āIt was,ā rasped Susanātears beginning to trickle (then, course) their way down her cheeks, once more.
āWhat?ā It was both of the dinner guests! In unison!
āThat is one of the thingsā¦ that Iād mentioned,ā cautioned Eric. āOne of those thingsā¦ that you really didnāt know!ā
āJeff,ā sobbed Susan, āisā¦ well, heāsā¦ heās dead!ā
āHeās what?ā It was Valerie. Jasonāat that pointācouldnāt bring himself to speak! Or anything else!
āHe died,ā revealed Eric. āAbout three-and-a-half years ago. Of Infantile Paralysis.ā
āWell,ā murmured his wife, ātheyāre calling it Polio, now.ā
Jason closed his eyesāand shuddered! From head-to-toe!
Apparently, Jeff had diedāin the late-thirties. Our Hero was, patently, awareāof the fact that Jonas Salkās cure, for the dreaded Polio disease would come to fruition, in 1955! If only the young man couldāve held outāfor another 15 or 16 years! That, of course, wouldāve been impossible! So sad!
Susan continued: āWe keep pretending! Well, I do, anyway. He went to work, this one dayā¦ my Jeff did! He, you know, came home early! He was sick! He really hadnāt been feeling too goodā¦ for the past two or three days. It was, mostly, over the weekend! On Monday, he got upā¦ and he went to work! That did it! He came home! Early . . . like I said. The next day? The next dayā¦ he was dead! I still keep telling myselfā¦ trying to convince myselfā¦ that heās still, you know, at work.ā
āThatās why sheās kept all hisā¦ all his clothes,ā explained Eric. āKept his roomā¦ kept it, in the same way, that it had always been! Cleaned itā¦ every week! Probably,ā he rasped, āevery day! Thatās also why she wanted you to wear his work clothes, Jason! She treasured the factā¦ that she could, then, wash them out! Wash them outā¦ every day! She even kept Jeffās old lunch box! I hadnāt been aware of that! Not till sheād handed the bucket to you, Jasonā¦ for your first day, on the job! That was a bit of aā¦ a bit, of a revelationā¦ to me. It shouldnāt have been. But,ā he wiped aside a tear, āit was! A real revelation!ā
āIā¦ Iād had no idea,ā rasped the younger man. āNo idea! Noneā¦ at all!ā
āWhen you came to us,ā the still-grief-stricken father advised, āit took me an awfully long timeā¦ a really awfully long time! A damnably long timeā¦ to realize that Susieā¦ well, that Susie had found herself another son! Actuallyā¦ truth to tellā¦ that sheād found her āoldā son! Once Iād finally figured that out, I readily agreedā¦ to let her keep you!ā He looked, at Jasonāand smiled, warmly. āOtherwise,ā he continued, āIād have thrown your butt the hell out!ā
Susan seemed to be rallying. āOh, heās not as big a meanieā¦ as heās making himself out to be,ā she maintained. āOtherwiseā¦ if he was that upsetā¦ he never wouldāve offered you a job! Not in a million years! Especiallyā¦ on his jobsite! I donāt care how badly he wouldāve needed the manpower! He never wouldāveā¦ā
āOh,ā muttered Eric, āI guess thatā¦ finally . . . I mustāve kinda taken to him, yāknow. Himā¦ and his abandoned-puppy look. Butā¦ to be completely honestā¦ it was to please Susie! Initially, anyway!ā He arose, and walked over to his wifeāand patted her, on her bottom. āI love my wife, you see!ā The tears were back. āMy beautiful wife! Love herā¦ so very much!ā
She turned to himāreached upāand kissed him! Tenderly!
āOh, you big lug,ā she sighed.
In 1942, that line (and the ālugā word) were in constant usage. Not the āhigh campā phrase it would becomeā15 or 20 years, before Our Boy had been born.
TWENTY SEVEN
Monday, April 13, 1942; Jason arose. This was the morning, after the most amazing dayāof his entire life! It would be difficultāto identify the āhigh pointā, of that remarkable Sunday. But, it had been ātopped offā (more or less) by Our Hero slipping that mind-boggling diamond ring onto Valerieās finger! To a rousing round of applauseāfrom his host and hostess.
Additionally, Eric had offered the guest coupleāonce the four of them had (eventually) finished dinnerāhis two tickets, to the hockey game, to be played that evening. The young man could not bring himself to accept the magnanimous offer. The love that this couple had felt for himāhad shown himāsince heād arrived, was unlike anything heād ever known. Was beyond contemplation! The playoff tickets were simply too much.
This would be the firstāof four straight gamesāthat the Toronto Maple Leafs would win, to overcome the Red Wingsā three-games-to-none series lead! They would go onāand win The Stanley Cup! So, while the game wouldāve held a minimum of interest to the young man (despite his Get-Rich-Quick investment), Ericās offer was something thatāeven on the following morningāhad not failed to bring tears, to Jasonās eyes.
Instead of attending the contest, at the glorious Olympia, he and Valerie went to the movies. After the splendiferousāand over-lengthyārepast that Susan had ālaid onā them, they certainly were not going to dine out.
Casablanca was playing, at The Great Lakes. Jason had seen the movieānumerous times. Grandpa Piepczyk had possessed a well-worn VHS copy of the classicāwhich had starred Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre.
Heād been certain that his bride-to-be would love the flick! And, seemingly, she did! But, sheād spent a whole lot of the movie timeāgazing at her new engagement ring! Continually, sheād flick the glorious piece of jewelryāin numerous anglesāabsorbed in the varying degrees of lighting, from the screen. Theyād never failed to reflectāoff the massive diamond! Clearly, she was thrilledāwith all the dayās happenings! But, eventually, it boiled downāalmost exclusivelyāto her being wrapped up, in her enlarged, engagement ring!
Speaking of the Stanley Cup series, Our Boy found himself wondering whether kindly Mr. Stackhouse would show up at his job, that Monday morning. And, if so, what would this āpillar of the communityā have to say?
Probably nothing! There would be three more games, in the series. All to be won by the Maple Leafs. The next two contests
