He closed his eyes and waited for death, unable to move or speak.
A stroke. It must be a stroke.
But even with his eyes closed, he could see colorβand not just any color, but bright red. The red turned a dark crimson, and then a manβs blood-curling screams assaulted him. He slapped his hands over his ears and fell into a black hole of horror, losing track of time and pleading for death to release him from the abyss.
His entire body broke out in a profuse sweat. The screams grew louder, and then, as suddenly as they started, they stoppedβand left his skin burning as if heβd walked through fire.
Iβve arrived in hell.
βDr. Fraser! Are you ill?β
No, Iβm dead.
Fingers pressed against his neck, but he couldnβt talk. His mouth wouldnβt work, so he couldnβt tell the man he was dead so there was no point in checking for a pulse.
βDr. Fraser!β
The voice penetrated the bleakness, forcing him to reconsider his condition.
βWhatβs wrong, Dr. Fraser? Is it your heart?β
Not my heart.
βIβm going for help.β
Elliott grabbed the long-fingered hand and used it as a lifeline to pull himself back to the world of consciousness. Then he slowly opened his eyes, blinking against the bright sunlight.
βPaul? Is that ye, lad?β
βYes, sir. Let me get Emily. Youβre not well.β
βShe canβt help me.β Elliott made a move to stand, suddenly aware that he wasnβt experiencing his imminent death but his sonβs. Paul tried to restrain him, but Elliott pushed the constraining arms away.
βBe still,β Paul said. βLet me get Emily just to check you out.β
Elliott didnβt want to waste another minute. He didnβt need a doctor. He needed to see his son. Now! βWhereβs James Cullen?β he growled.
βHeβs at a cabin not far from here with a big brute of a man with an ax.β
βErik? Heβs with Erik?β That made no sense. James Cullen was supposed to find Ensley and come here or stay in the Dakotas until Tavis arrived.
But heβs here? Why was Paul sent to get me? Why didnβt James Cullen come alone to talk to me so we could work out our differences?
βYes,β Paul said. βErik wants you to come to the cabin immediately.β
βWhat does James Cullen want?β
βIβm not sure. Weβll find out when we get there. Iβll get a wagon for us.β
Elliott grabbed Paulβs jacket lapel, remembering the terror he just experienced. βWait. Is James Cullen alive? Tell me!β
βErik wouldnβt let me see him, but he wouldnβt be in such a hurry to see you if JC wasβ¦was gone.β
Elliott waved his hand toward the barn. βDamn the wagon. Get me a horse.β
βElliott!β A man was running toward them, yelling, βWhatβs wrong?β
Paul recognized him from the family portraits hanging on the mansionβs stairwell wall. βYouβre Mr. MacKlenna.β
βAye.β He squatted to be eye level with Elliott. βWhat happened? Is it yer heart?β
βI found him like this,β Paul said.
Sean looked up at Paul. βWho are ye?β
βHeβs a liar. Thatβs who he is,β Elliottβs voice was hard and cold as stone. βGet me a horse!β
Sean pressed his hand on Elliottβs shoulder to keep him from standing.
Why is everybody trying to restrain me? Donβt they understand James Cullen is dying?
βBest ye donβt need to ride right now. Let me help ye inside. Emily can examine ye,β Sean said.
βNo! Enough!β Elliott shook off Seanβs hand. βErik has my son at the cabin.β
βErik? The Viking?β
βAye,β Elliott said. βHe wants me there. Itβs an emergency.β
βI donβt know about the Viking part,β Paul told Sean, βbut thereβs a man at the cabin who insists on seeing you, Dr. Fraser, and Emily Duffy.β
βMe? He wants me there? Why?β
βDamn it, Sean.β His complacency infuriated Elliott more. βWeβre not going to learn anything until we get there.β
βOnly if Emily says itβs safe,β Sean said. βYe donβt look well, Elliott.β
βIβm not ill. My son is. Help me to my feetβor get out of my way, and Iβll manage by myself.β
Sean and Paul helped him stand, then Elliott sprang forward as though a tether had snapped, and he shoved them away. βIβm going now! Donβt try to stop me.β
Sean yelled at a groom coming out of the stallion barn. βJackson, saddle three horses.β
βYes, sir,β the groom said, darting back inside.
Elliott strode in the direction of the cabin.
βIβll walk with Dr. Fraser,β Paul said. βWill you get Emily? And tell her not to mention this to Meredith.β
βWho are ye, again?β
βIβm Paul Brodie. I watched JC disappear in the fog and lied to Dr. Fraser about JCβs disappearance. Then I used the brooch to go after him. I just now arrived and was on my way here when I met Erik. He has JC at the cabin, but he wouldnβt let me go inside to see him. Please hurry up and get Emily and meet us there.β
βGo on, lad. Iβll bring Emily and the horses. Stay on the path so I can find ye.β
βDonβt tell Meredith,β Paul reminded him.
βIβll do what I can.β
βIf yeβre coming with me, Paul, donβt stand there. Take my arm.β
Paul hooked his hand in the bend of Elliottβs elbow and forced him to slow down, which irritated Elliott, but right now, he might not get there without Paulβs assistance. The horrifying experience had left him weak and unsure of his footing, and if he continued to argue with Paul, the lad might leave him here and return to the cabin by himself.
βTake it easy, will you? Dr. Mallory would be furious with you right now.β
βI dinna care.β Elliott knew that was a lie as soon as the excuse rolled off his tongue. Charlotte wouldnβt even try to understand but would lasso him into submission, just like she did whenever he was sick, even with a goddamn cold.
βWhyβd ye lie to me, Paul?β
Paul steadied him as he shuffled down a slight incline. βI believed it was my duty to protect JCβs secret. I didnβt know the whole family knew about the brooch and disappearing into a fog. I thought it was part of
