She nods her head but she doesnβt say anything else to me. I give Winnie the go ahead and the two of them jump on the bike and they ride back to the compound. When he checks in and tells me that they are safe, I know itβs time to make that call.
I pull out my phone from my pocket and dial my office. I have a lot to explain. I might as well get this over with now.

I have been sitting in the interrogation room for hours. I explained the situation to my boss but he didnβt seem to want to let it go. He was dead set on making me out to be the one in the wrong. The evidence was clear. I forwarded all the photos that Brendan took of the truck, the cars behind. The bullet holes in the frame and the blown-out window. It was obvious that this was self-defense but they werenβt letting it go as self-defense nor were they focused on the fact that there was a cult right in their backyard. They were more focused on what they could do to get me in jail.
βWhy didnβt you call for backup the second that you realized that you were being followed? Why didnβt you pull over?β
βThat would have been ill-advised as the two cars were already in chase and shooting at us. My main objective was to get my brother away,β I say, making sure to keep my voice even. As of right now they donβt know that Dela was with us only that the cars followed us from the shopping area and opened fire. I told them about them trying to pull us out of the car and when I tried to question them the one person alive killed himself. Everything was evident in the photos that I sent to them. I made sure that Brendan kept copies in case they decide to say that they couldnβt find them. You would be surprised at how many times evidence just disappears here. I wasnβt going to have any of that shit.
βWhere is the girl?β
βWhat girl?
βThe girl you are sure that they are after. You told us that she wasnβt with you but that doesnβt make sense.
βWhat about that doesnβt make sense? Itβs what happened. Maybe they thought she was with me,β I reply.
βSo, where is she?β Tommy asks again.
βI just told you, I donβt know.β Something is off with my boss. There is no reason that he should still be asking for her.
βYouβre lying!β he yells at me.
I sit back and look at him. He is too invested in this.
βWhy donβt you ask Emerson?β
βHe doesnβt . . .β Tommy snaps his jaw shut. He just showed his cards. My Assistant District Deputy knows who Emerson is and is trying to help him. Dela was right, this cultβs reach was wide.
βTell him, he will never find her and to just leave her alone.β
Tommy stands up and stands by the door. βAre you sure this is the fight that you want to have?β
βI donβt have a choice, it seems.β
βYour whole family will be affected.β
βMy whole family, you mean everyoneβs family. Yeah, I know. That doesnβt mean Iβm going to stand down.β I get up from my seat now. βAre you holding me with something because according to all the evidence that was provided to you this is self-defense. Unless, of course, you want to dig deeper into the people that were injured?β
βNo, of course not, Wyatt, we all know that you have always been above reproach.β He smiles and backs away from the door. βYouβre free to go.β
βThank you.β
I step by him and out of the back room.
βOh, by the way, Preston should be checking in any day now. We have some folks flying out to check in on him,β Lynch says from behind me. My head turns slightly but I donβt address him. He wants me to show fear. He wants to let me know that he has the upper hand. He could have my brother killed if I donβt give Dela up but he could do that anyway.
I walk over to my desk and pull out a few things there is no way that Iβm going to be able to come back here while everything is going on. I would have to go over the Assistant Deputy Directorβs head but I didnβt know who I could trust. There is one, Deputy Director Bowman, down in Washington that I have run into from time to time and he seems like a no-nonsense type of person. I could only hope that he hasnβt been affected by the cult over here. I can only hope.
I send off his contact information to Brendan and Cody on my phone and tell them to get everything we know over to Deputy Director Bowman. They donβt ask questions, just do it.
My car is in the parking lot of my office building, I jump in the front seat. A knife slides up to my throat before I even have time to react. Someone was hiding in the back seat.
βShit!β I freeze.
βThis is how this is going to go down. I can have you and your entire family killed. Everyone you ever cared about. I can destroy your name and your career. But I wonβt do it if you give us what we want. Just let her go. Delaney means nothing to you.β
βFuck you. Youβre not going to fucking intimidate me into doing what you want. You want to come for me and my
