Once home, Jason bought a floor-model Grundig Majestic stereoā€”and put the ā€œstill-wonderfulā€ Columbia 360, in Susanā€™s room. Heā€™d also bought the LP of the Original Cast recording, of ā€œHappy Fellaā€ā€”in stereo! Two years later, he would blunder onto an additional album (Costing $39.95)! This treasure-trove contained six magnificent LP stereo discs. The new, ā€œunbelievableā€, collection had featured the entire showā€”dialogue and musicā€”all recorded, on the 12 ā€œsidesā€! ā€œRemarkable!ā€ (Quoth Jason.)

November 22, 1963: JFK assassinated! And Susan had grown ā€œrather sicklyā€ Jason had hired a pair of full-time nursesā€”to watch over her! Day and night! She would be 65-years-oldā€”come February! ā€œStill too youngā€¦ to be in the condition, sheā€™s in.ā€ (Also, quoth Jason.)

That evening, Susan asked Jason to join her, in her ā€œquartersā€ā€”adjoining the living room, He couldnā€™t imagine what this magnificent woman had in mind. Sheā€™d seated herself, on the bedā€”and indicated he should occupy the overstuffed chair, across from her.

ā€œJason,ā€ she began, ā€œI donā€™t have that much time, left here. Soon, Iā€™m going to be joining my husband.ā€

ā€œOh, Susie, thatā€™s notā€¦ā€ he blustered. But, she held up a handā€”and stopped him!

ā€œListen, Honey!ā€ Her voice appeared to be the slightest bit stronger. ā€œThis is a conversation we need to have! At least, I need it. Jason-Baby, you must . . . you simply have to tell meā€¦ tell me, honestly! You must tell meā€¦ from where you came!ā€

ā€œListen, Susie. This isā€¦ā€

ā€œJason,ā€ she interrupted. ā€œIā€™ve saved those dollar billsā€¦ the ones you first gave meā€¦ back when you came to me. Iā€™d notedā€¦ immediately . . . that theyā€™d said ā€˜Federal Reserve Noteā€™. Maybe I shouldnā€™t have noticed that. Maybe no one else . . . I donā€™t thinkā€¦ wouldā€™ve noticed. But, I noticed! Later, once Iā€™d had a chance to look at them, closely . . . to really inspect themā€¦ I could see that they were from the nineteen-nineties!ā€

ā€œLook, Susieā€¦ā€

ā€œFrom the moment, I guessā€¦ from the moment I first saw youā€¦ Iā€™d always had this feeling! This special feeling, that there was somethingā€¦ well, something special! Something special . . . about you! Listen, Jason! From the moment that Jeff . . . that my Jeff . . . from the moment, that he was taken from meā€¦ from that moment on . . . I prayed! I prayedā€¦ and prayed and prayed! I prayedā€¦ and asked The Lord. I pleaded . . . with The Lordā€¦ to send me someone! Someoneā€¦ to take his place! To take Jeffā€™s place! I was unableā€¦ to bear any more children! Jeff wasā€¦ to be my only offspring! So, I asked Godā€¦ asked Him, again and againā€¦ to, please, send me someone! Someoneā€¦ to be in Jeffā€™s place! I have the feelingā€¦ that Eric had always prayed the same prayer!. He just never would talk about it!ā€

ā€œSusie, I canā€™tā€¦ā€

ā€œThen,ā€ she resumed, ā€œthere you were! Knocking at my door! In nineteen-forty-two! I didnā€™t realize itā€¦ not right then . . . but, it didnā€™t take me long to figure out, who you were! Who you actually are! I guess it wasā€¦ was when you were trying to lay the most cockamamie story Iā€™d ever heard, on me!ā€ She was able to muster a smile! A warm smile. One bursting with sincerity! And love! ā€œI realized, then,ā€ she went on. ā€œRealized that you wereā€¦ were that gift! A genuine gift! From God!ā€

ā€œAw, Susie. You canā€™t say that! Not without knowing thatā€¦ā€

ā€œI can say it! I know it! Know itā€¦ for a fact! It took Eric, maybe, a little while longer! Iā€™d never mentioned anything to himā€¦ but, eventually, he caught on. He figured it out! Now, listen to me! I know . . . know that, somehow, you were! Were sent to me! And this is the time . . . this is the moment . . . that you need to tell me! You need to level, with me, Jason! From where did you come? Was itā€¦ was it from the future?ā€

ā€œI donā€™t knowā€¦ donā€™t know, if I can really tell you, Susie.ā€

ā€œWhy? Why, Jason? Why canā€™t you tell me? What are you afraid of?ā€

ā€œIā€™mā€¦ Iā€™m afraid thatā€¦ that, if I doā€¦ Iā€™m afraid that Iā€™ll get sent back! I donā€™t want to go back! I really canā€™tā€¦ā€

ā€œOh, I donā€™t think that a Godā€¦ One who was so loving, so caring . . . would do a thing like that! Not after Heā€™s given you such a beautiful wifeā€¦ and three darling daughters. And Heā€™s given you me! I just hope that Iā€™ve given back! Given back enoughā€¦ to you, My Dear.ā€

He got upā€”and sat beside her! Then, he put his head downā€”on her lap! As before! That many years before! Andā€”he began to weep! To weepā€”once again!

ā€œHe simply would not do that,ā€ she repeated, softly rubbing the back of his headā€”just above his skull. ā€œI have no idea . . . about the situation, from which you mightā€™ve come. Butā€¦ā€

ā€œIt really was not a good one,ā€ he lamented. The stream of tears lightened, somewhat. But, they continued to come.

ā€œWell, if youā€™re that afraidā€¦ if you feel in that much jeopardyā€¦ then, I have no right to ask you toā€¦ā€

ā€œIā€™m going to tell you,ā€ he sniffedā€”and resumed a sitting position. ā€œIā€™m going to tell you! Tell youā€¦ anyway! I love you, Susie! Love youā€¦ dearly!ā€

ā€œEnough to risk losingā€¦ losing everything? Donā€™t you do it, Jason. At this point, I know everything! Everythingā€¦ I need to know! Youā€™re from the future! You are! And you were sent to me! By The Lord . . . Himself! My gift!ā€

Again, he put his head down, on her lap! This time, there was no stemming the flow! The dam had burst! The ā€œgiftteeā€™ resumed patting him, on his head!

Ten minutes later, Valerieā€”ever so silentlyā€”opened the door. Three or four secondsā€”after beholding the sceneā€”she smiled. And, quietly, she closed the door.

That night, Susan ā€œwent onā€¦ to be with The Lord!ā€ Silently! Happily!

Now she knows . . . for sure! (Well, he was positive that sheā€™d knownā€”ā€œfor sureā€ā€”anyway.)

January 24, 1964: Cynthia auditioned for a role, in a road companyā€™s production, of Boys From Syracuseā€”originally a Rodgers & Hart adaptation, of Shakespeareā€™s Comedy Of Errors. The original show had opened, on Broadwayā€”in 1938ā€”and had featured Eddie Albert (of Green Acres fame).

Cynthia was accepted. Became part of the
