Short story

Lucy had always wonder what it would be like to have a friend, someone to do things with over the summer. She was a very lonely child, and never had any friends her own age, that is until a new girl moved into the house next door. Over the next two weeks Lucy and the girl next door, who’s name was Katie became the best of friends. Lucy had only saw Katie’s parents once she thought they were a little scary and they never talked to anyone. Lucy had a doll that looked very much like herself,  Katie asked to take it home for the night.

The next day when Katie brought the doll back it was something of nightmares, the right side of it’s face was melted as if someone had held an open flame to it and the eyes had been carved out. Its body was full of gorges that were colored in red, it was also covered in a bunch of black squiggles that could have been symbols. Yet on top of all that there was a knife through her chest. Katie was crying saying that she woke up and it was like that, Lucy decided to believe her and wrapped the doll up and put it in her closet. In the middle of summer vacation Katie asked Lucy if she wanted to spend the night at her house, over pouring with excitement Lucy ran to her mother and begged her to let her spend the night.

Later that afternoon Katie came home with Lucy in tow. When Katie’s parents saw Lucy come into the house with Katie they smiled but they were sad smiles. At first Lucy thought they were sad that she was there, but then Katie grabbed Lucy’s hand and tugged her down the hall into her room. Katie’s room was very boring, the walls were a tan color and the dresser was black and so was the bed, the only thing with color was the crimson bedspread. Lucy thought the room was more of an adult one than a little girls room, but Katie seemed happy with it so she decided to keep her mouth shut.

Before going to bed Lucy went to get some water and Katie’s mother was in kitchen, at first Lucy was going to turn around but she told herself that she was being silly. After getting water, Lucy turned to say goodnight to Katie’s mother, who’s looked as if she had aged ten years. “Goodnight,” Lucy said and started to head back to Katie’s room, but when she passed by Katie’s mother Lucy heard her whisper “I’m sorry,” but before Lucy could say anything Katie’s mother left.

Sometime during the night Lucy heard someone moving around, but she figured it was just Katie going to the bathroom and fell back into a foggy sleep. The next time Lucy woke it was to the burning sensation in her arm, she opened her eyes expecting it to be pitch black, but to her surprise the room was lit with what seemed to be a million tiny candles all in a circle surrounding the bed. About the same time she registered the candlelight she also found out that her hands were tied to the bedpost, same with her feet. The burning in Lucy’s arm increased, she looked down to see that she had two shallow cuts on her right arm and there standing by her right side was Katie.

“What are you doing?” Lucy asked confused .

“Oh, nothing just a new game!” Katie said cheerfully as if nothing was wrong.

“Why am I tied up if it’s a game?” Lucy questioned slightly worried.

“It’s a special game!” Katie said.

“I want to go home,” Lucy stated

“Oh, but you can’t,” Katie’s said, but it didn’t sound like Katie there was a deeper darker quality to her voice.

“I want to home!” Lucy repeated louder than the first time. Lucy started to struggle against the rope that bound her to the bed. Try as she might Lucy could not get the ropes off, the longer she struggled to more her her wrist and ankles burned.

After what seemed to Lucy like hours she stopped trying to get the ropes off, looking down at her wrist she saw that they were bleeding. The skin around her wrist and ankles was now jagged and the rope was resting deep into her skin.

“Are you done?” Katie asked.

Turning her head Lucy saw that in Katie’s place was the most scream worthy thing ever, there stood a thing with black eye’s, whose mouth was full of sharp pointy teeth. Her head was full of snakes that were hissing, among the snakes she had sprouted two horns. Katie’s skin was now looked bloodless and her veins were visible and covered her body like intricate black and blue mazes, in place of her nails were sharp claws, two of which were dripping with blood. Lucy let out a blood curdling scream, but it went unanswered.

“They won’t come,” The creature that was once Katie informed Lucy. Lucy  stopped screaming.

“Wh-wha-what aa-arr-are y-you?” Lucy stuttered in fear, failing to keep her voice steady tears poured down her face.

“You are such a stupid human! You know nothing!” said Katie, who was no longer Katie.

“I child am Herzle the Demon of Demons!” proclaimed the demon and with that said held his hand out and a flame appeared.

“Should I make your death quick or slow and painful, oh I would show you only the most extreme torture! Let’s do that! Oh, yes I like that idea!”  he said in an excited voice. Lucy in a last resort pleaded with the demon.

“Let me go, pl-please, yo-you're my best friend! P-please!”

“I see you agree with me, slow and painful it is!” was Herzle response and without a pause blew on the hand supporting the flame. Before Lucy could even react the flame hit the right side of her face. Lucy could feel and smell her skin burning off she screamed until the pain was too great to even think. The fire could not be put out it, slowly the right side of her face burned down to the bone. Soon the pain faded and Lucy was shocked to see that she was still alive.

“H-h-ho-” Lucy started to ask.

“Are you not dead? Oh well you won’t die until I rip your soul out of you body so that I can consume your life-force,” he explained offhandedly.

“No m-more.” Lucy pleaded to Herzle.

“Oh I have much more for you! But since I’m feeling so giddy I’ll do you a favor and make this easier on you,” Herzle said in return to Lucy’s plead.

“Thank yo-” Lucy had started to say, but Herzle leaped onto her and extended his claws rammed them deep into Lucy’s eye sockets and gouged out her eye’s. Now instead of tears running down her face it was blood, crimson blood, Lucy’s blood.

“Now you won’t have to see any of it!” Herzle said as if he had done her a wonderful favor instead of gouging out her eyes. Then without warning he swiped his claws across her arms and left deep cuts, that started to bleed profusely. This action was repeated until not a part of her was without pain, Lucy could feel the blood draining from her body. Still she did not die, all Lucy wanted to do was die, die and feel no more pain.

“Oh I’m starting to get hungry, Boo I really do like to play with my food longer,” Herzle said and pulled out a knife unlike any from this world.

“Kill me,” Lucy begged.

Taking the knife Herzle started to carve into Lucy’s skin and bones. The carving’s burned and turned black, by the time he was done every square inch of Lucy’s body was covered in different symbols, even her tongue. Lucy had one last thought before Herzle plunged the knife towards her heart.

“God, please take my soul,”

Herzle should have felt a wave of power fill him, but he felt nothing. He let out an inhuman scream and slammed his hands down on the bed.

So weak was he from using all his energy, he pulled back and let Katie take over. As Katie came to herself she remembered nothing, but as she looked at the bed a single tear dropped from her face. Katie had hoped he would let Lucy live, because out of all the other girls before, Lucy was and forever will be her only best friend.
