โI donโt know who she was,โ said Karen, โbut it certainly wasnโt Neilโs mother.โ
โMmm,โ said Walter. โIt wasnโt Neil either. Interesting. About the same age as Neil. He doesnโt have a sister, does he?โ
โNot that we know of.โ
โCome on, letโs go and pay our respects.โ
They jumped from the car and crossed the road and in the next second Walter was buzzing the intercom.
A woman answered, a foreign lady, by the sound of things.
โHello, who there?โ
โInspector Walter Darriteau, Chester Police, to see Mrs Swaythling.โ
โHold on. I check.โ
They seemed to wait an age. Then the lady was back, โYou come in now.โ
The gates swung back open and they walked through to the front door and pressed the bell.
โSome house,โ said Karen.
โIโve seen better,โ said Walter, as the front door pulled open. A slight young woman in a white blouse and black skirt smiled politely and said, โPlease come in. They will see you in a moment.โ
Filipina, Walter guessed, housekeeper by the look of her, about thirty, quite attractive, wondered if she was legal.
โI tell them you are here,โ she said, and smiled and disappeared down a white marble floored corridor. Then she was back. โThey see you now. Please follow,โ and they followed her along the same corridor that opened out to the left into the largest living room either of them had ever seen.
Mrs Swaythling was sitting in a winged back chair. She didnโt look well. Grey hair, drawn face, very slight. Gerry was standing behind her, hands on her shoulders. Mrs Swaythling tried a smile.
โThis is my wife,โ he said, โHolly.โ
โForgive me if I donโt get up.โ
โOf course,โ said Walter, striding toward her, taking her delicate hand and gently squeezing it. โPleased to meet you. Iโm Inspector Walter Darriteau and this is Sergeant Karen Greenwood.โ
The two women exchanged glances and half smiles as Karen wandered toward the open window. It was floor to ceiling glass and had been swept fully back open, as if some giant had removed the whole wall.
โMind if I have a look?โ she asked.
โBe my guest,โ said Gerry, leaving his wifeโs side and crossing the room and beckoning her out onto the terrace.
โWow,โ she said, โsome view.โ
Far below on the river were a pair of rowing eights, chasing one another, and a couple of packed pleasure cruisers astern, working late and busy, and beyond that, the water meadows where beasts grazed contentedly, as the river wound away upstream, the setting sun lighting it up like liquid gold.
โWhat a view,โ she repeated.
โWe like it,โ said Gerry, looking into her eyes.
โDo take a seat, Inspector,โ said Mrs Swaythling, and Walter slouched into one of the vast cream sofas.
โHow are you?โ he asked.
She pulled a face, didnโt say anything, then she said, โGood days, bad days,โ as the other two came back inside, Gerry returning to his station behind his wife, Karen perching on the end of the sofa beside Walter.
โWe want to talk to you about Neil.โ
โOf course you do,โ said Holly. โGerry said someone tried to kill him.โ
โYes, they did. Why do you think they did that?โ
โI have no idea.โ
โI told you that,โ said Gerry, taking a moment to admire the seated sergeant.
โHe has a lady friend, I believe,โ suggested Walter.
โThat bitch!โ Holly Swaythling said.
โVeronica?โ said Karen.
Holly sighed and nodded. โVeronica Camberwell. Should be ashamed of herself, corrupting a young man half her age.โ
Neilโs words came back to Karen.
Iโve had dozens of girls, maybe hundreds.
Corrupted, he wasnโt.
โWhere does she live?โ asked Walter.
โUp at Willaston, big ugly house it is, built in the 1800โs, must cost a fortune in upkeep,โ said Gerry.
โNeil says that you have threatened to cut off his inheritance,โ said Karen, watching their faces closely for a response. She certainly got one.
โDid he?โ shouted Gerry. โDamned cheek!โ
โThe stupid boy!โ said Holly.
โAnd did you?โ asked Walter.
โWe might have mentioned something,โ said Gerry.
โOnly in jest,โ added Holly, โmore in an effort to bring him to his senses.โ
โDo you have children, Inspector?โ asked Gerry.
โNot that I know of,โ said Walter.
โWell if you did, you might understand,โ said Holly.
โCould Veronica Camberwell have anything to do with this attempt on Neilโs life?โ asked Karen.
Gerry pursed his lips, pretended to think.
Holly said, โWho knows? Someone must have done it. Nothing would surprise me.โ
โYou see,โ said Walter, โthere has been another development.โ
โWhat kind of development?โ snapped Gerry.
โA very big development,โ said Karen, looking straight into Gerryโs eyes.
Eight
โWell?โ said Gerry, unaccustomed to being kept waiting. โWhat kind of development?โ
โThere has been another attempt on Neilโs life.โ
Hollyโs mouth fell open. She balled her fist around the handkerchief and glanced around at her husband, then back at the police people.
โWhere, when?โ asked Gerry.
โIs he all right?โ asked Holly.
โHeโs fine,โ smiled Karen, โwe persuaded him to wear a bulletproof vest. It did the business.โ
โOh my God!โ she said, close to tears.
โWhere is he now?โ asked Gerry.
โHeโs in a safe place. Heโs going to stay there until we get to the bottom of this.โ
โI demand to know where my son is being held!โ yelled Gerry.
โNeil wanted it this way,โ said Karen. โHe said no one was to know, not even you.โ
โThe fewer people that know the better,โ said Walter.
โBut that shouldnโt include us,โ said Holly.
โFor the moment it includes everyone,โ said Walter.
โRidiculous!โ snapped Gerry.
โThe thing is,โ said Walter, โwe were wondering if you can think of anyone who might want to hurt Neil?โ
โWeโve already told you the answer to that,โ said Gerry.
Holly didnโt say a word; just turned and looked up at her husband.
โYes, you did tell us that,โ said Karen, โbut we need more to go on. We canโt find the culprit until we know the motive.โ
โIf we knew that weโd tell you,โ said Gerry, growing increasingly irritated.
โHave you got any enemies?โ asked Walter.
โNO!โ he answered, too quickly for the officersโ liking.
โTell me how it happened,โ said Holly.
โThe latest shooting?โ said Karen.
Holly nodded and sniffed into the embroidery.
Karen glanced at Walter, who said, โEarlier
