By definition ethics are a set of principles of right conduct. These principles can be based on how you are raised, what you learn in school, how your treated by your peers, or by your culture. Many people influence your ethics. These people can be your friends, teachers, religious figures, or family members. My ethics are simply based on how people treat me, how I treat people, and how I want to be treated by my family members, friends, and acquaintances. These ethics are honesty, loyalty, commitment, to be faithful, and to never judge a book by its cover.
I also think that ethics go hand and hand with values. Values are important and enduring beliefs or ideals about whatโ€™s good and what isnโ€™t. This is one way your ethics can be shaped. Most of the time, your ethics are based on your values. Values are usually differing within culture, which is why culture can make your ethics.
I value honesty in a lot of people. Of course, not everyone is honest 100% of the time and thatโ€™s okay. I understand because I too am not always 100% honest 100% of the time, even though I know I should be. I look up to people who are always honest, even when itโ€™ll get them in trouble. I try to be honest will my friends, family, and people I donโ€™t even know that well. Honesty plays a big part in our life and even if telling the truth gets you in trouble sometimes, it benefits you in the long run.
Loyalty is something that should always take place in friendship and any other relationship. Family or not loyalty is a great thing that every relationship needs. Loyalty is the measure of commitment you have for a person. You should always commit to everything.
Whether itโ€™s committing to a friendship, relationship, or if itโ€™s committing to a goal in life, commitment and loyalty are very important things to have.
Being faithful to something or someone is another ethic I have. To be faithful is to have belief and trust in something or someone. I have a lot of faith in people, even when they arenโ€™t someone you can really trust or believe. I believe that when you have faith in someone that isnโ€™t trustworthy, they will see that you honestly think that they will do no bad to you, and eventually they will be affected by that and wonโ€™t do bad. Faith can affect a lot of things. I like to surround myself with very optimistic people, and most of the time, these people have faith and if someone doesnโ€™t have faith or if someone canโ€™t be trusted, I try to change that because everyone in life should have a chance to be positively affected in life and have a positive attitude.
I very much dislike when people are judged by their looks. One of my ethics is to not judge a book by its cover. In other words, I donโ€™t want to make a judgment on someone because they look a little different or they arenโ€™t up to peopleโ€™s appearance standards. Iโ€™d rather get to know a person, become their friend, and really understand them before I try to make a miss leading judgment on them. Theyโ€™re some many people in this world that are great people, but donโ€™t get the time of day because of the color of their skin, how much money they have, or what theyโ€™re overall appearance is. I was always made fun of because of my looks, but when people looked past that and got to know the real me, they became my friend. I intend to do the same with everyone I meet.
I think all my ethics tie into each other as you can see by their definitions. I always try to follow these few simple codes of conduct in life and hope to carry on these ethics throughout my life. With just a little faith, loyalty, honesty, and lack of bad judgment, we can all be better people. I hope reading this will not only get you thinking about how you act and treat people, but how you can better your act and better the way you treat people. Thereโ€™s always room for improvement and no one in this world is perfect.
