herd cattle as well as the cowboys, you could do other things, like ride a bronc. You garnered their respect.”

“There wasn’t a day, an hour, a minute, a second that I didn’t worry about you. But I knew if I hovered, you’d bust my balls, so I had to find another way to keep you safe. I didn’t do such a good job. You almost got killed by a bear.”

She pressed her finger against his lips. “Shhh. Nobody could have seen that coming, and I’d been warned about the bear and still went off without my rifle. I’ll never do that again. My stupidity cost Erik his life.”

Austin stroked his hands up and down her legs and over her hips. “That grizzly was supposed to be miles away. Plus, you’d been alone in the wilderness for days without a rifle, and that probably did give you a false sense of security. But Erik knew what was going to happen, and he didn’t back down. He was saving his daughter, and what father wouldn’t?”

“Not one I know.”

“Me neither. Pops went on the warpath after the cartel shot JL, and he didn’t get off it until he brought everyone involved to justice.”

“How old were you?”

Austin pressed his forehead against her belly, and she ran her fingers through his damp hair. “A teenager. I remember wanting a handgun. I wanted to find those bastards and shoot every one of them. Rick caught me trying to sneak his service revolver out of the house. Instead of telling Pops, who would have grounded me for months, if not years, he sat me down, and we had a long talk about vengeance. I knew then, even if I never had a basketball career, that I could never be a cop.”

“Then what would you have done?”

“Probably auditioned for a Broadway show. Rick has a stronger voice and can dance better, but I can hold my own, even as tall as I am.”

“Broadway, huh?”

He nodded as he slowly slipped one thin strap off her shoulder. “I have a musical theater voice. Rick has a Top 40 voice. If he ever decided to cut a record, it would hit the charts.”

“Now that I’ve heard him sing, I don’t doubt it.”

Austin slipped the other thin strap off her shoulder and pulled the gown down until it puddled on the floor. She stepped out of it and stood there, wearing only her heels. There was no shyness, no hesitation, no reservation. She was coming to him because she loved his gentle heart and his need to protect her even though he knew how capable she was.

“You have no idea how beautiful you are, do you? Your body is absolute perfection. It’s sculpted and toned, with visible muscles in all the right places, and your breasts are high, full, and natural. Your nipples are sensitive to my mouth and hand, and they respond when I caress and suck on them, and you wiggle your hips when you walk, and it’s sexy as hell.”

He lifted her, and she straddled his legs. “I don’t want to hurt you, so you take the lead, take as much as you want. If it gets uncomfortable, we’ll use lube, but keep talking to me and tell me what feels good and what doesn’t. It might take a while, but we can do this.”

She kissed him. “You’re a big guy, but you’re not as big as those five babies we hope to have.”

His deep dimples framed his face, making him even sexier. “Since I’ve never before been with a woman I wanted to have a baby with, I never thought of that.” He lay back and pulled her down on top of him, kissing her mouth with unfulfilled hunger. Then he released her lips to rain kisses on her brow, her closed eyelids, her cheekbones. “You have grabbed hold of my spinning world and stopped it cold.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“It’s a damn good thing.”

Ensley sat up and started untucking the end of Austin’s towel in slow, giddy anticipation. Her fingertips vibrated with the urge just to yank it off, but her goal was to torture him and unwrap his package like it was a Christmas gift. Even though she desperately wanted to see him, touch him, taste him, she took her time, letting the tension build.

And when he was finally gloriously naked, she took his erection—full and flat against his belly—in both hands and stroked him, and with each stroke, he gasped. And she loved the impatience flashing in his eyes, and maybe there was a little bit of fear there, too. Fear that she would jump off him and run away.

No way was she going to chicken out now. If a thousand-pound bull couldn’t scare her off its back, a larger-than-normal erection wasn’t going to either. But as they say in the bull-riding business, “If you’re not nervous every time you ride, something’s wrong with you.”

She was nervous for sure, but she was ready for the chute gate to open, ready for Austin, and ready for the most incredible ride of her life.

He shoved another pillow behind his head so he’d have a better view of what she was doing. And his pecs, biceps, and abs rippled with every move he made. “Do you like what you see?” she asked.

“Of course. Do you like what you see?” he asked.

“Of course.”

“Are you going to ride me the way you did in your bull-riding days?”

She gave him her best mischievous smile. “I was thinking about it.”

“Don’t think. Just do it!”

“Before every bull ride, I’d do an air ride as a warm-up. That’s like playing air guitar. I’d go through the motions of how I would move, what I would do. I would imagine the hot flesh between my legs.”

His erection twitched in her hand at either her touch or her word art, probably both. And he gave her one of his specialty grins. “Did you do an air ride while you were in the shower?”

She matched his grin and
