most of my warnings.

And now the price had been paid.

We must breed with this mysterious female, whom the Stars had chosen to tie to our fate, to prevent our life forces from fading into dust. What a cruel test to endure, and in the end, would we make it out unscathed? Only time could tell.

A faint echo of the pain forced upon my dormant cock’s head pulled my attention to the present. Cupping myself, I pushed some of my remaining stored energy into my throbbing manhood in hopes of calming its aroused state.

How was I going to trust in this odd royal female when I was going to be reminded of the harsh punishment she’d doled out every time I relieved myself? And I was supposed to fornicate with her? The thought was unimaginable under these circumstances.

What if I accidentally triggered some hidden ability of mine in the midst of copulation? Most Cosmic Souls remained celibate for a reason. When we were passionate about another, unpredictable consequences followed, forever changing the path the Stars laid out for us.

I didn’t want to be the reason why the Nova Storm’s crew became dessert to the Vhalxt. It was already my fault we were still stuck here, as I floundered, trying to make contact with any other psychic being. We were out of anyone’s reach, and with each attempt I made to reach out into space, my range diminished. I was getting weaker, not only from the lack of sustenance, but because I’d been cut off from the energy of the stars for too long.

Our Vhalxt abductors must have known about my communicative abilities if they knocked us unconscious until my broadcast range was too short to reach another Cosmic Soul or our species’ ally, the Verya, who governed the Federation. They knew how dependent the Swynemi were on starlight, and by blocking us off from our source of energy in this prison, we grew weak.

Auro or Luwyn were not as debilitated as me because they didn’t possess the same powers, and thus lacked an outlet for the energy their bodies naturally stored. That was the cost of being blessed with the abilities of a Cosmic Soul or royal. We needed to replenish our energy stores often, or we lost all capability.

“You don’t see that every solar,” Auro muttered. I glanced at my captain as we sat with our backs against the wall, watching the pair sleeping entwined together on the floor. “We’ll have to get used to this, however, if we are to bend to our captors’ wishes.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Don’t get what?” His eyes flicked to mine.

“How could he trust her enough to do that?”

“People do the strangest things to survive.” A sad smile pulled at his lips. “For him, the chance to experience the bliss of his cock being squeezed by a female—a pretty one, at that—one more time before the end may be the last sliver of joy he will ever feel.” He cupped my knee and gave it a quick squeeze. “I don’t blame you for our current situation, but I believe your Stars have given up on us.”

“Or this was all in their plan,” I defended, gazing at the female. Her long, silver hair covered Luwyn’s body while he held her tight. The reddened marks on her face caught my attention; I needed to touch her to heal her soon. I winced at the thought of how she would react. “I am going to need to heal her face soon. Her injuries are worsening.”

“Why not heal her now, while they are sleeping, and he has a hold on her?” He chuckled and smacked the side of my leg. “Besides, by the sounds they were making, they won’t be awake anytime soon.”

I shot him a flustered look, trying to gauge whether he was joking or not, only to find him smirking at me, his emerald eyes swirling with mirth. “How are you so sure?”

“If—or when—you decide to take a shot at her, you’ll understand.” He jerked his chin in their direction. “Until then, trust me.”

“Trust you,” I muttered as I stood up and adjusted my loincloth. My body had finally healed, and only a slight stiffness remained, but I was thankful nothing was broken. “If she ends up biting my hand off, I will feed it to you for misleading me.”

Contagious laughter rolled from my captain, forcing me to smile. I would cherish small moments of happiness like this, for that was all we had left in our time of darkness.

Nervously, I approached the dozing pair, careful not to wake them from their peaceful slumber. About halfway to them, Luwyn’s eyes shot open as his head jerked in my direction.

I’d been foolish to think I could sneak up on the Weapons Master. Stealth and offense were his greatest strengths.

Wings pinned tightly to my back; I raised my hands in a gesture of peace. “I am only trying to heal her before she wakes. I didn’t mean to startle you.”

He narrowed his eyes before glancing down at the sleeping female curled against his chest.

“I can hardly believe what I just did,” he muttered as he gently lifted a strand of her hair. “Never before has a female come onto me the way she did. Usually, I’m the one in charge, controlling our movements how I see fit. Even with the more enthusiastic partners, they always want me to do all the work once we’re alone.”

I looked away as soon as I felt my cheeks burn from his lewd comments. “I will take your word on it.”

“Unless you plan on becoming Vhalxt food anytime soon, I would gather up the courage to try and get through to her, too.”

“Wait—” I choked, shooting a glance at the smirking male. “You fully bonded with her?”

“How else is she supposed to get pregnant?” he challenged. “You are the healer. You know full well that each one of us has to activate our mating pheromones as we send our sperm into her.”

“I know, but
