189 ff., reveals, through a random sample of files from the Würzburg Gestapo that of 210

cases of racial defilement, ‘behaviour friendly to the Jews’ or criticism of Germany’s

Judenpolitik investigated by the Gestapo, almost 60 per cent were persecuted on the

basis of denunciations from the population and 13 per cent on the basis of denunci-

ations by Party or Party members. This makes it clear that the persecution of the Jews

by the Gestapo depended to a large extent upon the cooperation of the population,

i.e. on denunciations. Johnson, Nazi Terror, 150 ff., revealed through a random sample

that 41 per cent of 66 investigations against Jews pursued by the Gestapo between 1933

and 1939 in Krefeld were based on denunciations; the author attributes much less

importance to informers from the population than does Gellately.
