...

"Please, I'm begging you, don't do it...I...I don't even know you, please! I promise, I won't tell anybody, just...just let me..."

"LIAR! You know exactly who I am!"

     "No. I swear...please, just-"

It was a silent May night; a gentle breeze with a hidden icy touch, the aroma of freshly cut grass in the air. The gunshots ringing through the night; breaking what seemed like an endless silence. A man brutally murdered in the peace of this night. But why, for what reason, what did he ever do? These are questions anybody would ask, but only myself to find out the horrifying, sadistic truth about it all.

...

     "Croffin, get over here!"

"What is it Marx, I was just about to-"

"The Boss wants us to work on a case; it's sounding pretty serious."

"Damn." I mumble. "It's always serious Marx, that's the job."

"Yeah, yeah I know. Let's go."

"Coffee first. No way I'll be able to focus without it." I wish mornings weren't so miserable. It's not like much goes on anyways, everybody is still sleeping. Sure, get the head-start on things, but when the action usually tends to happen at night, (in this line of work) well... it's night, time for sleep. Walking to the stations coffee area, I start to pour myself a cup, the steam rolling in on itself like a wave, then escaping out the top. Lifting the cup to my face I can feel the warmth of the still escaping steam along with the distinct robust smell of black coffee. It's a silent bliss.

"Just saying, but personally, I don't know how you can drink that stuff straight." Harmlessly pointing palm upwards at my coffee, he scrunches his nose and turns around to get his morning starter; a blueberry muffin, and a cup with a 75/25 sugar to coffee ratio.

"Let's go the the Boss's office, get the information on the case."

"No need, I already did that just before you got here. Besides, I think she's in a meeting right now. Besides, we should get going, I'll drive." Tossing Marx the keys we head out the door, down the stairs in front of the police station. Being late May the weather is slowly starting to get warmer, on the edge of comfortable and goosebumps; a gentle breeze putting it over that sensitive edge. Getting in the passenger side of the car, I wait for Marx to start the car so I can put the heat on low, silently cursing myself for wearing a white short-sleeve. I should watch the morning weather more.

"Aaallrighty." says Marx finally entering the car and starting the engine. "Let's get going, it's about a 15 minute drive from here." Marx is pretty new here, only been on the job for a week. Technically a few days, he supposedly had the flu pretty bad when he was supposed to start. The Boss called to inform me last night that I would be getting a partner the next day; this being my first time seeing him. Also said he transferred from down-state, so at least he has some experience. So far he's rubbing off as assertive, or maybe bold, it's probably just my attitude. Other than that, he's a taller man, my guess would be 6"1, dark skin, and bald. By choice I presume, since he's fairly young it seems, maybe even about my age.

"Alright, well, what's the case. Let's get to it." Passing me the file, I start to skim through it. "Names Alex Bane Tiel, he was in his mid-twenties before he passed. Wasn't in a current relationship, has lived here his whole life on the Western side. The boring details being he was 5"5, short brown hair, and glasses. And just as well no criminal records." I don't know why, but his face looks familiar; must've passed him on the street during one of my walks before.

"Well, I certainly don't see why anybody would want to kill him. I tell ya, there are some psychos out there for sure. Anymore details about the murder Croffin?"

"Ahm, yeah, just a sec. Three bullets in his chest, found by a woman named Naomi Helk. She says she found him dead on the side of the street during her daily morning jog. Nothing more than that, no witnesses, fingerprints, nada."

"Looks like we've got our work cut out for us."

"Yeah, sure." Just then my phone starts ringing, the Boss.

...

"So, what was that call about?" Marx questions.

"It was the Boss." I sigh, "She already has a couple of detectives out there. Dammit Croffin, why didn't you know this."

"Heh... guess we should've waited until she was done with that meeting eh." Feeling stressed out I start to rub my temples.

"I'm perfectly fine to do this on my own, I need to work." I mumble to myself.

     "What was that?"

"What..huh..oh. Nothing. Boss wants to to take it easy after everything, says I need to take a break." Air quoting those last three words.

     "Well, what happened."

     "I'm fine, it's nothing."

     "Are you sur-"

"I'm fine!" I snap. Marx turns his attention back to driving and I start to rub my temples again. "Ah, I'm sorry, it's just-" Marx cuts me off by holding up his hand.

"Nope. If you don't want to tell me I'm perfectly fine with that. You don't really know me, I don't really know you. Why don't we get some breakfast..huh. Straight black coffee can't be THAT satisfying now can it?"

"Uh, yeah, sure." Maybe I misjudged him, "Uhm, there's this good place like 10 minutes away, 'Mike's Diner'. On the Corner of Chesnut and Maine."

     "Perfect."

...

We find a seat by the window sitting in our booth. A waitress comes up and hands us our menus and silverware bundled in a napkin.

"Hi, what can I get you two gentlemen to drink today?"

"Yes please, I'd like an apple juice." Marx starts off, the waitress turns to me.

"Uh, yeah, I'll take a blac-," Marx eyes me, "an apple juice. Thank You."

"Be right back with those." She smiles and walks off with her high blonde ponytail swaying halfway down her back. 'So happy', I think. I suppose it's her job though, it's not like she can go around asking people to hurry up so she can finish her shift. Everybody has their hidden stories though, you can never truly know what's behind those hidden smiles.

(Hope you like it so far :/ :)) (I'll write more soon, stuck on a part of the next part if that makes sense :s)
