He walked in casually, almost nonchalant about the counseling session. I asked how he was and he responded, “Great, just a little sore from having sex all night long.” I responded, “Interesting, I’m sure your partner feels the same.” He then replied, “Oh, it wasn’t with my partner. We have an open relationship. It was with this fine ass guy I met online last night. I’m not supposed to have guys over our house, so I had to go over to the guy’s place. It’s all good though, I’m used to it.”

I asked if he disclosed his status to his sexual partner. Very quickly he became defensive. “No, I didn’t force him to do anything. He had a choice if he wanted to have sex with me or not. He’s old enough to know better. If he was concerned about catching anything he should have insisted we used condoms. If he caught anything it’s on him.” He didn’t appear to give his actions any reflection and at this point I wasn’t quite sure why he set up the appointment, so I inquired. He answered, “Oh I didn’t make the appointment, my husband made it for me. I didn’t even really know what this was going to be about.”

The situation suddenly became clear to me and so I shook his hand and thanked him for coming in. He asked, “Is that it?” I answered, “Yes. Let your husband know to feel free to contact me if he would like to make an appointment for himself.”
