βDoes this have anything to do with what Dominic said last semester?β I ask, my mind wheeling through a tornado of thoughts.
Wade drops his hands and his eyebrows turn up in the middle. βDominic?β
βYou know, the guy who keyed my car? When we were at the Bourbon Room he said something about how you shouldnβt be here, tooβ¦β My eyes widen and I cover my mouth. βOh, God. You donβt think itβs him, do you?β
βWell, if it is, heβs gonna wish heβd chosen a different pastime,β Wade says, clenching his fists.
Standing up, I close my laptop. βGuess itβs a good thing I still have my coat on. Come on, letβs go.β
Bewilderment flashes through Wadeβs features. βGo? Go where?β
βWeβre going to resolve this right now. Weβre going to Dominicβs.β
I donβt wait for a response. Instead, I walk straight out the door and down the hallway. If Dominic is a part of this, so help me, Iβll hurt him. I just donβt understand why heβd have it in for Wade. Or why heβd want him out of town. None of this is making any sense. But one thingβs for sureβif itβs him, weβre going to get it out of him and tell him where to shove it.
Wade follows on my heels, but picks up speed so he can walk beside me. βWhat exactly are we going to say to him? Shouldnβt we think this through a little bit before we go marching over there?β
βNo, I think we need to nail him down before he has any time to come up with excuses or alibis,β I say, shooting Wade a sideways glance as I fling open the front door.
Wade grabs hold of my right wrist, spinning me around to face him. βWe need to be careful. What is this Dominic guy capable of? What powers does he have? I mean, he said something about being able to hear my thoughts that dayββ
βYeah, heβs a psychic,β I say, pressing my lips into a thin line. Suddenly, the idea doesnβt seem like the best of choices. What if he can read what happened between me and Colton last semester? Would he be willing to spill it if he picks up on it?
βOkay, is that all?β Wade says, narrowing his eyes.
I blink away the thoughts and shrug. βI think so? Honestly, I donβt really know a lot about him. I donβt overly pay attention to what other people are doing. Iβm so wrapped up in my own chaos, you know?β
Wade sighs, running his hand over his lips. βOkay, thatβs okay. At least that helps me to understand where he might be coming from.β
βGood, then letβs do this,β I say, leaning forward and giving him a kiss on his cheek. βWeβll get this sorted out.β
βYeah, okay. But remember, we gotta be careful. If the revenant escapedββ
I bound down the front steps before he has time to finish his sentence, racing over to Blue. I canβt live my life in fear, locked away in the manor. But at the same time, Iβm not about to linger out in the open, either. Just in case.
Without another word, Wade gets into the passenger seat and buckles in. When I put the vehicle into drive, the wheels spin on the slushy driveway as I pull around the loop faster than I probably should. Wade doesnβt say a word, though. Instead, he sits with his arms crossed over his body and his eyebrows practically creating a crater on his forehead. Both of us eye the sides of the road as if something could jump out at any moment.
βItβs not far. He just lives down the road,β I say, cutting through the thick silence.
βGood. I donβt know how much suspense I can handle in one day,β Wade whispers.
I reach out, tugging at his sleeve, hoping heβll release his hand from his arm. He turns to look at me and I hold my hand out, trying to shoot him a sincere smile. βEverything will be okay. Youβre not going anywhere. I refuse to let you.β
Wade snickers, but reaches for my hand, sliding his palm against mine. βYeah, well, at this point, I donβt know that itβs up to us. I mean, hell, itβs like the entire universe really doesnβt want me here.β
βWell, thatβs a bit dramatic,β I say, snickering under my breath.
Wade glances down to his knees and says sarcastically, βBut is it though?β Turning his head, he looks out the window.
βIs there something youβre not telling me?β I ask. βIs there anyone else that doesnβt want you here?β
Taking a deep breath, Wade bites down on the side of his cheek.
βWade?β I press.
βI donβt know. Maybe?β he finally says.
My eyes widen as I flip the turn signal to turn down Dominicβs drive. βMaybe? You donβt know?β
βNo, I donβt. I mean, I donβt think theyβd have enough pull to do something like this.β
βWho?β I say, putting the vehicle into park in front of Dominicβs large, white manor.
Wadeβs tongue skirts across his lower lips and he tips his head to the house. βLetβs check this first. Like you said, we donβt want to eliminate the element of surprise. Come on.β
This time, itβs Wade who makes a quick exit, leaving me scrambling after him.
Before we even make it to the door, Dominic steps outside. His white-blond hair and outfit are disheveled, like he just crawled out of bed.
βDominic, weββ I begin, but he raises a hand, cutting me off.
βAutumn, between the two of you, there is no need to even open your mouth. God, I could hear you coming a mile away. Literally,β he says, taking a deep breath and rolling his eyes.
βIβm sorry, are we interrupting your sleep time?β Wade says, his jaw hardening as he steps into Dominicβs space.
Domβs light eyebrow arches high. He presses all five fingertips in his right hand against Wadeβs chest, gently pushing him back a step. βActually, youβre just lucky I put clothes back on. I was a bitβ¦β he looks over his shoulder,
