In the beginning.

Every one wondered how the world would end. But December came and went the movie 2012 was laughed at more than when it was released and thrown in to bargain basement bins everywhere better as a coaster than entertainment thats what i use my copy for i wonder if that women is still waiting at the top of the mountain in France for the alien spaceship to take her away the only reason the men in white coats havnt taken her away is because they cant be arse to walk up the montain. But life carried on as normal I cant wait to tell my kids if i have any how i survived 2012 bird flu and swine flu load of shit ha it was media sensationalism and hype like that that led to our current problem that started 8 hours ago this is how the world ends.
I woke up late as usual staying up watching tv that i had no interest in. 25mins to get dressed and get to the bus stop for the staff bus that ferrys staff from site to site. I threw my clothes on and walked to the bathroom spent 5mins fighting my hair to stay down or in some kind of semblence of style i gave up winked at the mirror just a weird habit i have. I work in a hospital nothing fancy im just the cleaner but it pays my bills just about. the walk was the usual uneveentful freezing cold rainy misery you would expect from south east England in January but at least short enough not to be soaked to the bone but long enough for a smoke. After stepping in sick from the night befores drunks swearing and putting out my fag i crossed the road seeing the staff bus already waiting. I used to walk the two or so miles to the hospital but that got old real fast when the rain of summer ended and the freezing rain of winter began. I got on the bus the driver completely blanking me as usual i made my way through the narrow aisle looking at the still half asleep faces of the 7.30 Monday mornig shift I sat in my usual spot at the back on the left always the same spot thats the thing about commuters always stiicking with the same old seats and spots i plugged my headphones in to my phone and dozed in my seat the scenery passing by my blank gaze.
The bus pulled up outside the hospital main entrance and the passengers slowly disembarked in one slow line ambling forward. The revolving door was still acting up stll stopping halfway through is rotation keeping you out in the cold for a bit longer like it had some personal disstain for you. I walked through the lobby already starting to bustle with people who had gotten here far to early for there morning appointments and could now enjoy a two hour wait staring at a screen that would tell them they would have to wait an extra hour on top of that because some one was late or sick hospital staff are always hypocondriacs oh well at least they could have a disgusting sandwhich from the shop both disgusting in price and taste.
I headed down ignoring the lift aking the stairs down two flights swiping my card signed in and walked off with out a word to anyone I already knew my ward for the day same as every oher day for the last 3 months not that i minded I had worked with this group for a while now they knew me i knew them they were a good group. I took the lift this time sod doing 4 flights of stairs at this time of the morning headed past the maternity ward swiped my dam card again headed down the corridor to my area for the day after a brief argument with the card scanner which seemed to not want to read my card mainly because i was trying to swipe my atm card i should realy use my wallet i walked through. My ward is basicaly 3 corridors in a Y shape 10 rooms 5 on each side a nurses station on the base part of the Y and the other 2 parts having 10 rooms and nurses station on each side and to the left a large waiting room where there was rarely anyone waiting mainly due to the fact there was another entrance there which had a swipe card reader so no members of the public could get in unless they pushed the buzzer and waited 10mins for someone to respond and let them in. I muttered good morning to the nurses who were just getting there updates on patients from the night shift and headed straight on to my walk in cupboard. I Spent some time fighting the cleaning trolley out of it some one had somehow managed to wedge it behind a stack of paper towels i pulled it out and walked in took of my bag and coat threw them on top of the cupboards and popped open a can of irn bru i was realy starting to get addicted to that stuff. After 15 mins I realised I was on my own for the day or at least until half 11 when the nex shift would be on 4 hours on my own God I love Mondays.
After a fun hour and a half of scrubbing toilets and emptying bins the volunteer pushing the trolley with the newspapers came round i got a paper and a redbull he didnt stock irn bru i retreated to my cupboard downed the rest of my irn bru and started on the red bull browsing the paper. Gun control controversy why do Americans need an automatic weapon your not John Wayne and this is not the wild west. Taxes. Jimmy Saville god will that ever end. The door opened it was Jade the nurses aide she was short black hair pale face reasonably good looking she smiled "Patients going home room for you to clean oh give us some" she grabs my redbull and takes a swig "Morning Ringo your welcome by the way" "Fuck off" She replied laughing. "Which room?" "Number 22 just do a normal clean nothing fancy could you start it now A and E have a patient they eant up here quickly" "The fun never stops does it" i muttered she smiled and left I looked back at the paper sports would have to i wait.
A patien always leaves something behind when there discharged from hospital socks a coat choclate a pair of false teeth once this time it was an old leather bound Bible Mrs H Collins written on the inside page loveFrank kiss kiss. I put i in my pocket it obviously had emotional value and I didnt want to put it out where odds were i would end up spilling cleaning fluid on it. This room was a little different from the others it was on the op lef of the Y of the ward and was an Isolation room all though I had never seen it used as anything other than just a genral patient room it had 2 entrances a plain simple pine door that lead directly in to the room and another pine door that lead into a small room with a table and sink before another door lead in to the room. The room had a vent and a pressure monitor i had no idea how it worked just if you didnt close the the door properly after 5mins it would star beeping madly driving you insane til you closed it and hit the silence button. After mopping the floor i told Jade it was all done and went back to the cupboard and caught a glimpse of the new patient coming in. He was in his 50's a little heay thining grey hair big red nose sweating profusley but pale as hell the guy looked like death. I wasnt to concerened about the mask this ward was a respiratory ward all the staff knew wha they were doing they were dedicated and they cared if he could get better we would make it happen I let the cupboard door close behind me and went back to the sports secton.

In The End

I was halfway through the Man utd match report in the paper when the alarm went off I wandered out of the cupboard to see every nurse and Doctor run off to the isolation room I never understood what every one needed to go there are other patients you know. Two nurses pulled the crash cart in to the isolation room and the door slammed shut behind them. I sighed and looked at the time 9'oclock still an hour before break I grabbed the cleaning trolley and went to clean a patients room. I was watching the news while cleaning the room some new version of flu was going round London I wonder what animal they would name it after this time bear flu has a nice ring to it. The lady in this room seemed to be in a coma or something either way it was my pick for what to watch on TV I switched channels and put on the Jeremy Kyle show its like watching monkeys at the zoo. I saw the nurses walking out of the ISO room the man had died.
After my 10'o clock cigarette break I headed back in to the ward through the waiting area why did they have to make the smoking area so far away? The first thing I noticed was the shouting I looked down the corridor there were 5 or6 members of staff crowded around the isolation room there faces shocked out of curiosity I wandered other expecting it to be a relative causing a scene again. As I got to the door I was shocked to see 2 members of security pinning the patient who had passed away just over an hour ago the ground. For such an old man he was putting up one hell of a fight. A doctor a young guy in his twenties white shirt red trousers god knows why he was wearing red trousers moved closer to the man and attempted to calm him down saying he was in shock and that they were here to help. The patient responded by yanking free of the security guard and biting a chunk out of his hand the young Doc howled in pain and backed off as the guards them selves struggled to hold the man. It happened so quick the guard holding the man down on the lefts hand slipped the patient responds launching himself at the throat of the guard on the right he does not have time to cry out as what ever this thing is tears his wind pipe out. Chaos ensues
