It took a moment before Byam understood what she was talking about. It hadnโt thought of the cintamani in years. But then the surge of bitterness and longing was as fresh as ever, even in the midst of Byamโs grief.
โItโs in the name, isnโt it?โ said Byam. โThe jewel that grants all wishes.โ
โDo you have a lot of wishes that need granting?โ
Byam could think of some, but to tell Leslie about them would only distress her. It wasnโt like Leslie wanted to die. At sixty-three she still had so much left she wanted to see and do in this life.
Byam had always thought before that humans must be used to dying, since they did it all the time. But now it had got to know them better, it saw they had no idea how to deal with it.
This was unfortunate, because Byam didnโt know either.
โI guess I just always imagined Iโd have one some day,โ it said. It tried to remember what it had felt like before it had given up on becoming a dragon and acquiring its own cintamani. โIt was likeโฆ if I didnโt have that hope, life would have no meaning.โ
Leslie nodded. She was still gazing out of the window. โYou should try again.โ
โLetโs not worry about it nowโฆโ
โYou have thousands of years,โ said Leslie. โYou shouldnโt just give up.โ She looked Byam in the eye. โDonโt you still want to be a dragon?โ
Byam would have liked to say โnoโ. It was unfair of Leslie to awaken all these dormant feelings in Byam at a time when it already had too many feelings to deal with.
โEun-hye should be here soon,โ it said. Leslieโs niece was almost the same age Leslie had been when Byam had first come to her office with murder in its heart. Eun-hye had a child herself now, which still seemed implausible to Byam. โSheโs bringing Sam, wonโt that be nice?โ
โDonโt talk to me like Iโm an old person,โ said Leslie, annoyed. โIโm dying, not decrepit. Come on, Byam. I thought repression was a human thing.โ
โThat shows how much you know,โ said Byam. โWhen youโve been a failure for three thousand years, you get good at repressing things.โ
โIโm just sayingโโ
โI donโt know why youโreโฆโ Byam scrubbed its face. โAm I not good enough as I am?โ
โOf course youโre good enough,โ said Leslie. โIf youโre happy, then thatโs fine. But you should know you can be anything you want to be. Thatโs all. I donโt want you to let fear hold you back.โ
Byam was silent.
Leslie said, โI only want to know youโll be OK after Iโm dead.โ
โI wish youโd stop saying that,โ said Byam.
โI know.โ
โI donโt want you to die.โ
โI know.โ
Byam laid its head on the bed. If it closed its eyes it could almost pretend they were home, with the cat snoozing on Leslieโs feet.
After a while it said, without opening its eyes, โWhatโs your next form going to be?โ
โI donโt know,โ said Leslie. โWe donโt get told in advance.โ She brightened. โMaybe Iโll be an imugi.โ
โDonโt say such things,โ said Byam, aghast. โYou havenโt been that bad!โ
This made Leslie laugh, which made her cough, so Byam called the nurse, and then Eun-hye came with her little boy, so there was no more talk of dragons or cintamani or reversing a pragmatic surrender to the inevitable.
That night the old dreams started again โ the ones where Byam was a dragon. But they were a relief compared to the dreams it had been having lately.
It didnโt mention them to Leslie. She would only say, โI told you so.โ
*
For a long moment after Byam woke, it was confused. The cintamani still hung in the air before it. Then it blinked and the orb revealed itself to be a lamp by the hospital bed.
Leslie was awake, her eyes on Byam. โHey.โ
Byam wiped the drool from its cheek, sitting up. โDo you want anything? Water, orโโ
โNo,โ said Leslie. Her voice was thin, a mere thread of sound. โI was just watching you sleep like a creeper.โ
But then she paused. โThere is something, actually.โ
โYeah?โ
โYou donโt have to.โ
โIf thereโs anything I can give you,โ said Byam, โyouโll get it.โ
Still Leslie hesitated.
โCould I see you?โ she said finally. โIn your true form, I mean.โ
There was a brief silence.
Leslie said, โIf you donโt want toโฆโ
โNo, itโs fine,โ said Byam. โAre you sure you wonโt be scared?โ
Leslie nodded. โItโll still be you.โ
Byam looked around the room. There wasnโt enough space, so it would have to make itself smaller. But that was a simple magic.
It hadnโt expected the sense of relief as it expanded into itself. It was as though for several decades it had been wearing shoes a size too small and now it had been allowed to take them off.
Leslieโs eyes were wide.
โAre you OK?โ said Byam.
โYes,โ said Leslie, but she raised her hands to her face. Byam panicked, but before it could transform again, Leslie rubbed her eyes and said, โDonโt change back! I havenโt looked properly yet.โ
Her eyes were wet. She studied Byam as though she was trying to imprint the sight onto her memory.
โIโd look better with legs,โ said Byam shyly. โAnd antlers. And a bumpy foreheadโฆโ
โYouโre beautiful.โ Leslie touched Byamโs side. Her hand was warm. โIt was you, wasnโt it? That day in the mountains.โ
Byam shrank back. It said, its heart in its mouth, โYou knew?โ
โIโve known for a while.โ
โWhy didnโt you say anything?โ
โGuess I was waiting for you to tell me.โ Leslie gave Byam a half-smile. โYou know me, I hate confrontation. Anything to avoid a fight.โ
โI should have told you,โ said Byam. โI wanted to, I justโฆโ It had never been able to work out how to tell Leslie its original plan had been to devour her in an act of misdirected revenge.
Dumb, dumb, dumb. Byam could only blame itself for its failures.
โYou shouldโve done.โ But Leslie didnโt seem mad. Maybe she just didnโt have the energy for it anymore.
โIโm sorry,โ said Byam. Leslie held out her hand and it slid closer,
