death warmed over, while the rest of the family at least looks like theyโ€™re enjoying the good food the kitchen has to offer. Mindy goes in, giving her grandmother a kiss on the cheek, then her mom.

โ€œYโ€™all look good this morning,โ€ Mary Jo says, her eyes sparkling as she takes us in. โ€œYou certainly got up on the right side of the bed this morning.โ€

She most certainly did. On my side.

โ€œThank you!โ€ Mindy chirps, and I feel a tremor inside. โ€œYou look good too, Mom. Everyoneโ€™s looking happy this morning. Except Uncle Charles, but at least you got some early morning swag going on with that getup.โ€

Rita gives her niece a look. โ€œSwag? You are blind, girl. More like sag.โ€

I nudge Mindy a little. I told her to act normal, not try to distract by overcompensating.

Thankfully, Mindy takes my nudge and shuts up, still smiling. โ€œYou sure are happy this morning,โ€ Roxy remarks. โ€œYou guys must have really rocked the boat last night. Nice job, Captain Oliver. Iโ€™m so jealous. Iโ€™m about to go down to the beach and find me a nice cabana boy.โ€

I love how this family just rolls with all of Roxyโ€™s antics, paying her no mind. I guess after both Mindy and Roxy, theyโ€™re used to it. Johnโ€™s certainly adapted quickly.

โ€œHey, Oliver, letโ€™s make sure Mary Joโ€™s got us cleared for free time,โ€ John says from the front of the table. โ€œIโ€™d love to give you more rides in my pride and joy. My Honeyโ€™s to-do list is longer than what I get some days at the office.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not that bad,โ€ Mary Jo says. โ€œIโ€™m just . . .โ€

Suddenly, Mary Jo stops mid-sentence and glances around. โ€œWhereโ€™s Bertha?โ€

โ€œHopefully, stuck on a beach raft and floating away in the ocean,โ€ Ivy Jo mutters.

โ€œI gave her to Mindy and Oliver last night so she could sleep with them,โ€ Roxy says, looking over at us.

Mindy glances at me, but Iโ€™m already on it.

โ€œWe let her out in the middle of the night. She was clawing at the door and whining,โ€ I say smoothly.

โ€œWell then, where is she?โ€ Mary Jo asks, worried. โ€œShe never misses breakfast.โ€

โ€œCalm down, Mary Jo,โ€ John says. โ€œSheโ€™s probably just playing in the garden like she did when she got out over St. Paddyโ€™s Day, remember?โ€

She ignores him. โ€œBertha!โ€ she calls, โ€œWhere are you, honey?โ€

โ€œAct normal,โ€ I whisper in Mindyโ€™s ear. I can see the nervousness on her face. โ€œMary Jo, Mindy and I will find her after breakfast. Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m sure sheโ€™s around here somewhere.โ€

It settles her enough, and we finish our breakfast in peace. After weโ€™re done, Mindy and I go to our room, trying not to practically run. Berthaโ€™s still there, her tail flapping around. Thatโ€™s a good sign at least.

Mindy picks her up and tries to cover her with a blanket, but Bertha hates it and squirms so much that Iโ€™m worried sheโ€™ll raise a fuss if we insist. Finally, I grab a towel and throw it over my shoulder, taking Bertha and holding her in my arms so that the towel lies over her and mostly obscures her.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ I say. โ€œYou take the lead.โ€

I feel fucking ridiculous trying to sneak out of the house with a little dog. But still, this shit is funny, and I canโ€™t help it, I start humming the Mission: Impossible theme under my breath as we make our way down the stairs. Weโ€™re clear all the way to the back lawn when Roxyโ€™s suddenly on our ass.

โ€œHey guys! You guys . . .โ€

I try to hide Bertha, but the dog lets out a little bark, alerting Roxy, and she stops, smiling for a moment before giving us a suspicious look. โ€œBertha! Mom has been looking all over for her.โ€

โ€œWe found her. Taking her for a walk,โ€ Mindy says, hoping to end the conversation.

โ€œCan I come?โ€ Roxy asks excitedly, seeming to ignore the fact that Iโ€™m carrying Bertha.

โ€œUh . . . no,โ€ Mindy says, giving me a desperate glance.

Roxy scowls. โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecause weโ€™d like a little couple time to ourselves,โ€ I say with a fake embarrassed chuckle. โ€œA nice walk with our little friend here.โ€

Roxy can't come up with a reason to argue. โ€œWell, give me her if youโ€™re so intent on being with each other. Iโ€™ll take her to Mom and you two can go get your outdoor freak on.โ€

Mindy glances at me, at a loss for words. I think quickly and shake my head. โ€œActually, Rox, I told your mom Iโ€™d find her. I could use the rub on my rep.โ€

Roxy gives me a grin and a nod. โ€œOkay, okay. Buttering up to Mom some, huh? I donโ€™t think you need it, but whatever. Have at it.โ€

Roxy goes inside, and Mindy shakes her head when sheโ€™s gone. โ€œWhy couldnโ€™t she have just listened to me from the get go?โ€

โ€œLittle sisters never listen to big sisters. And what can I say? I have that charm the ladies love.โ€

I expect some sort of rebuttal but she lowers her lashes. Her reply is almost too soft to be heard. โ€œYes, you do.โ€

We walk down to the beach, and as soon as weโ€™re out of sight of the house, I squat down, setting Bertha down. She walks around, sniffing everything, but definitely not interested in pooping yet.

โ€œFuck me,โ€ Mindy groans, then laughs at her words. โ€œNo matter what Roxy said, thatโ€™s not an invitation. Not yet.โ€

โ€œLater,โ€ I remind her, and we start walking. โ€œSo, Mindy Price, tell me about yourself. I mean, beyond what I know.โ€

โ€œIf you tell me about you,โ€ she says, looking so sexy in her sundress that I forget for a moment the reason weโ€™re down here. โ€œWhat do you want to know?โ€

โ€œFair,โ€ I reply, grinning. โ€œSo . . . first kiss. How old were you?โ€

โ€œEighteen,โ€ Mindy says, and I stop, gawking.

โ€œWhat, did they send you to an all-girlsโ€™ school or something?โ€ I ask, trying to imagine how a girl as beautiful as Mindy Price got all the way to eighteen without even kissing
