It was all too much, but Charlotte would understand. βI wonβt put you off, believe me.β
Braham returned with a handful of gauze pads. βWhat now?β
βWheel the gurney over here, and letβs get Remy on it.β
βI can walk,β Remy said.
βYou can walk out tomorrow. Right now, Iβm trying to control the bleeding. So be still.β
βCan ye take care of it?β Braham asked, βor should we take him to the hospital?β
βI can do it. Both are flesh wounds. He got lucky.β
Braham lowered the gurney, and Remy used his forearms to pull himself on it. βYeah, real lucky.β
βLet me take the brooch and lock it in the safe before it gets lost.β
βSure,β Remy said, slapping it down on Brahamβs palm.
βWhat can I do to help?β Ensley asked.
βThereβs a chart on the wall of the exam room with concussion symptoms. Run through the checklist with Austin.β
βHe ainβt got aβ¦conβ¦cussion,β Remy said, slurring his words. βBastardβs headβs too hard.β
βYouβre probably right,β Charlotte said, smiling at Ensley, βbut just in case he has a soft spot we havenβt seen before, Ensley should check him out.β
βI donβt need a chart. I learned all the symptoms during my bull-riding days and never forgot them.β
βBull riding?β Braham asked, giving her an appreciative nod. βThat does take balls.β
βI havenβt been on a bull in over a decade,β she said. βMy last ride didnβt have the best outcome.β
βBut you just rode a bronc,β Austin said.
βI shouldnβt have, but I couldnβt resist the temptation.β Ensley went through her mental concussion checklist and asked Austin, βDo you know where you are?β
βThe cleanroom.β
βWhereβs that?β
βOn the plantation near Richmond.β
βOkay, now follow my finger.β She held up a finger and slowly moved it side to side. βHow many fingers do you see?β
βOne.β
βAre you sick to your stomach?β
βNot sick. Not dizzy. Just a headache.β He grabbed hold of one of the steel tableβs legs and pulled himself up.
βAre you dizzy now?β she asked.
βNope.β He reached down for her. βAre you?β
βNo. Iβm good. Weβre both good, Charlotte. What else can I do?β
βThe shower is over there,β she said, pointing to a door beneath a sign that said Locker Room. βGo get cleaned up. Youβll find everything you need, from scrubs to shampoo. Help yourself.β
Double doors swished open, and David and Kenzie strode in, stopped short, and Davidβs brown eyes lasered in on Ensley, Austin, and then Remy. βWelcome back, but where the hell is JC?β He then looked at Braham. βAnd Elliott and his crew?β
βForget them. Iβm shotβ¦in the ass.β Remy flung out his hand. βHold my hand, Ensley.β
βLeave my girl alone, man,β Austin said, grinning at her.
βYour girl? Fuckβ¦ Since when?β
Yeah! Since when?
Kenzie made a beeline to Ensley and hugged her. βI hope it wasnβt too horrible. It seems every new adventure is worse than the last.β
Ensley accepted the warm hug and tried to smile, but her face failed to cooperate. βI made it back, and thatβs all that matters right now.β
βHow long were ye in the past?β David asked.
βWeeks,β Ensley said.
βThree days,β Austin added.
Kenzie threw shade at Austin. βThree days, and youβre already calling Ensley, βmy girl.β Damn, you OβGrady men move fast. Youβve even got Rick beat. Canβt wait to hear this one.β
Ensley tipped her head back so she could look up at Austin. βHeβs exaggerating. He calls his horse βmy girl,β too.β
βMy horse is a stallion, and Iβm as straight as that ruler over there.β Then Austin slapped his chest and crooked up a corner of his mouth in a too-knowing smirk. βI thought you had feelings for me. Did I misread your signals?β
Before she could respond with something not too off-color about a holiday romance, fog rose out of the concrete floor next to her. Startled, she forgot about Austin and jumped out of the way before the fog snatched her up and carried her off again. No mulligans for her. No double-whammies. No repeat performances. Her feet were staying safely in the twenty-first century.
A manβs voice yelled from inside the fog, βIβll kill you if you donβt get off me.β
Thatβs not just any manβs voice. Itβs JC!
David darted over to a storage cabinet and threw open the doors. Kenzie and Braham joined him, and they all grabbed a weapon and extra mags. When Austin and Ensley saw what they were doing, they both reached for guns and mags. Then, taking their cues from the others, they chambered a round. The five of them formed a circle around the fog and took up shooting stances.
When the fog cleared, Elliott was sitting on top of JC, pinning his muscular arms to the floor. Shit! JC had expected the reunion with his father would be testy, but it looked far worse than that.
Ensley lowered her weapon, as did the others.
JC wasnβt wearing a stitch of clothing, but a swath of red fabric was tangled around his abdomen and thighs. Whereβd he get those pecs? He looked like one of the bodybuilders who worked out at her gym, complete with bulging veins. But wait a minuteβ¦ When he stripped off his shirt to wash up that first night at Elkhorn Ranch, he didnβt look like he did now. And that was only a couple of weeks ago.
βSettle down, son, before one of us gets hurt.β
JC pulled up his legs and twisted his upper body, unbalancing Elliott. Then using the power in his legs, he rolled over, reversing their positions.
David shoved his gun into his waistband, came up behind JC, and grabbed him in a chokehold. βJC, calm down before ye hurt yer father or I hurt ye.β
βLet go of me, David. I donβt want to hurt you.β
βStop fighting yer da. Now!β
When David didnβt release his hold, JC flipped him, and David landed on his back.
JC jumped to his feet. βLeave me the hell alone. That means
