
At the door frame I turned to them and said “Bye guys”
I didn’t get chance to hear their reply, I was whisked away by Jeff and Elspeth.
“Are you alright Charlie? You look a little pale” asked Elspeth.
“No, I’m about to open the box” I replied as we walked down the usual looking corridor – well Swiss Covert usual looking corridor.
“Charlie, we wouldn’t make you do it if we didn’t think you were ready to” commented Jeff.
“I’m not on about that bit, I’m on about the part about Malietta” I replied my nerves peeking.
“She won’t be able to get to you Charlie, that’s a promise” promised Jeff putting his arm around my shoulders and pulling me close.
“Ok, but you have to lick the bottom of your shoe if the promise breaks” I threatened.
“Charlie, you know where the bottom of that shoe has been” moaned Jeff letting me go.
“So you think you’ll break the promise?” I asked him accusingly.
“No... I was just moaning” replied Jeff with an uncomfortably long pause in the middle. That make the hairs on the back of my neck stick up.
We turned down the corridor towards the Grand Hall. As we turned the corner I saw it, at the other end of the corridor. Malietta. Moving in a blur across the space. I was sure of it. I froze at the sight of it. How could she be in already? How could she have gotten in undetected by Jeff.
“What is it?” asked Jeff looking towards the end of the corridor.
“You didn’t see her?” I asked him back shocked.
“See who?” asked Jeff in response, his voice starting to go high.
I gulped and whispered “Malietta”
“Are you sure, Charlie?” asked Elspeth moving in front of me and placing her hands on my shoulders.
I looked her in the eye.
“Positive” I replied nodding.
“I’ll go and check it out” said Elspeth removing her hands and starting to walk.
“No, we need to get Charlie to the grand hall safely. We need to stick together” argued Jeff grabbing her arm and pulling her back.
“But Jeff...” she started but Jeff interrupted “No. We’ll go a different way”
He grabbed my hand and started to pull me back the way we came. One huge bad feeling flooded through my body. Panic. Fear. Worry. Just to mention a few of those feelings mixed together to make one.
Another series of corridors, and then they saw it too. The next corner we turned Malietta hurried past in blur again, at the end of the corridor. As soon as they saw it they froze as I did. Both of them immediately stood in battle position, but there wasn’t even another sound.
“Dad...” I started, in nothing more than a whisper.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me back the way we came.
“We’ll go ever single way if we have to” commented Jeff behind grinding teeth. He was starting to panic. She knew the Covert better then all of us. I had only been here Six months, the same with Jeff and Elspeth had only arrived about a month ago.
We turned another corner and we spotted a set of guards, and fighting with them, Malietta. When she spotted us, she froze, and then stood up straight. The guards were thrown back to us. Jeff and Elspeth helped them to their feet.
“Elspeth, get Charlie out of here. We’ll make sure she doesn’t follow” said Jeff getting into his fighting stance along with the guards.
Malietta did the same adding a little growl.
“Dad...” I started but I was cut short by the growl of Jeff “Go”
Elspeth grabbed my hand and started to run away. I didn’t want to leave him, not now.
“Please be careful” I added as I was pulled around a corner.
Elspeth didn’t want to waste another second, she was running and pulling me along like a dog on a lead. She didn’t stop to ask more guards to go and help Jeff like I suggested but instead kept running.
When we arrived at the grand hall, Elspeth still didn’t let me go. The corridor outside the grand hall was lined with guards stood against the wall, and then peering out of the door were the very worried faces of Sir Mallot and Mistress Halsente. Elspeth didn’t stop running until we were face to face with Sir Mallot and Mistress Halsente.
“Get her inside and lock the door” said Elspeth in a panic “I’m going back to help Jeff”
Sir Mallot and Mistress Halsente didn’t ask any questions they just pulled me into the grand hall and then asked them.
“What happened?” asked Mistress Halsente.
“Malietta... is inside” I said trying to catch my breath. I had never run so far so fast before.
“How?” gasped Mistress Halsente.
“I don’t... know but everyway... we took we bumped into... her” I replied still trying to catch my breath.
“Well your safe in here” replied Sir Mallot “I just hope Jeff is as good a fighter now then what he was when he last visited”
I could listen to that. I didn’t want to hear that at all. I turned to face the rest of the room. It was then I noticed the disappearance of the chairs. And in their place was the box. The dreaded box. The rest of the room was how it always was, an expansive white. I went and sat down behind the box staring at it. Normally when I sit I sit with my legs crossed in front of me. But worry flooded through me, but this time not for me, for Jeff. He could still be fighting against Malietta, or he could be badly hurt, or he could be... No, he wouldn’t be... No. My legs had raised to my chest and my arms had flung around them holding them tight. I
