βStop playing games with us. If you can hear our thoughts, you know why weβre here. What do you know?β Wade growls, his silver eyes darkening as his eyebrows press down.
βAll Iβm saying is you need to get laid.β
Wade steps forward, grabbing Dominic by the front of his shirt, lifting him up to his tiptoes. βAnswer the goddamn question.β
Dominic clutches at Wadeβs hands as he struggles to maintain his own balance.
βWade,β I warn, placing my hands on his left arm.
Refusing to look at me, the lines on his jaw harden, but he lets Dom drop back to his own footing.
βIt wasnβt me. Whatever it is thatβs got your tidy whities in a twist, it wasnβt me. Like I said, I was a bit busy with Natasha,β he says, shifting his gaze from Wade to me and back again.
βProve it,β Wade says, his expression hardening. He releases his grip on Dominicβs shirt, thrusting him back a bit.
βHow? Bring her out here in her birthday suit? Iβm sure thatβll go down well withββ he points a finger my direction.
βDonβt care. Prove to me youβre not a lying weasel,β Wade says through clenched teeth. βMy life is on the line here and I donβt take it lightly.β
Dominic rolls his eyes and sighs. βSo dramatic.β
Wade reaches out for Dominic, who sidesteps his clutches.
βFine, fine,β Dom says, straightening his shirt and glancing my direction. His gaze turns from a passing look to one of concentration. After a moment his eyebrows tighten and his jaw slacks open. βYou have a what in your boathouse?β
βItβs not a what,β Wade says. βItβs a who. Now, get the girl.β
βGod, all right. Come on,β Dominic says, shooting me another surprised look before opening the door and letting us inside. βSheβs not going to like this.β
βI couldnβt honestly care less,β Wade says, his voice low.
Dominic leads us through a large entryway by the standard of any normal house, but itβs still about half the size of the one at my house. The inside isnβt at all what I expected. Rather than being immaculate, like the way he typically dresses for school, there are aspects of the home that look like they need some extensive work done. While the house is spacious and has some beautiful elements to the internal architecture, like intricate crown molding and woodwork, itβs as though its been left to its own devices for far too long. Parts of the plaster on the walls is discoloring or flaking off, especially in the high parts of the ceilings.
Dominic shoots me a sideways glance and I swear his face flushes. But he remains silent as he walks up the large flight of stairs to the right, and takes a quick turn, following the upper landing around to the left.
βHey, babeβitβs me. Can you make sure youβre covered up?β Dominic says, peering through the doorway as he opens it a crack.
Thereβs a shuffle inside, but a womanβs voice filters out into the hallway. βWhatβs going on, Dom? Everything okay?β
Dominic nods his head, opening the door enough so we can see inside. βYeah, I just gottaββ
Wade steps forward, pushing his way past Dominic. Surprised by his forcefulness, I follow after him, stopping just inside the door. A blond girl Iβve never seen before sits in the middle of a large four-poster bed, clutching red satin sheets to her chest. Her eyes are the size of big blue pools as she looks from us back to Dominic.
βSatisfied?β Dominic hisses, stepping back out into the hallway and flagging us to come out.
Wade shoots an apologetic glance at the woman, βS-sorry to bother you.β He diverts his eyes and walks out the way he came.
I turn to the woman and wave awkwardly. βSorry for the interruption.β
She blinks wildly but doesnβt say a word.
Following after both of the guys, I make sure to close the door on my way out.
βWell, that was an experience,β I say, lifting my eyebrows and crossing my arms.
βNow, if you donβt mind, Iβd love for the two of you to get the hell out of my house,β Dominic says, stepping aside and pointing at the stairs.
Wade hangs his head in defeat, but only gets a few steps before he turns back to Dominic. βIf itβs not you, then who the hell is doing this? Youβre psychic, right? Can you help us?β
βMy abilities donβt work like that, man. Itβs not a magic trick, for fucksake. Ask Autumn. I donβt always get all the information,β Dominic says, jabbing a thumb my direction.
Wade looks my direction, but I hold both hands up. βDonβt bring me into this. I barely know how my powers work.β
βCan you try?β Wade pleads. βSomeone is raising the dead and now theyβre threatening me.β
βLook, Iβll see what I can do. But not now,β Dominic says, placing a hand on his door handle. βI have company.β
βI donβt have much time,β Wade begins.
Dominic opens the door to his bedroom and takes a step inside. βKinda not my problem.β Without another word, he closes the door.
βDammit,β Wade curses under his breath, glancing in my direction. βSorry about all of this, Autumn. After what you said, I was so sureβ¦β
I shake my head, reaching for his hand. βNo, itβs my fault. Iβm the one who brought up Dominic. Come on, letβs get out of here. We need to come up with another plan.β
Wadeβs lips press into a thin line and he nods.
Without another word, I walk for the stairs, refusing to let go of Wadeβs hand. Together we exit Dominicβs house, stepping down the icy steps and onto the driveway. The driveway, I now notice, has barely been snowplowed. Wade hops into the passenger seat and slams the door.
Lowering my head in defeat, I walk around to the driverβs side. When I reach the door, I glance back at Dominicβs house.
If itβs not him, then who?
Sighing to myself, I open the driverβs side door and slide inside. βSo, what next? What do we do?β
