When to Replace a Furnace

One of the easiest way to know when to replace your furnace is when our bills starting going up and yet we do not use our hating system much. Our furnaces are our out of sight out of mind appliances that we have in the home, as most are suck in our basements and we do not really think of them much. So now the energy bill has grabbed our attention we need consider what to do next.

1. Probably the first question we can ask ourselves is the age of the furnace, older units still work but over time there efficiency goes down over time. That is why you may have noticed our energy bills rising over the years. New latest models of furnaces work at around 97% efficiency where as your old furnace maybe work at 65% or less.

2. Next you need see how safe your furnace is, you will need to conduct regular safety inspections and checks, looking for tell tail signs of leaking and corrosion of the heat exchange.

3. Another factor that is not directly linked to your furnace is the rising cost of the fuel your furnace uses. Most fuels will raise but some rise faster than others, for example oil is becoming more difficult to buy and cost raises. Compare that to gas which is widely available source of fuel and runs at around 80% efficiency or higher.
