But, these playoffs were different! Really differentâat least, in 1942! Jason had never remembered the old man advising himâof any of those facts! There wereâin the early-fortiesâthree playoffs series! Not the ânormalâ twoâwhich had been the case, till the league had expanded (had gone from 6 teams to 12), in 1967!
The first two seriesâof these surprising playoffsâhad the winner prevailing in best-two-out-of-three games, The Stanley Cup Finals, however, were still comprisedâof the ânormalâ best-four-of-seven!
Thank God something is normal!
The Wings would vie with the Canadiens, in the initial series. Beginning March 22nd.
Our Heroâs âGrand Planââvis-a-vis Mr. Stackhouseâcould not have begun, any later than it hadâdue to the fact that the âcampaignâ was to revolve, almost entirely, around the playoffs! Big time!
To âkick offâ his nefarious âprogramâ, Our Boy had sought out Hurley Stackhouseâand offered a $10.00 bet, on the Wings! This was for the seasonâs finaleâon the 19thâvs. the Chicago Blackhawks. A wagerâwhich Jason won!
Heâd been tempted to call Valerieâon his new phoneâand invite her to attend the game with him! But, heâd refrainedâknowing, full well, that heâd be too pooped, to devote any energy, to the endeavor! (Friday was coming, after all!)
Stackhouse paid his âDebt of Honorââwillingly! Almost happily! Then, condescended to accept another $10.00 bet, on the opening playoff game! To be played, on Sundayâversus the Montreal Canadiens!
Jason did his best to secure a pair of tickets, to the contest. No luck. Heâd believed the âhockey industryâ to be ânot all that popularâ in the early-forties! The Red Wings games were not even broadcast, on radio, that year. He was halfway shocked, to learn, of the multitude of Detroitersârabid Wings fansâforming lines, outside Olympiaâs box office! And this was taking placeâon the afternoon, and evening, before!
Instead, the couple had dinner at The Blue Ribbonâaccompanied by Jasonâs high hopes, that the couple wouldâve blundered upon the Piepczyk familyâs âregularâ Sunday night dinner! Didnât happen! At least. it didnât appear to have taken place! Actually, who could tell? Given the factâthat Our Boy didnât really know, exactly, what heâd be looking for! Not exactly! Well, heâd consoled himself, Valerie would knowâand, presumably, recognizeâthem! Advise himâof their presence! No luck!
The couple wound up making their way to The Great Lakes theaterâwhere they were able to take in an absolutely wonderful movie: Random Harvestâone of Grandma Piepczykâs all-time favorites! The flick had starred Ronald Coleman and Greer Garson.
Jason was positive that his fiancĂ©e had enjoyed the classic flick! Probably much more, than wouldâve been the caseâhad they actually wound up, at The Olympia. (Despite the fact that the home team had eked out a 2-1 victoryâover the Canadiens.)
The following day, Hurley Stackhouseâs path did not cross Jasonâsâtill 3:30PM. Was the âGreat Manâ trying to ignore him? After losing two, in a row? Would âtwenty lousy bucksâ have made that big a disasterâfor Stackhouse (and his âorganizationâ)? Obviously not! For the enigmatic man did show up, andâagain, almost gleefullyâheâd paid Our Hero! Then, he went on, to accept another âten-spotâ wagerâfor Game 2, of the series, to be played Tuesday night, in Quebec!
This time, Jason lost! The Canadiens prevailedâby a score of 5-0! A shutoutâfor, soon-to-be-released, Goalie Paul Bebaulte!
On Wednesday, Stackhouse was even laterâin seeking out our beloved loser! But, he did appearâand seemed somewhat relieved, when Jason paid him the ten-spot! Another bet was confirmedâfor Thursday night! It would be the seriesâ deciding gameâand would be played, in Detroit!
Huzzah! The home team won! Fairly easily! By a 6-2 score! The Wings would advanceâto another best-of-three series! Against the Boston Bruins! Mr. Stackhouse showed up early Friday morningâand laid Jasonâs winnings, on him! Again, with much exterior enthusiasm!
The series opener, versus Boston, would take place, on SundayâMarch 29th! In Boston! Another ten-dollar arrangement, was entered into! The Wings would get offâon âthe right footâ! Detroit 6-Boston 4!
The two parties, to the wager, would meet, on Monday morningâand the finances were promptly settled! Game 2 would be playedâat The Olympiaâon Tuesday night! The, by-now-traditional, ten-dollar arrangement was, once again, agreed to!
As it happened, SundayâMarch 29thâturned out to be not devoted to hockeyâplayoff game or not! Nothing close!
On the preceding Wednesday night, Jason had been invited to that little whiteâthat wonderful whiteâhouse, on Sussex! Eric had informed himâthat morningâthat heâd been ordered âto not take ânoâ for an answerâ. Susan would expect their former boarded, for dinner! A sure-fire âbanquetââthe likes of which Our Hero had (obviously) missed! Badly!
While passionately partaking, of the opulent, did-not-disappoint, feast, his hostess âkind of unloadedâ on him!
âFirst off,â sheâd begun, âwhen are we . . . going to get the chance? The opportunity⊠to meet this fabulous Miss Valerie?â
âUh⊠well, soon! I didnât know⊠that you guys, would be that interested,â
For the first timeâthat he was aware ofâhis former landlady had become upset, with Our Boy! Sheâd been seated, across the table from him. Butâthough heâd been unable, to see the gestureâhe was certain, that sheâd had her hands, on her hips! Had kept them thereâfor the duration, of this, out-of-the-blue, âconfrontationâ! Another first! At least the initial time sheâd directed the suspected gestureâat him! As much as heâd ever been aware, of such things!
âJason!â sheâd exclaimed. âJason, Honey! Jason⊠I think youâre allowing yourself, to become a little bit selfish!â
That shot-across-his-bow shocked the guest! Especially comingâas it didâfrom his absolutely-favorite person, on earth!
âMe?â heâd gulped. âMe? Selfish? Iâm being selfish?â
âYes,â she responded. âThis girl⊠Valerie! You take her out⊠how often? Once or twice a week? How chivalrous!â
âSusie! I work! I do! I work⊠hard! Ask Eric!â
The latter appeared to wantâbig timeâto be left out, of the conversation.
âI realize that,â responded Susan! âBut, does it always have to be about you? Another thing⊠and this is even more important⊠where do you take her? To a stupid hockey game? To a lot . . . of stupid hockey games?â She was clearly upset, with him. âHas it ever occurred to you⊠that she might not
