βOh my God,β wept Holly.
βYou are upsetting my wife!β said Gerry.
βItβs all right,β she said, glancing up at him again. βWe need to know whatβs happened; we need to help if we can.β
βHave either of you seen this man before?β
They both stared at the picture and shook their heads.
βNeil says itβs a very close likeness,β said Karen. βAre you certain?β
βCourse we are!β
βAnd Neil doesnβt know him either?β asked Holly.
βHe says not.β
βThis is drugs related, Iβll bet!β said Gerry.
βNeil doesnβt do drugs!β said Holly. βYou know that.β
βHe insists heβs not into drugs,β added Karen.
βThatβs what I said!β said Holly.
Neilβs mother gazed down at the picture of the neat young man staring back.
βWhy are you doing this?β she whispered. βYou evil, evil boy.β
βThere is something else you need to know,β said Walter.
βGo on!β said Gerry.
βWe have agreed with Neil that the press release will say that he was killed in the shooting.β
βWhat! Oh no!β grimaced Holly.
βThat way we believe the killer will think he has done what he set out to do,β said Walter.
βSeems sensible to me,β said Gerry.
βBut...β said Holly.
Walter interrupted her. βPeople are bound to ring you up for news. We donβt want you to tell them he is alive and well.β
βWhy ever not?β asked Holly, nearing the end of her tether.
Gerry answered the question. βBecause the police believe that it might alert the killer, and he might try all over again.β
βCorrect,β said Walter.
βBut our friends wouldnβt do anything like that!β she insisted.
βWe donβt know that,β said Gerry. βNot for certain.β
βAnd you promise me he is quite well?β said Holly, turning back to Walter.
βOf course,β said Karen, βheβs fine, you can talk to him later on the phone.β
Walter clarified. βHe is a bit shaken up, anyone would be, badly bruised, and Iβm sure heβll feel rotten for a few days, but heβs been to hospital for a complete checkup and they donβt need to keep him in. Thatβs the main thing.β
Holly smiled nervously at the thought.
In the next instant they all became aware of phones ringing through the house. The Filipina came running, βSorry to bother, but I getting calls, say Neil dead, what I say?β
Walter shared a look with Gerry. He nodded briskly and said, βIβll take the calls, Hilario, put them through to me.β
βThank you,β said Walter, nodding, βAnd donβt forget, if you can think of anything, no matter how small, please ring me at any time, and he reached forward and set a fresh card down on the light oak coffee table.
βThank you, Inspector,β she said, βnow if you donβt mind I am very tired,β and she closed her eyes and settled back into the winged back chair.
The meeting was over.
Gerry came back to the hall as they were on the way out.
βCondolence calls,β he said.
βFirst of many, I would think,β said Walter.
βAnd youβll get Neil to ring his mother?β
βWe will, probably be later this evening,β said Karen.
βWeβll let you know if there are any developments,β said Walter.
Gerry nodded his head and opened the front door and let them out, then watched the woman sergeant walk away toward the opening gates.
A MINUTE LATER BACK in the car Karen said, βWell, what did you make of that?β
βThe mother knows something.β
βThatβs what I thought.β
βWhat do you make of him?β
βFlighty bugger, if you ask me,β said Karen.
βHe liked you.β
βI think he likes women, full stop. Like father, like son.β
βWeβll pay another visit tomorrow, when Gerryβs at work.β
βOK, Guv.β
βIn the meantime, find out everything you can about Veronica Camberwell. Where she lives, where the money came from, where and what her husbandβs business was, and see if you can find any link to Gerry Swaythling.β
βOK, Guv. So who was the glamorous blonde, do you think? Iβm surprised you didnβt ask about her.β
βI want to do that tomorrow, when heβs not there.β
βGotcha.β
βCome on; letβs get back to the station. Timeβs marching on.β
THEY HAD ONLY BEEN back in the office a matter of minutes when Walter took a call. He glanced up at the clock. Half past nine. He thought he was getting hungry. A womanβs voice.
βInspector Darriteau?β
βYes. Whoβs this?β
βGardenia Floem. Remember me?β
βHow could I possibly forget?β
βWould you like to make any comment on reports that Neil Swaythling was shot dead this afternoon?β
βWould you like to tell me where you received such information?β
Gardenia laughed, girlishly, and said, βYou know us journalists, never reveal our sources.β
βSpeak to the press office, theyβll fill you in.β
βBut is it true?β
βSpeak to the press office.β
βJust a simple yes or no would do.β
βDitto.β
She laughed again. She had a nice laugh.
βAre you any nearer to finding the killer?β
βMizz Floem, I am very busy. The press office will give you everything we have.β
βEven I donβt believe that.β
Karen came back and stood beside the desk. Sheβd freshened up. She touched his shoulder and softly said, βIs it OK if I get off?β
Walter nodded and shouted after her, βSee you in the morning.β
βDo you mean me?β said Gardenia.
βNo, I did not mean you, now I really must go.β
βIβll ring you tomorrow.β
βIβd rather you didnβt.β
βFunnily enough, lots of people say that,β she said, still giggling.
βI can believe that too. Goodnight, Mizz Floem,β and he put the phone down before she could say anything else.
MUCH LATER AFTER HEβD climbed into bed he was still thinking of the case. He knew he wouldnβt get much sleep; he never did when a difficult case was ongoing. Heβd keep pulling all the facts apart and putting them back together in different order, hoping that something might stick out.
It sometimes did.
It hadnβt yet.
He thought of poor Jeffrey Player and wondered what the last thoughts were that gushed through his head before he was shot dead, the moment he saw the killer raise the gun, point at his heart, and fire. What had he been thinking of?
