Without another thought, he tips his chin in acknowledgement, then moves to sit down. Uncorking the top, he doesnβt even verify the timing or go over the plan again. He just slams the contents and lets the empty vial clatter across the ground.
He opens his mouth, probably to say something, but his eyes immediately roll to the back of his head. I dash over, reaching him just in time to ease his torso to the ground.
βNow, you must focus on summoning his soul from his body. See in your mindβs eye walking with him through the veil from this world to the next, but do not allow yourself to be pulled with him. You must stay on this side in order to awaken him,β Abigail says, her furrowed eyebrows scrunched in thought.
βNothing to it,β I whisper to myself, unsure any of this is a good idea at all. But at least itβs in motion and I have no choice but to make this work.
Still kneeling beside him, I close my eyes and focus on calling Dominicβs soul from the confines of his body. Behind my eyelids a bright, blue orb forms.
βGood. Very good,β Abigail mutters her approval. Thereβs a strange admiration in her tone and I know this must be something she wishes she could do for herself.
I settle into the energy, allowing it to fill up my perception. Itβs not all that unlike astral-projecting, but it feels different. Denser somehow. It doesnβt take long to latch onto Dominicβs energy, but rather than forming as a person, I continue to see the blue orb within my mindβs eye. A silver string also extends from the orb, making its way out of the darkness. Suddenly, as if the orb knows what it needs to do, it sails out and away from me. It vanishes through time and space, pulled somehow into what seems like a black hole. However, the silver string remains, floating like chemtrails in the air.
When I open my eyes, I realize itβs attached to his abdomen.
βThe rest is now up to him,β Abigail says. βHe had but moments, so be ready.β
I nod, exhaling a tense breath.
While astral-projecting is similar, walking to the edge of the veil was something else. There was a darkness beyondβan energy that consumed all light, if you werenβt careful. And Iβm not sure whether or not sending Dominic into that was a wise choice.
βIt is time,β Abigail says. βSummon the boy back.β
Nodding to her, I close my eyes, and take a deep breath. Unlike when I tried to bring Cat back, thereβs a deep, powerful connectionβlike a direct line that binds us together. I can already tell that I donβt need some of the other ingredients, like the bloodβor even the invocation. His soul, the bright blue orb, is right before me. All I need to do is encourage him to return to his vessel.
Like a conductor, I raise my arms in front of me, trying to guide it back to where it belongs.
βThatβs it,β Abigail says, her voice lifting in tone. βContinue with the intention.β
Exhaling any nervous energy, I focus on the orb, directing it lower. When it reaches Dominicβs body, it hovers there. Rather than sinking back into his body, the energy is more like two magnets with opposing forces trying to connect.
βSomething is not right,β I say, narrowing my gaze and trying harder.
βHe is choosing to stay separated,β Abigail says, her eyes distant.
βWhat?β I spit. βWhy would he do that?β
Abigail shakes her head. βOf that, I do not know.β
βGoddammit, Dominic,β I cry out, dropping to my knees and shaking his body. βGet your ass back to me. You promised youβd help me.β
A new kind of panic flashes through me and I rake my fingers through my hair.
What is he doing? This is the last thing I need right now and he knows that.
So, why the hell wonβt he come back?
Chapter 15
The Other Side
My blood boils, and I imagine the various ways Iβm going to kick Dominicβs ass when I finally get him back.
βCome back. Right now,β I cry out, clutching at his shoulders and shaking his torso. The silver string remains, but with each passing moment, it seems to fade.
His body is limp and the edges of his lips are taking on a faint bluish tint.
I shake my head in disbelief. βOh, no you donβtβ¦β
Closing my eyes, I try to tap into universal energies and the deeper parts of my giftsβparts I didnβt know existed, as I try to summon him back. Without thinking about the words, they spring to my lips. βDominic Craneβwandering soul, I summon you back from the realm of the dead. Return, fragments of soul and self, from that of the spirit realm, to re-inhabit the body.β
I open my eyes and for a brief moment, the blue orb of light grows brighter, but it doesnβt get any closer to his body.
βFuck,β I spit, slamming the side of my fist into the dirt. βWhat am I doing wrong?β
βThis is of no oneβs doing but his own. The boy is refusing to come back,β Abigail whispers feverishly beside my ear.
βHow do I get him back?β I say through gritted teeth.
Abigailβs lips press tight and she shakes her head.
βDonβt you dare tell me thereβs no way,β I say, reeling on her. βThere has to be a way. Iβll drag him back kicking and screaming if I have to.β
Her eyebrows tug in and her nostrils flare as if the thought of it is distasteful. However, she whispers, βIf you are to stand any chance, it would come at great risk.β
Iβm suddenly on my feet. βHow do I do it?β I demand.
Abigailβs expression is grim as she says, βYour soul must leave your body to follow after him.β
βSo, how is that any different from what Iβve been doing? Astral projection and all that. Hell, what I just didββ I start.
βIt is not the same. You leave
