You Can Call Me Bambi

Four o’clocks are not just for the afternoon anymore, they're delicious for breakfast. I must say they are much tastier than those nasty geraniums that Pops planted in front of the house. I'll just save those for hard times when I can't find any other flowers. That hydrangea tree growing out front is right tasty too. I wonder why it only got a couple of blooms on it this year? But then Pops ain't the best gardener in the world.

I always have my morning meal here, its peaceful and quiet like an empty cathedral. My stained glass windows are the multicolored flowers and shrubs that flourish here. A delight for the eye as well as the tummy. This morning I have plenty of time to munch and meditate. The old man never gets up until well past 8:00 a.m. I'll have high tailed it back to the park before he ever glances out his window.

Sometimes I get tickled at the old fart. For instance, today he's parked his car between the house and the next door neighbor's fence. Oh Pl-ease!.... Does he think I can't squeeze by and get into the backyard? Besides, that tropical hibiscus bush by the patio is one of my favorite munchies. It was a good 4 foot tall when he set it out, but now a days I bet it's not even twelve inches. Every day I have to bend down farther and farther just to get a little taste. Like I said, Pops gardening skills leave a lot to be desired.

Well now, wait just a doggone minute. What's that over by the fence? I'll be! it's a new bird feeder on one of those silly shepherd's staffs that folks usually hang flowers on. Leave it to Pops to think up a new use for the thing. Let me walk over and do some investigation work. It might just contain something good to munch on. Pops sure has a lot of nerve feeding these pesky birds and not even thinking about me. Why doesn't he set me out an ear or two of corn once and a while? Besides, everyone knows that a deer is a lot cuter than these ugly fluttering finches. I can't remember how many times I've been mistaken for the famous movie star Bambi. And we all know how handsome he is.

β€œShew birds,” get out of my way. How do you get into this darn thing? There's a little tray at the bottom maybe I can lick it. Mmmn, these seeds are pretty tasty, but they're kinda hard. If I could just get my tongue inside. β€œOuch,” that thing hit me on the head. It's swinging back and forth like a metronome. I'll get it yet..... CRASH! Whoa, I hit the jackpot. Look at the seed all over the the ground. I knew I could outsmart a dumb bird-feeder. Wait, let me check around, Pops may have heard the crash. The side door looks like it is still closed and the shades are shut. Ah, the coast is clear; he's probably sleeping as sound as a baby doe. Ah, my little seeds, come to Daddy.

Now that was a tasty breakfast. Uh oh, I feel the call of Mother Nature. This always happens right after I eat. I'll just step behind this puny hibiscus bush. I'm sure Pops won't mind, anyway, a deer does like his privacy, don't ya know.

It's time I get out of here and mosey along to the park. My morning scavenger hunt has certainly been fun. I can't wait to tell my friends about it. Maybe I can talk a couple of them into coming with me tomorrow. I really enjoy visiting Pops yard better than any other house on this street. And you know what, he probably looks forward to my visits. Pops is an old retiree and he lives here all alone. My morning visits are in all likelihood the highlight of his day. Ah shucks, I bet he'd never admit it.

Don't you worry old man, I'll be back tomorrow!
