The First of a Two-Part Adventure

CHAPTER ONE

In a slate-gray downpour, battered by savage gusts of wind warring under a dark sky, five determined figures paused outside a dilapidated building. Sheets of rain teemed down darkened windows; cracked, concrete graffiti-laden walls were lashed by the storm; and a single heavy-duty entrance door was set behind a thick steel gate. Piles of trash by the door were turning to mush.

Guy Bodie sent a watchful gaze to both ends of the narrow alley, although in this weather he could barely see twenty yards.

โ€œWeโ€™re all good.โ€ Cassidy Colemanโ€™s American accent was faint under the non-stop thudding of the hammering rain.

Bodie turned his face to the gate, exposed to the concealed mini-camera nestled in its darkest corner. Twenty seconds passed. Now they had stopped running, Bodie felt his wet clothes sticking to his skin, the cold trickles running down his back, the hot sweat lashed away by driving rain. On sparing a glance for the others, he almost smiled.

They werenโ€™t dressed for bad weather. Cassidyโ€™s luxurious deep-red hair was plastered across her shoulders. Her drenched T-shirt stuck to her pronounced biceps, but her wary, trained eyes never ceased checking their perimeter. Jemma usually wore her dark hair in a bun and tonight was no exception, but the weather had demolished it. She was shivering and staring back at Bodie as if he were to blame for the tempestuous conditions across London.

โ€œAt least look on the bright side,โ€ Bodie said. โ€œThe cops and local American agencies couldnโ€™t catch a rampaging rhino in this weather.โ€

Cassidy turned to stare at him. โ€œA rampaging rhino?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re in London,โ€ Bodie stated as if that explained it. โ€œBloody hell, donโ€™t any of you remember Only Fools and Horses?โ€

Nobody answered, either because they couldnโ€™t remember the comedy sitcom or were too demoralized to speak up.

He glanced up at the camera once more before checking on Yasmine and Lucie. The Moroccan was standing upright, blowing running water from the end of her nose as if sheโ€™d learned a new trick. Lucie was glaring at everyone in turn, probably ready to launch into a lecture about the health hazards posed by walking unprotected in a storm.

The conspicuous absentee was Heidi Moneymaker.

Bodie put that thorny issue aside, feeling a stab of impatience. The rain wasnโ€™t letting up; in fact, the deluge was getting worse. And, despite his words, they were exposed to more than the elements out here, even if they were halfway down a narrow alley. All it would take was one wandering cop or a nosey neighbor to report them.

Another fifteen seconds passed. Bodie wondered if they should leave, but the steel gate clicked and nudged open. Without waiting, he grabbed hold of the bars, pushed and went through. The heavyweight door on the other side also clicked open.

Thankfully, the relic hunters entered a warm but narrow corridor, shedding water in puddles.
