In 1848, a convention was held at Seneca Falls, New York. The convention was organized by two women: Lucretia Mott, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Most of the people in attendance agreed that women deserved their own political identities. They wrote the Declaration of Sentiments which, like the Declaration of Independence, listed why they deserved better treatment and how they intended to change their rights.

Mott and Stanton continued to have these conventions, which grew every year. Stanton joined Susan B. Anthony to form the National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) in 1869.
The goal of the NWSA was to gain voting rights for women. By 1893, Colorado allowed women to vote in state elections, and more states followed in the next 20 years.

After 72 years, the House of Representatives and the Senate pass the federal womenβs suffrage amendment, which is then sent to the states for ratification. The 19th amendment to the Constitution was passed on August 26, 1920. Women now had an equal vote in elections.
When American men went overseas to fight in World War II, their jobs were left empty. Many women took the menβs places during the war, and some worked in factories to produce the weapons needed to win the war.
After the war, many women left their wartime jobs, but their employment during World War II made it easier for women to be employed later in history.

Susan B. Anthonyβs passion for womenβs rights began when she was not allowed to speak at temperance, or anti-alcohol rallies. Before this, she and her family were active abolitionists.
She campaigned for the employment of women in the teaching profession, and equal education for boys, girls, and children of ex-slaves.
In an 1872 election, Anthony and three of her sisters were arrested for voting. She appeared before every Congress from 1869 to 1906 to ask them to allow women to vote in elections with men.
