Steel narrowed his eyes at me and stomped out of the room, muttering under his breath. Wolf came closer, slinging his arm around my shoulders.
“You’ve done it now,” he said. “He can be touchy about the age difference between him and Rachel.”
I leaned against him. “Sorry. I just found it funny he called you a boy when his wife is younger than you. I couldn’t resist. I’ll apologize.”
“Just leave it,” Wolf said. “He’ll get over it.”
I looked around and winced at the destruction. So much hard work. Wrecked. Ruined. Much like the women who came here. We’d have to put in the time to resurrect this place. I’d healed from what happened the night Sienna was conceived, and this clinic -- as well as any women who came here -- could be healed as well. It just took patience and time.
“There’s not much I can do here, is there?”
Wolf shook his head. “Sorry, baby. We’ll get the Prospects in here to clean the place up. Until the security has been upgraded, we’ll have to keep it shut down. I hate that those women and girls won’t have anywhere like this to go, but we can’t risk putting them or you in danger.”
“I know. It just sucks. Now what am I going to do?”
He tipped my chin up. “I know you’re the independent sort, which I admire, but you aren’t in this alone. You don’t have to work yourself to the bone. You want to volunteer here? Fine. Focus on your degree and don’t worry about a paying job. I’ve got my girls covered, understood?”
I knew he wasn’t trying to be bossy or keep me from working. The Wolf I’d come to know was kind and sweet. Of course, to be part of the Devil’s Fury, I was certain he had a darker side. One I hadn’t seen yet. But with me and Sienna, he’d been gentle and incredibly patient.
“I’m not used to someone else paying for things I need. Even when I lived with my parents, I still worked for most of what I wanted or needed. They covered the basics, but everything else came out of my pocket.”
“And it made you a strong woman. Little did they realize they’d prepared you for the time they turned their backs on you. I’m sorry you went through that, but, Glory, I meant what I said. You’re mine, and that means I get to take care of you. Whether it’s buying diapers, paying for groceries, or footing the bill for anything else the two of you need or want. I consider it an honor.”
I kissed him, letting my lips linger on his a moment. “Thank you, Wolf.”
“I’ve wanted a family of my own for a while now, Glory. I should be thanking you. Having you and Sienna in my life is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
I hugged him tight. “We should probably get her.”
He ran a hand down my back. “We will. Soon. First, I need to take you somewhere, and no arguments. Not now and not when we get there. Elena wouldn’t have offered to watch her if she couldn’t handle it.”
“Fine. I know she’s watched her before, but that was a necessity while I went on my ride-alongs or searched for a job. This is different. But I reserve the right to call and check on her. Frequently.”
He kissed my cheek. “You can call or text as much as you want. When you annoy the shit out of Elena and she refuses to share those enchiladas I know you love, you won’t have anyone to blame but yourself.”
Damn. He wasn’t wrong about the enchiladas. I didn’t know what she put in them, but they were like crack. The one time she’d brought an entire dish over to me I’d inhaled them in one night. Then paid the price when I thought I might explode. It had been my welcome gift the first week I’d been here.
“All right. I’ll only check in once.” No way I was going to ruin my chances of getting more enchiladas.
Wolf herded me out to his truck. Even though I’d have loved to ride on the back of his bike, we’d dropped Sienna off with Elena and Outlaw so the truck had been necessary. Although, I now had to wonder if he’d also brought it for whatever errands we were about to run.
As much as I hated surprises, getting to spend more time with Wolf wasn’t a bad thing. He made butterflies flap in my stomach. I’d always loved watching romantic comedies, even though I’d never experienced any of those things for myself. Until Wolf. With him, I felt… everything. I wanted him to kiss me and never stop. To touch me. I wanted to hold his hand just because I liked having that small contact with him.
He parked at the mall and winked at me. “Ready to shop?”
“Shop?” I asked. “For what?”
“Everything.” He got out and came around to my side, helping me down from the truck. “Let me spoil the two of you a little.”
When he put it like that, I couldn’t tell him no. I could tell it meant a lot to him. A flash of excitement lit his eyes when he took my hand and led me into the mall. It made me wonder if he’d gone shopping with Franny. Part of me wanted to ask, but I held back. What if I didn’t like the answer? He’d known her before I’d ever moved to Blackwood Falls. It wasn’t fair for me to feel jealous over the relationship they’d had. Clearly, she’d walked away and started a new life somewhere else. I couldn’t imagine letting a guy like Wolf slip through my fingers.
“You’re going to need the right clothes for riding on my bike,” he said. “And boots, but we’ll get those somewhere else.”
He took me to a shop filled with casual clothes. The other shoppers looked to be near my age. More than one eyed
