The End of the World?
It started out a normal Monday morning for Sam. He woke up, rolled off his bed and padded into the bathroom to do his usual routine. But something felt different about today, yet he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was exactly.
As he stood in front of the toilet he began to think ' man the floor sure seems unusually cold right now.' Then out loud, although nobody could hear him he said,β Maybe, its cause I don't have socks on.β He shook himself off, jumped in the shower, hoping this would help get him warmed up.
β Ah, this feels good,β Sam exclaimed. He was getting warm finally, but his feet still felt cold on the shower floor. He rubbed soap on them, not just clean them, but to see if it he just had bad circulation. After a few minutes they began to feel better, again Sam exclaimed loudly, β oh yeah this is much better!β He washed his hair quickly, and after washing his body got out of the shower.
He grabbed a towel went to his bedroom and dried off. Then went to his closet to pick out some clothes for the day. Some tan slacks, a striped pullover sweater and a blue oxford shirt, then went to his dresser to get some boxers and socks. He grabbed his thick wool socks, and said, β These should keep my feet warm!β
But still in the back of his mind he had an eerie feeling of doom.
As he put his socks on, he shook his head. Trying to dismiss the eerie chill he kept on feeling. He finished getting ready for another boring work day. He loved his job at the television station, but it was just the people around him. They were so dull and boring, never smiling or laughing. At times he swore they were 'zombies', just walking around like mindless people. As Sam walked down the street he could still feel the coldness going threw his socks and shoes, then slowly seeping to his feet. It was obvious the wool socks hadn't helped any.
He stopped a young lady, and asked, β Excuse me, but could you tell me something?β
The woman looked at Sam strangely, then said, β I guess so.β
Sam continued, β I know this is going to sound strange, but do your feet feel cold?β
The woman look down at her feet, she was wearing pantyhose and high heels. She replied, β well come to think of it they are colder than usual. I just figured it was from wearing the pantyhose and heels. I have a job interview this morning.β
β Oh good,β Sam exclaimed.
β Why do you say that? It's not like I don't have a job already!,β the woman said defensively.
β Sorry, sorry,β Sam said blushing. He continued saying, β I just thought I was going crazy with this cold feet thing,β with a sorry look on his face.
The woman was just about to say something, when a large piece of the ground crumbled before them. They both looked in a state of shock. A gentleman walked up, saying, β not again.....not another sink hole!β Sam peered over at him quickly saying β Another......... this happened before..... where..... when?β
Sam paused as he looked back at the sinkhole, it seemed to be getting larger. Then he looked back at the man and asked, β Has your feet felt unusually cold today?β
The man looked surprised at what Sam just asked, then said, β Yeah... come to think of it they have. Do you think it has something to do with these holes? I've seen three or four just today! What is happening to the city?β
Sam said β I don't know for sure, but when I get to the television station I'm going to find out if this is happening in any other place. You two should be careful where ever you go....... I have an eerie feeling about this..... I think it's the end of the world!β
The three looked down the street and saw more parts begin crumbling away. Sam turned and quickly headed for the television station. As he entered the building he yelled β where's Josh...... who knows where Josh is at?β
β JOSH...... where in the hell are you?β Sam exclaimed out loud.
Just then Josh came around the corner β hey Sam what's up with all this yelling? Whats got you so excited about?
Sam began to yell, β Excitement..... excitement, I'll tell you what this is all about! Josh huge parts of the earth are crumbling away. I don't mean like small pot holes........ these are huge..... enormous chunks of the street! Gone, literally gone. Haven't you seen anything happening outside or do you have your damn head stuck to your computer again? Go out... go outside and see for yourself!I'm going up to check the AP wire to see if this is happening anywhere else.β
Josh didn't believe Sam, but to appease him he walked outside. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, so he began to walk back in the building. Just then he heard a loud crunching noise, as he turned back around he saw the corner building disappear! Josh's eyes got big and all he could do was say β Oh my God!β
Down the street another one went crumbling. Josh was in shock, he wanted to move but couldn't. Just then Sam grabbed him by the arm and said, β come on Josh, come quick I have something to show you!β
Sam had to literally drag Josh back inside, and up to the AP room. They had a set of monitors on the wall, for viewing different parts of the world. β Pay attention to this Josh, you aren't going to believe this. Look Josh...... parts of the globe are gone, just disappeared from sight! Sam exclaimed.
There was nothing anyone could do, no reporter, no scientist, not even world rulers could stop this phenomenon from happening......... it was truly the end of the world!
