wondering if we were gonna have to send out the Baywatch crew.โ€ She pauses, then looks back and forth between the two of us before grinning, reading our expressions. โ€œWhat did you do, ride a surfboard?โ€

โ€œNo, I got eaten by a shark,โ€ I joke. โ€œWhatโ€™s it to you?โ€

Roxy waves it off, chuckling. โ€œI just wondered. You said you were going on a walk.โ€

Oliver chuckles. โ€œWe just walked down to the dunes and watched the waves a little. It was gorgeous.โ€

Roxy rolls her eyes. She knows we had enough time to walk halfway to the next town if weโ€™d wanted. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m glad you two lovebirds had fun. But Mom wants to see you.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ I ask.

โ€œShe wants help with stuff. I donโ€™t know. Decorations, I think, and they have to go up this afternoon and evening. You know how she isโ€”everything needs to be her way, and she refuses to hire it out. I know she wants Oliver to help move that big ass sound system.โ€

โ€œEasy enough,โ€ Oliver says. โ€œIโ€™ll handle it so John and Charles donโ€™t have to.โ€

Roxy shakes her head. โ€œGood. Because let me tell you, they probably wonโ€™t be much help. I love them both, but those two geezers canโ€™t do much heavy lifting.โ€

I have to laugh. Sheโ€™s rude but sheโ€™s right. โ€œRoxy!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ she asks innocently. โ€œIโ€™m just sayinโ€™.โ€

Inside, Mom is happy to see us and gives Bertha a gigantic cuddle. โ€œThere you two are! Weโ€™re preparing to go to the reception hall. Weโ€™ve got staff moving stuff there but still need some help.โ€ Bertha squirms in Momโ€™s arms, turning to lick her face, and I have to snicker as Bertha gets a noseful of foundation. Mom doesnโ€™t seem to mind. โ€œI was so worried about you, snookums!โ€

โ€œLord have mercy, I was hoping that rat catcher was gonna stay gone,โ€ Grandma mutters, sitting in a chair and fanning herself. โ€œMost peaceful couple of hours my whole visit.โ€

โ€œQuiet, Momma,โ€ Mom says, setting Bertha down, where she immediately begins hopping around like her normal self. โ€œAll right, let's get going. Oliver, John and Charles are waiting for you in the garage.โ€

Everyone starts filing out of the room. When itโ€™s just the two of us, Oliver turns to me. โ€œI really enjoyed this morning,โ€ he says softly.

โ€œBesides the dog poop investigation, I did too,โ€ I say before I give him a smirk. โ€œYou really ought to be careful where you plant your seed.โ€

He laughs. โ€œI know the best place to plant it next time.โ€

A flush burns my cheeks, remembering the unbridled passion on the beach and the way we seem to crash like the waves themselves. He grabs me and pulls me in, giving me a kiss that leaves me wanting more. โ€œSee you at the reception hall,โ€ Oliver says.

Outside, I get in the SUV with Sam, the driver, behind the wheel. All the women are in it, and Roxyโ€™s already called shotgun. โ€œLetโ€™s roll, Sam!โ€

โ€œSo whatโ€™s this place like again, Mom? I know you told me about it over the phone, but I forget the details,โ€ I say, turning to her. Sheโ€™s behind me with Grandma.

โ€œYouโ€™ll love it. Itโ€™s not that far, only about five miles away. Itโ€™s on the beach in a little cove,โ€ Mom says. โ€œYouโ€™re really going to love it.โ€

When we arrive at the hall twenty minutes later, it doesnโ€™t disappoint. The outside is amazing, a beautiful giant adobe, almost Caribbean-style structure sitting just on the edge of the sand. The inside of the hall is gorgeous with huge windows along the eastern wall that give a breathtaking view of the ocean. This place looks like something out of a fairytale wedding . . . but thatโ€™s what Momโ€™s getting.

โ€œIโ€™m speechless,โ€ I breathe as I look around the inside. โ€œForget the reception. Iโ€™d love to have my wedding in some place like this.โ€

โ€œAll right, ladies, letโ€™s get to work!โ€ Mom says. โ€œLots to do, and not a lot of time to do it in!โ€

Roxy and I are given the task of hanging up some electric lights shrouded in lace, and we get to work with the ladder. As we get the strands tacked, Roxy chuckles. โ€œYou know, you and Oli should use this place. You guys are just so beautiful together.โ€

โ€œYou think?โ€ I ask, my heart aching. Before, I could easily lie, say he was just a bastard who has a hot body, but now, the truth hurts. Heโ€™s a sham of a fiancรฉ, but heโ€™s got everything Iโ€™ve ever dreamed of a man having. Face itโ€”heโ€™s a catch.

My cell buzzes in my purse, saving the day. I pull it out. Itโ€™s Brianna. โ€œHey, Rox, can you handle this for a few yourself? Itโ€™s my bestie.โ€

Roxy glares at me, a thumbtack in her mouth. โ€œHurry!โ€

โ€œHow you doing, girl?โ€ Brianna asks as soon as I pick up the line, and I feel a grin start before my worries start up again. Brianna knows what this all is. Maybe she can help.

โ€œGood. I guess.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? You sound down,โ€ Brianna says, and I hesitate. I donโ€™t know if I should tell her the truth. โ€œCome on, Min, I know you well enough even over the phone. Arenโ€™t you having fun?โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m having fun,โ€ I admit. โ€œAll I can handle.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s Oliver been?โ€ Brianna asks. โ€œBehaving?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I say with a little chuckle. โ€œBut good. Very good.โ€

โ€œI know that tone, Mindy. Something you need to tell me?โ€

โ€œWell . . .โ€ I say, wondering how much I should tell Brianna. โ€œAt what point did you start thinking you had feelings for Gavin?โ€

โ€œOh, itโ€™s that sort of problems,โ€ Brianna says. โ€œWell, to let you know, I think it was about three seconds after I saw him the first time.โ€

โ€œCome on, Iโ€™m serious!โ€ I protest. โ€œWhen?โ€

Briannaโ€™s voice grows somber, and I can imagine that intense look on her face that she has when sheโ€™s worried about me. โ€œMindy, it doesnโ€™t really matter. It happened. So whatโ€™s the problem?โ€

โ€œYou know this isnโ€™t . . .โ€ I start before lowering my voice. โ€œYou know this isnโ€™t supposed to
