βFocus,β he whispers, tilting his head slightly.
My eyes flicker shut, and I do as Iβm asked. I think about Wadeβ¦our connection, his birthright, the mark of expulsion, the infection as it took him over, the Moiraiβall of it.
The events flicker behind my eyelids and I can tell the information is coming in strong for Dominic, too. He holds still, barely breathing as he consumes the information coming at him.
After a few moments, he says, βThe markβwhat did you think it was?β
βHis father said it was the mark of expulsion. Heβs no longer going to be an angel,β I whisper, opening my eyes.
Dominicβs eyes remain shut and his head is tilted, like heβs listening to something in the air.
βHmmm,β he says, his forehead wrinkling in concentration.
βWhat? What do you see? What can we do?β I ask, gripping his hands tighter.
βThereβs so much haze around it. Itβs like itβs all wrapped up in a magical snowball. The Moirai are a part of this. The markβ¦β he says, shaking his head. βThereβs something off about the mark.β
βNo shit. Itβs infecting him. Whatever it is, itβs spread all over his torso. He saidββmy voice cracks as I remember his last wordsββhe said he could smell burnt flesh and hair.β
βI donβt get it. Every time I try to understand this mark, itβs like it starts to get clear, then moves out of focus,β he says, shaking his head.
βWhat do you think that means?β
βIβm notβ¦β he gapes at me, yanking his hands back. βHoly shitβyouβre pregnant?β
βI donβt know that itβs any of your business,β I say, blinking hard at him.
Dominic scrambles to his feet. βLike hell. You wanted to know whatβs happeningβwhatβs coming. How am I supposed to be effective when I donβt have all the information?β
βYouβre psychic. I figured youβd find the information that was relevant. Itβs not like I was trying to hide anything. I just found out. He doesnβt even know. And besides, Iβm not asking about being pregnant,β I say, blinking back tears. βIβm trying to save Wade.β
βWell, then things just got a helluva lot more complicated for you,β he snickers under his breath.
I gape at him, waiting for him to explain himself.
After a moment, he shakes his head and meets my gaze. βLook, I need more intelβthe kind I can get when I level up. But I can tell you the Moirai arenβt just searching for a way to take you and Wade down. Theyβre coming for your baby, too.β
My heart races as I push myself to a stand. Itβs not like I didnβt know thisβthe curse has damned us all. But itβs something entirely different to hear that itβs set in motion.
If they plan on taking out our child, the easiest way to do that would be to end his or her life before the baby has a chance of being born.
That means timeβs almost up and Iβm running out of options.
Chapter 14
An Insane Gamble
The room spins, and I walk over to the bed and take a seat.
For some reason I thought Iβd have more time. If nothing else, the duration of the pregnancy, before shit hit the fan. But if theyβre coming for all of us, all bets are off.
βWhen are they coming, Dominic? Has it started already? Is that what this is? Theyβre attacking Wade?β I ask, tears blurring my vision.
Dom shakes his head. βI donβt know. Like I said, the whole situation around him is weirdβthereβs so much interference.β
βThen make it clearer,β I spit at him.
βI canβt,β he says, throwing his hands in the air. βIβm not omnipotent, for fucksake. Iβve been trying to tell you, my abilities have limits.β
I narrow my gaze. βSo, basically, youβre withholding information until you get what you want?β
βWhat?β he sputters, making a face. βNo. Thatβs not what this is.β
βMaybe this was a mistake,β I say, dropping my gaze to the floor. The room still feels like itβs rotating and my stomach is precariously on the verge of pushing the contents back up.
I swallow hard, trying to ignore the pressure.
Dominic opens his mouth to say something, but my phone rings, cutting off whatever he planned on spouting out. I tug my phone from my pocket, and flip it over. Itβs my mom.
For a second, my heart stops beating.
βHey, Mom. Is Wadeββ I sputter, trying not to panic.
βHeβs stable for now and theyβve moved him from the ER to the ICU. Unfortunately, thatβs as much as they can tell me at the moment, sweetie. How are you doing there? Did you make it okay?β she says, trying to keep her voice calm and even.
I shift my gaze to Dominic and nod. βYeah, I made it okay. Iβm with Dom now, but Iβll be back soon.β
βOkay, Iβll call if I hear anything else. Text when youβre on your way back, okay?β she says.
βYeah, okay,β I say.
βLove you, Autumn.β
βLove you, too, Mom,β I say, hanging up the phone.
Again, my gaze flits to Dominic. Things are just as ominous for me now as they were when he said the same thing to his mother.
He takes a deep breath, cramming his hands into his pockets. βLook, Autumn, I know this is the last thing you want to do right now, but itβs really important to me. And if all goes according to plan, me leveling up might be the one thing you need in order to protect yourself from this curse. Obviously, your dadβs research didnβt save him. This isnβt just about Wade anymore.β
I stand up. βDonβt you think I know that?β
βWell, then, what the hell are you waiting for?β he spits back.
I blink back angry tears and I ask myself the same question. Then, it finally dawns on me. It has nothing to do with helping him with this, or even the timing so much.
βIβve been surrounded by death from the moment I came back to Windhaven. I just lost my dad, my boyfriendβs in the ER, and as you said, time is running out for everyone.
