gave his chin a kiss. I pulled out of his embrace and turned to face him. His dark blue eyes stared down at me in adoration and love. I stroked his cheek before going on my tippy-toes to give him a good morning kiss. We parted seconds later when the sound of gagging reached our ears.
I turned around and found my best friend, Casey, sitting on a bench and acting like she was about throw up. I rolled my eyes at her antics and walked over to sit next to her. โHola, chica.โ She grunted and leaned back on the bench. James sat on the arm of the bench next to me and continued to stroke my head and we waited for the bell to ring.
I was lost in my thoughts when I heard Jamesโs voice. I snapped back tor reality and looked up at him, โWhat did you say?โ He gave me a weird look before repeating what he said.
โI was wondering if you know that kid over there,โ He motioned to the right with his head and I looked around him to see what he was talking about. Sure enough there was a scrawny looking boy standing not far away, just staring at us. He looked like he was sick; his skin was pale, he was too skinny, and his hair was uneven and greasy. I continued to look at him for a moment before leaning back.
I looked up at James and shrugged, โI donโt know him, heโs probably new.โ James nodded before going back to looking at the boy. I gave his back a confused look before looking at my watch. It was already 7:47 and class started at 7:55. I stood up from the bench and grabbed my bag before turning back to my friends, โIโm going to get to class, and Iโll see you guys at lunch.โ
My first class of the day was Mrs. Wilsons Trigonometry. Mrs. Wilson was easy going on the being late to class thing. I walked into classroom, which was decorated with nerdy math posters, three minutes after the bell. I got a few angry glares from the kids in the front row, when I passed them to get to my table, which I had all to myself. Mrs. Wilson had just finished writing the P.O.Dโs on the board when she turned to class.
โGood morning adolescents. I have an announcement,โ my ears perked up to see what she had to say, but she just turned and walked out the door. I just stared at the door for a few seconds then went back to writing down the P.O.D problems. A few minutes after I had finished answering the problems, Mrs. Wilson walked in, with the new kid trailing behind her.
โClass this is Alec Kristoff, he just transferred here from Russia. He will be here until the end of the year. He speaks English, but with a strong accent,โ she turns to Alec. โYou can sit next to Kaylee. Right there,โ she said pointing to my table. I sigh and sink into my chair. Sitting next the new kid is one thing, but when he got closer I realized he was the kid from outside, but when he sat down next to me, I had to squeeze my mouth shut, so I wouldnโt gasp. He was the kid that was staring at me outside. My heart raced and my eyes widened as I turned to listen to Mrs. Wilson explain a trig problem to a girl named Heather in the front of the classroom.
I couldnโt even look at Alec until Mrs. Wilson starting handing out assignments. Closing my eyes and sighing, I turned towards Alec, but he was already zooming through the work. I turned back to my own work and tried to ignore the glances he was throwing me.
I sped right through both sides of the sheets, signed my name Kaylee Reynolds, put the date, walked up to the front of the class, and gave Mrs. Wilson my paper. Passing the front row I got glares of jealousy. I grinned and kept walking. I was almost to my seat when I noticed Alec was staring at me. I nod to him but he doesnโt respond. I sit down, turn to Alec and hold out my hand, โHi, Iโm Kaylee Reynoldsโ; I say politely, he just stared at my hand.
I turned back to my book and started to read but was interrupted when he spoke, โHello.โ He looks at me in a weird way before going back to his work. I looked around the classroom and noticed pretty much the whole classroom was staring at us.
I look at him and ask, โAlec how long are you staying in Battle Lake?โ I was trying to make conversation with him, so I could ask him why he was staring this morning. His face twists into confusion, โMy parents want me to have a full high school experience, so probably the rest of the yearโ, and he turns the spotlight on me. โSo Kaylee, how long have you lived here.โ
I laugh and say โBred, born, raised so all my life. Even my parents were born here, they were high school sweet hearts,โ I furrow my eyebrows and laugh. โSorry to much infoโ.
He gave a small smile before speaking again, โItโs ok, and I like getting to know people; its fun to learn about family history and to learn how your family came to be.โ His smile widened even more and I was starting to feel very awkward.
I gave him an uncomfortable laugh and turned in my seat so I was able to face forward. I was going to read my book but a little โeh hemโ stopped me. I turned back towards Alec and to wait for what he had to stay. He looked sheepish for a moment and then started to talk, โDo you think I would be able to eat lunch with you? I havenโt made many friends yet and it would be good to eat lunch with someone.โ
I nodded and turned back to my book. To everyone else it looked as if I was reading but I was really concentrating on the conversation I just had. He is really strange. I shifted in my seat and knew his eyes were on me. Since we had been in the class it felt as if he was staring at me the whole time.
I glanced up from my book and shifted my eyes over to him. He quickly looked away with a blush staining his cheeks. A shiver ran down my back as a feeling of dread surrounded me. I went back to my book and tried to shake of the bad feeling I was getting. I sat there for what seemed like hours; my eyes staring blankly at the book page and my mind racing, thinking about everything that had happened in the last few days.
I was startled out of my trance when the bell rang. I shook my head and cleared the fog before packing my stuff and heading to gym class. A few people said โHiโ to me in the hallway but all I did was smile and move on down the hallway. I froze right in front of the locker room when I felt a shiver slide down my spine.
