cooling as they went, as well as ensuring there wasnโ€™t a poor view to be had. The complex of buildings was loosely rectangular, arranged around a central courtyard with a massive, three-tiered fountain in its center. The fountain was classic with simple flowing lines and flourishes rather than ornate carvings with waterspouts. Palm trees and flowering shrubs grew wherever there was space, giving everything a feeling of overgrowing paradise, newly discovered, like the day theyโ€™d stumbled upon it so desperately.

Flat-roofed buildings had staggered heights, architecturally anchored by the domed roofs of each corner building, which created spaces for rooftop dining, as well as a rooftop shower and soaking pool.

Between the pool room and roofs, he could spend every moment in the open air should he want to, just like his days at sea, as if the island itself was his ship.

There was no retiring from the sea.

He led Helene through the perfumed corridors between the pool room, into the smaller of the kitchen and dining rooms. Yancy Grove was structured so that it could accommodate his whole crew and their immediate families should the need arise, but it was also comfortable to reside in alone. After all, that was how he spent most of his time on the island.

In the kitchen, he indicated that she should take a seat at the counter-island bar chair, while he prepared them a meal, the significance of what had just transpired heavy and unspoken between them.

โ€œYou cook?โ€

He lifted an eyebrow. โ€œI like to eat.โ€

She grinned. โ€œSo do I, and I donโ€™t know the difference between a sautรฉ pan and a boiling pot.โ€

โ€œAt the very least you know what you donโ€™t know,โ€ he said dryly.

She laughed, watching avidly as he sprinkled seasonings. โ€œWhat are we having?โ€

โ€œLightly seared ahi steaks.โ€

โ€œSounds delicious. You donโ€™t have staff here?โ€

Eyeing her, he said, โ€œYour pampered lifestyle is showing, princess.โ€

Hel made a rude gesture with her hand in response. โ€œI donโ€™t need staff. I just expected you would have them.โ€

โ€œAnd why is that?โ€

It was Helโ€™s turn to be dry. โ€œYouโ€™re a double duke.โ€

Her words landed like cold darts. She was right, though he had never truly thought of himself as Duke Andros. That had been his father most of the time and his stolen birthright otherwise.

Instead of the elation he had felt earlier, the knowledge came with a strange sense of emptiness. What was there now that he had achieved his greatest dream?

But to Helene, he said, โ€œI started out as a humble sailor.โ€

Helene rolled her eyes. โ€œThen became an admiral and a duke.โ€

He shook his head, grin flashing. โ€œNo. I was a duke before I was an admiral.โ€

โ€œAnd impossible even before that,โ€ she retorted.

Still grinning, he gave her a little salute before taking the platter of steaks out to the grill. Minutes later he returned to the kitchen, seared ahi ready to serve.

He set the table for the two of them easily, laying out island-grown dates and figs, as well as fresh goat cheese, bread and olives, brought from the mainland by his staff during their once-weekly trips.

He finally answered her question as she joined him in the bright sky-lit breakfast nook. โ€œI donโ€™t keep regular staff here because I like the privacy. I only have guests when I want them.โ€

But he found he didnโ€™t mind sharing the space with Helene.

He had been observing her from the moment heโ€™d seen her in the dโ€™Tierrza courtyard, catching the unguarded moments between her forced nonchalance when her expression was fierce, earnest and so transparent he could read her thoughts like a marquee.

That this woman could be the product of Dominic dโ€™Tierrza was unbelievable.

An entire world had gone up against Dominic dโ€™Tierrza, and as far as Drake could tell, the only one who had walked out even remotely whole was the woman eating at his side. As incredible as it was, and despite the fact that he would have carried out his plans regardless of who she was, respect and affection for her had taken root in their short time together. He hadnโ€™t intended or thought it even possible, but, beyond their incredible sex, he truly liked her.

Or maybe plotting revenge for thirty years had finally pushed him over the edge.

After breakfast, they agreed to rest, though he wasnโ€™t sure how much sleep he would be getting.

Hours spent with Helene were akin to plugging in to a live wire. He was electrified.

He showed her a set of rooms she could use, equipped with their own bathroom and shower, and left her there while he found a change of clothes for her in the supplies closet.

After laying them on the bed, he left the room to take his own shower and rest.

As energizing as her company was, he ultimately fell asleep quickly. Being in the military for so long had taught him to take advantage of opportunities to sleep when he could.

Hours later, he woke, fully alert the moment his eyes opened, another holdover from a career in the service. He was hyperaware of the absence of Helene.

He found her, equally alert, when he rapped on her door. She looked rested, though he wasnโ€™t certain how he could tell, having never observed her looking tired.

He had never met another woman who embodied the word indefatigable so well, something he appreciated as buoyant as he was feeling.

โ€œHow did you sleep?โ€ he asked, smile wide and warm. He was eager to begin planning the next stage now that he had secured her cooperation, but he had the sense not to start when sheโ€™d only just woken up.

Seeing her again, though, after their time in the pool, had his blood thrilling again, his pulse as jumpy and eager as a little boy with a big present.

Impossibly, she was even more beautiful. They had slept much of the day, which was to be expected after almost sixty hours of near constant activity. It was past the normal dinner hour, but still bright enough outside that he considered a late dinner alfresco. And after that, they could christen another
